Consequences of Poor Judging

Prof Magma: You didn't specify HJ of an age group.
In fact, there is only one Head Judge of any event. The "HJ" of the different age groups might be better called "Lead Judges".
There may be assigned "Head Judges" of the different age groups, but there is only one Head Judge and those judges still report up to him.
In fact, there has been little change of who the Lead Judges are, either, over the past few years.

I don't think it is productive to "almost" talk about problems with "hypothetical" people that can only be a handful of possible people. Without laying out specifics, where is it going to go other than to cast a shadow on them?

The general topic ChaosJim started may have some value as long as it is kept at that level. The "narrowing" of the topic to what could only be referring to 3 or 4 people (with your new parameters) holds significantly less value.
I suggest we get back to the completely general topic and move away from "hypotheticals" that are so narrowly focused.

IDK if this would have been called "bad judging" but during nats my bro. lost a match due to time because he had to wait for 10+ min. for various ruleings on things( he was playing a real brat). He got a time extension but was only given 5min. When he lost he only need 1 more turn to win, but his opponent cleaned up his cards the second the timer beeped. The judge didn't do anything about it. Should somthing have been done about this?

Yes. At the time that the extension was given, your brother should have said "but we waited for 10 minutes. Can we have a 10 minute extension?"

IN the Future, you might ask (when it is obvious a ruling will take osme time as this one did) what the time left is in the Match and then when the final ruling is made, how much time is left. You cna take notes and writing things like this down would not be discouraged as it can assist in helping wiht time extensions if needed on lengthy rulings. Just be sure if you do this, you might actually ask the judge to write it or intial it then again when completed, this deminishes the situaiton of cheating.

If the opponent "scopped" before a winner was dictated to the judge and the judge acknowledges the winner, that is a completely different scenario.

As for the Topic, Judges are people. We do the best we can to provide the Safest, Most Fair, and Funnest Events we can. If there is an obvious issue, please report them to the Website in Post 2. Rulings are based not only by the written word, but also by the scenario involving the Realtive Game. Rulings in the compendium are dictated for referencing as it will not always be hte exact scenario listed. We do our best to take the wirtten word and apply to a situaiton that may or may not be close or even resemble the Comp. Most of the Staff I have worked with and Played under have been, if anyhitng, Fair and unbiased.

I have a small POD of people I rely on after events to inform me of things they may have heard or seen that we couldn't get to or Players worked out themselves. Constructive Criticism is how we develop into better Judges and if you feel you know it all, I assure you, you don't.

SOTG is most Important!! We all need ot identify that as Players and Staff. Blatant disregard of a Players concern of proper rulings that can easily be found is unfortunate and should be reported, but as Vince said, some things are clear as mud at times and thus a HJ makes a decision and must stand with it.

Happy New Year!

Do you think this line of questioning is helping anything? Does this instill confidence in judges? Does it make players want to branch out, and reach out to their friends to get them to come along to premier events? Does this make you look better in others eyes? How about the specific judge you seem to be targeting? Were my words right, or not? Witch hunt or not, this helps NO ONE.

I walked away from this thread having a lot more faith in the system. I think some people might have felt like my question might have been charged (and let's be real, it was obviously caused by something) but overall there should be confidence in judges, and the fact that so many I know (and even some in this thread) are comfortable admitting they make mistakes, and like Pokepop said, good judges will take an appeal of their own ruling is really on the mark. It's also cool to get that statement from someone with authority like him, that way perhaps new HJs don't have to feel self conscious about doing that. Despite any issues I've ever had with this game, if its a season where I'm playing I'm trying to get my friends to come to premier events. Looking better isn't really the point for us or judges, its making sure events are fun fair and safe for everyone as someone else expressed (unrelated to your question). I'll note that I haven't been to Nats other than last year, and haven't been to any Worlds, so this clearly isn't targeting one of those HJs or Lead Judges.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
