When you're connected to a network, you can see people's IPs next to their names. If they are hosting a game, go into your options and type their IP into the preferred IP box, then start a type 3 game (or whichever it is that has you joining rather than hosting).
IP addresses take the form ###.##.##.###, or something like that, just so you know.
