Cheering Up Chimecho

Abby was 16 years old and was ready to be a great Pokemon trainer. She had already been working for several years, but she finally felt like things were starting to come together. Some people would see her and would think that this blonde haired and blue eyed girl was just another dumb kid trying to play Pokemon, but she was just as serious as any of them. She was just about to enter the city. It had been a long and lonely journey. Her purple bandana was soaked with sweat. Abby was ready for a break.

She was finally at Fortree City. She had heard so many stories about it all of her life. This is where her father had grown up. She had been here a couple of times when she was a child, but she didn’t remember it much. It was so exciting to finally be back after all of this time. There were houses and shops up in the trees and they were all connected by rope bridges. It was just like all of the stories; it was just as she had imagined it.

While looking around, Abby noticed a boy her own age going into the PokeCenter. Abby went over to him.

“Hi. I’m Abby”, she said. The boy looked up, “My name is Michael. It’s nice to meet you”. Abby smiled. “I haven’t seen you around here before, and I know almost everyone from Fortree. What brings you to town?” Michael asked. “Well, I’m from LittleRoot,” said Abby, “but my grandmother still lives here. Besides, I’m here to Battle the Gym Leader.” Michael looked interested “Wow, battling Winona is tough. Good Luck.” Abby paused, “Well, I’m not exactly ready to battle the Gym Leader but I figure I’ll travel around, train up my Pokemon and then I’ll be ready. I have 3 weeks here.”

“Well, Abby, speaking of training up Pokemon, I’m on my way to LavaRidge, so it was nice to meet you”. He started to leave the PokeCenter. “Wait” said Abby, “I’ll go with you. My friend once traveled there. She told me about all the shortcuts and the Pokemon that live in the area. I could be a great help to you and I can still get back in time to battle Winona.”

Michael thought about it. “That’s sounds like a great idea. We’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

Abby was very excited. Finally, she’d get to travel with someone instead of by herself like she always had.

Abby left the PokeCenter and headed towards her Grandma’s house. It would be great to stay in a real home, not just a campsite. But Grandma wouldn’t be there. Abby had gotten a letter three weeks earlier from her grandmother. She carried it with her in case anyone asked her why she was there. She took it out to read one more time, to make sure she had the right address.

My Darling Abby,

I miss you so much. How have you and your sister been doing? I have heard from your father that you are becoming quite a Pokemon trainer. He says that you are just about ready to battle our Gym Leader. I wish I could see that! However, I will be going to SlatePort for three weeks, leaving on the 21st of next month. If you wanted to, you could stay at my house while preparing for your battle. It has food and all the things a teenager could want. TV, radio, everything. Oh, we don’t have running water. I guess we are behind the times. Oh well. It’s still home sweet home to me.

I have already cleared this with your parents. In fact, it was their idea. Your dad has the extra key. Be sure to get it from him before you go or you’ll be sleeping outside. That wouldn’t be very fun.

I love you so much. Please keep in touch.

Love,

Grandma

Abby put the letter away and headed to 42 Wooden Way. She climbed two ladders and crossed three bridges. Soon, she came to a small home. It wasn’t the smallest home in Fortree but it was still small. Plenty of room for one girl. It could use a layer of paint but it did look like Home Sweet Home, The leaves on the roof were lit up by the sunset. What a beautiful view. The porch had two chairs and a table. Abby knew that she’d have to visit sometime when Grandma was home. Grandma had always come to LittleRoot to visit.

Abby walked inside and found the guest room. It had a small bed, chair and a dresser. And, like Grandma had promised, a TV and radio. Abby felt right at home. The guest room was exactly like her bedroom at home. Abby folded her clothes and put them in the dresser. She put her backpack on the chair. She headed to the kitchen.

She got everything together and made hot tea to drink and some steamed rice for dinner. The berries she had left were the only dessert item she could find. But it was better food then she had had for awhile. Campsite food isn’t know for being that good. This was wonderful.

After dinner, Abby took of her bandana and shoes. She set them on the dresser, and she climbed into bed. She couldn’t help thinking about her family and how she missed them. Her mom, dad and her little sister, Sue. It was great to be on an adventure, but she did miss them. Before she knew it, Abby was asleep.

Abby had never slept so well. She woke up the next morning. She got ready quickly. She knew today would be exciting. Before leaving, she wrote a note for her Grandmother. She would drop it in the mail before she left town.

Hi Grams,

Thank-You for letting me stay in your home. I love it. The journey here was tiring, but I’m not stopping. I met Michael Pickett in town and he’s letting me go to LavaRidge with him. I may not travel the whole way because I need to get back here for my Gym battle, but it’ll be a great way to prepare.

I’m leaving my Mr. Mime here to help you with house work. He’s really great at it and the only payment he’ll need is your chocolate chip cookies. You’ll work great together.

Miss You!

Love,
Abby

Abby headed out to the center of town and met up with Michael. They started out heading towards LavaRidge. It was mostly all grassy areas between the two cities.

They had been walking quite a while. It was hot and Abby was drinking her last can of soda pop. Michael was studying the map. “It’s not much farther to the next PokeMart,” he said. The journey was going faster then Abby thought it would.

Suddenly, they were attacked by a wild Zangoose! It looked very strong and Abby was scared. It would be a tough battle, but she felt better knowing that Michael was there too. Abby sent out her Chimecho and her Wynaut. Michael sent out Spoink. Abby told Chimecho to use double-edge and told Wynaust to use splash. Michael yelled for Spoink to use psybeam. Zangoose used all of his strength and used scratch. Wynaut fell to the ground but was able to get right back up. It was a great battle. Finally, Zangoose was weak. Michael threw a PokeBall. Zangoose tried to dodge but the PokeBall got him. The PokeBall wiggled. Michael thought for sure that it was going to work, but Zangoose broke free. Chimecho, Wynaut and Spoink kept battling with the Zangoose until it fainted.

“Oh man,” said Michael “I could’ve caught my first Zangoose. But that was some battle”

All of a sudden, Wynaut and Spoink started to glow. It looked beautiful. When the two Pokemon stopped glowing, Wynaut was a Wubbuffet and Spoink was a Grumpig! Wubbuffet stood straight up and saluted Abby. Abby returned the salute as she laughed. Grumpig showed off his muscles to Michael. He felt like one tough Pokemon. What a great way to end a battle.

Chimecho started to crying. She didn’t appear to be hurt. “Chimecho, why are you crying?” asked Abby, “Michael, why is she crying?”. Michael had no idea. Wubbuffet came over to salute Chimecho, but it did no good. Grumpig came over and tried to make Chimecho happy, but that didn’t work either. Wubbuffet and Grumpig returned to their PokeBalls. Chimecho wanted to walk but it was more like sulking.

The followed the path to a nearby campsite. Chimecho walked slowly behind Abby and Michael and cried the whole way. She eventually stopped crying but she still wasn’t happy. She got back into her PokeBall for the rest of the walk.

When they got to the campsite, Abby and Michael did everything they could to make Chimecho happy. She had always been happy before. Abby didn’t know why Chimecho was so sad. They gave Chimecho PokeBlocks and food and even gave her rare candy. Nothing worked.

Michael got an idea. “I know!,” he said “Let Chimecho win a battle by herself! Maybe she felt like she didn’t help enough against the Zangoose.” Abby thought that was a great idea. They would find a battle for Chimecho in the morning. Abby and Michael ate dinner and let the Pokemon come out to play. As Abby headed to bed she thought that maybe this trip was a bad idea and maybe she should’ve stayed in Fortree City.

The next morning, they all ate breakfast and headed out to find a battle for Chimecho. There were no wild Pokemon near camp so they had to travel awhile. The whole time, Abby hoped that this plan would work. If Chimecho stayed sad, she would be no help in the battle at the Fortree Gym. Abby knew that she needed her whole team to be ready to battle. Without Chimecho she might as well just stay at Grandma’s or, even worse, go home to LittleRoot.

The continued to walk when it finally happened. They were attacked by a wild Dratini!

“GO CHIMECHO!” yelled Abby and Michael together.

Chimecho still looked down but seemed ready to battle. She used double-edge as Abby told her to. Dratini fell to the ground but was able to get up again. Dratini used swift, but it missed! Chimecho used head but. Dratini fell to the ground and fainted.
Abby and Michael were so excited. “Way to go Chimecho! That was great!” they said. Certainly, this would fix everything! But Chimecho started crying again. Abby and Michael were out of ideas. “Why is she still crying?” asked Abby “Beats me” Michael replied “I don’t know what else we can do”

Just then, a Meowth jumped out towards them. Michael was ready to send out his Pokemon for battle. “Whoa! Don’t attack me” said the Meowth “I just wanted to see what all the crying was about…Oh, it’s your Chimecho” Abby put her head down, she felt horrible “We can’t make her stop. She must’ve gotten hurt or something.” Meowth laughed a little “Nope, she’s fine, I mean she’s not hurt. I’ve seen this a million times before” Abby and Michael were stunned. How is it possible that this Meowth could know what was wrong with Chimecho? But they were willing to listen to any idea.

Meowth sat down and started to explain. “She’s sad because she won’t evolve” Abby moved closer to listen. “You trainers are all the same,” Meowth continued “You run around and make your Pokemon stronger but you don’t always pay attention. I bet you that your Chimecho here has been battling hard for you and maybe even saw a teammate evolve recently. Am I right?”

“Actually, it was two teammates” said Michael

“Even worse” replied Meowth “And you couldn’t figure that out? Typical teenagers. Me, I don’t want to evolve so I carry an everstone, but for a Pokemon that wants to evolve, it’s hard when then can’t.”

Abby felt bad that she hadn’t seen the answer. It seemed so obvious now. “Oh Chimecho. Even though you don’t evolve, you’re absolutely perfect. There are a bunch of Pokemon that don’t evolve and they’re wonderful Pokemon, even some of the strongest ones I’ve seen!” Chimecho stopped crying and started singing and dancing. The other Pokemon came out to play. Wubbuffet saluted Chimecho and Chimecho returned the salute proudly.

Abby decided to return to Fortree City to battle Gym Leader, Winona. If it weren’t for Chimecho, Abby couldn’t have earned her flying badge.

Abby knew that she and her great team of Pokemon could accomplish anything. It didn’t matter about names or evolutions, with hard work, determination and teamwork they could face any challenge that came their way. Chimecho was going to help make Abby a great Pokemon trainer.

Now she ran to catch up with Michael. Maybe they could become great trainers together.
