Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Blinking

Obviously, it was imperative that the eyes remain moist, and blinking was the most efficient way for them to not dry out. Evolution kicked in and said, "Hey now, this works, let's let this continue" and the rest is history.

As an aside, what's with all the "you ever think about Body Function X?" threads?

It is used to clean your eyes.

You eyes have a membrane on them to keep out dirt and stuff but you blink to both clean the membrane and clean out anything to get past the membrane.

Think of the membrane as a windsheild on a car and the eyelid/lash as a windsheild wiper

Evolution just decided it was the most effecient way to keep your eyes moist and clean.

AKA what Marril said.

it is designed to protect your eyes with a milimeter thick piece of skin
how can you not see the usefulness?

And of course your eyes will be perfectly protected by that piece of skin they're covered by 1/1000th of the waking time.
