Cheating players?

Anyone who does anything to discourage you from cutting their deck is almost certainly cheating.

Are you always allowed to six pile shuffle your opponent's deck at the beginning of a match, or do only some judges allow it?

It is an allowable shuffle. Just be timely. As long as you and the oppo are at the table in a reasonable time, you will have 2 mins to set up. Unless you have problems doing this, a pile shuffle should take no more than a min. That is placing a card in a pile every second. Plenty of time during a setup.

Every judge should allow this at the start of the game. During a game....no. A quick riffle shuffle or a cut should suffice if the oppo shuffled well after a search.

I've heard that in Magic, you're now /required/ to cut your opponent's deck.

Sounded weird to me at first.

Someone then explained to me that it was a cultural thing. Most of us think nothing of someone cutting our deck, but to many Japanese players it was like being accused of cheating.

By requiring people to cut their opponent's deck they bridged a culture gap.

If you always cut your opponent's deck, it will achieve the same effect as it being mandated: you're not singling anyone out.
