Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

A look back at Ash's travel companions in the anime

There was one episode where they try to cross a bridge but had no bicycles. Then Misty was like, "If you didn't mess up my bike, we could have crossed" or something like that. Haven't watched the anime in a while. If you don't know which episode I'm talking about, this is the one where Ash had to bring some medicine on the other side of the bridge for a Shellder. I don't know why but I've always loved Dawn. I don't really know why, I just do.

I have this one on VHS (wow), they need to cross the bridge but they can't because they don't have bikes, and then Team Rocket gets across because they were formerly part of a biker group and the bikers recognized them and gave them a lift. I think in the end Ash tries running across the bridge but it was really windy and he got blown off into the water and Misty's Staryu saves him and brings him to the Pokemon center. Don't quote me though.

For long-time fans. But a lot of the younger fans watching the show weren't actually alive back when Misty left the team. They didn't watch the first few seasons and haven't experienced the repetitive nature of the anime firsthand. BW might be old to people who grew up on the first season, but when it's the first one you've seen, it's new and exciting.

You see the same marketing strategy all over the place in long-running media. It's just really bad with Pokemon.

Even though I was only a couple years old when the first 5 seasons (the only ones with Misty) ended, I still watch mainly those. And I still do, but i started getting sick of the show mid-Johto because Team Rocket was getting tackier and less funny.

Most of the Johto saga is fairly bad due to the terrible fillers coming in, Ash getting rid of Charizard and Squirtle, the GS ball being abandoned, and its the start of where TR become repetitive and Misty loses her temper. Ash's Johto team is also fairly terrible, being his worst pokemon team of the entire anime.

I wish Johto could have been written more like Kanto, then most of the original series would have been enjoyable. I remember most people gave up on Johto right after the 3rd movie came out, as that's when the fad of pokemon was dying anyway.

Isn't there like some sort of "dinosuar" show that mimcs Pokemon? I swear the chacture has the same voice as Ash-

Pokemon could keep that as "the old" series, and work on something more advanced with Ash. Like Ash actually does become a master and really does not remian so "ditzy" and under-skilled. His early adult hood could bring the level up so much. If the series grows up with the viewers, the series would have more to them then the same old-same old.
It is one thing to go on a quest/advanture, it is another to remain in the same spot you began at to relive the experiance with the same expectations ahead.

Yeah at this point its safe to say that Misty probably won't appear in the anime ever again. Her last cameo was all the way back in 2005 after Ash came home from the Hoenn league. Once Battle Frontier started she never appeared in an episode again, and that's including all of DP and BW so far. Its been 10 years since she was a main, and 6 years since her last cameo, the writers pretty much ignore her now. When you realize its been about 350+ episodes since she last appeared, it says a lot.

Even Tracey has a more recent appearance in the anime than Misty. That's pretty damn sad when you think about it. I guess its safe to say that the writers really saw no reason to ever revive Misty's character, so she's pretty much faded away with each passing generation.

In other news Dawn is getting a return cameo in the BW series, she's probably staying for around 5-6 episodes before she leaves again.

On the part about the bike......... Misty's bike was fixed by nurse joy when they came back to viridian city on the last episode of the Johto series

One thing that annoys me is how Ash's starters never evolve at least not all three. There is always one that evolves and the other two stay in their base form. Exceptions of course being Sceptile and Infernape.

On a positive note, Ash gets a new gang and he actually uses more Pokemon instead of just the first six he caught.

Cilan is awesome, and not just because he has Sonic and Shadow's previous VA. He is profoundly wise yet remains youthful to a fault.
He does a lot more than Brock IMO. He's a good all-around character that brings more personality to the group.

Iris is meh to say the least. Actually mildly annoying is a better term. She is very condescending for a rookie, dontcha think? Especially to her friends who are more experienced than her. Not to mention roughly the same age. Now she even has Dawn acting all high and mighty even though Ash was pretty much Dawn's teacher (for lack of a better word) during his Sinnoh trek. I'm not saying Iris is a bad character. She has decent Pokemon and she does have a caring side, but I think there is room for improvement.

Fox, remember that Iris is a Gym Leader. The strongest one in the region, for that matter. If she wants to be a bit arrogant, I'll give her that.

I think they're trying to make a bigger deal out of Iris and Cilan so they don't wind up neglected like Misty/Brock did.

I think back when Johto was airing everyone was noticing that Misty and Brock were being kept in the background and not doing much. Its probably what led to the writers abandoning the original trio for the entire rest of the series. Even though Brock stayed for Hoenn and DP...he pretty much did absolutely nothing.

If Brock had left at the end of Johto when Misty did it would hardly be any different. My only guess as to why he stayed for so long is they just needed a guy there to explain Ash's battles and provide food for the group. Otherwise they probably would have gotten rid of Brock a lot earlier, he probably should have left when AG ended at the latest.

Although again, there's no doubt that Iris and Cilan will both probably leave when the 5th gen ends. I really don't see them making Cilan the next Brock and staying for the next 3 generations...the show has changed too much to expect characters to last multiple gens now.
