Iron Chef Age of Kabuto – Round 2 – Dark Crobat RR
- Criminal

Deck Design

Dark Crobat was an interesting card to make a deck for, since its “combos” have already been played with and wouldn’t give me any originality points. So, given that I wanted a solid deck which would grant me solid originality points, I had to stay away from Weezing (an amazing card in combination with Dark Crobat, but its been done more times than crack.) Ariados also came to mind, but in reality, the deck would end up revolving more around Ariados than Dark Crobat, so that was also not an option. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I wanted to take advantage of Crobat’s first attack, Dark Drain, rather than his insane pokemon power. Dark Drain, while amazing, can also be controlled by your opponent if he manages his bench well enough, so Dark Crobat needed something to keep the opponent from being able to ko crobat at will while either massacring your opponents entire board or tickling your opponents active pokemon to death. This is where the Azumarill comes in, it works perfectly with dark crobat. Either, A) you paralyze the opponent turn after turn and dark drain your opponent to death, or B) you paralyze your opponent turn after turn and play the sniping game with crobat/golbat. The strategy was amazing, it worked perfectly and was actually looking like it might become a decent tier deck by the time I finished it. However, something was lacking, the deck just couldn’t deal enough straight damage to win consistently vs heavy HP pokemon decks. I rummaged through cards and found Crobat EX, a perfect addition to the deck! Why hadn’t I thought of it earlier?! The problem? It’s an EX Pokemon.

Now I have a decision to make, play heavy desert ruins, play Crobat EX, or play both. Crobat EX really is the nuts in this deck, it’s the perfect addition to qualify Dark Crobat / Azumarill as a tier deck. However, Desert Ruins pulls off a huge role in your matchups vs ZRE and ZapTurnDos. Both use Zapdos to attack, and since your entire deck is weak to lightning, you need something other than poison + paralysis to win these matchups. So my decision? I chose to play both, I know it’s a weird decision, but if you put enough thought into it, and actually play the deck, you’ll know that it’s the right one. Unfortunately, choosing to play both really gives me some tough decisions throughout the game. Of course, if they play heavy battle frontier than I’ll have to counter with my Desert Ruins, but if they play EX’s I don’t necessarily need Desert Ruins right away, if Crobat EX will be a bigger factor than Desert Ruins, and they don’t have a battle frontier in play, I’ll let crobat do his thing before laying down the ruins, if I think they have a counter gym or will get a countergym before I play my crobat ex, I’ll play the ruins and play accordingly. Desert Ruins and Crobat EX are the right choice, given the Metagame. It could change eventually, but as of right now I wouldn’t play the deck any other way.

PART TWO

Strategy

The strategy’s simple, you fall behind early setting up, because your Pokemon just don’t attack, and that’s ok. Then you get an Azumarill lock on. You do this by retreating Dark Crobat, activating Marill, evolving it to Azumarill, then playing Mr. Briney’s Compassion (or VS seeker fishing for Briney) and activating the Dark Crobat, then Dark Draining, or simply sniping away at whatever threat they have, while the active slowly dies of poison. Also, You completely control the lifespan of your opponents active pokemon, your pokemon are THAT versatile! You can deal 10 damage to it via dark drain, 20 if you have darkness energy attached, its taking 10 damage a turn through poison, and you can deal 30/40 to it through skill dive / darkness energy. It’s important to always have your opponent’s pokemon die at the end of his turn, and it’s easily achievable either way.

Yes, I know the draw engine looks weird, it contains no straight draw! Here’s why: Steven’s Advice relies on your opponent having a big bench and your Dark Drain attack relies on your opponent having a big bench; so basically, your opponent will not have a big bench! Even if Copycat only gets you 4-7 cards, it’ll probably still be a lot better than Steven’s Advice would be.

POW! Hand extension was originally in this deck, but it just didn’t do enough, you will always have control of the board, so there’s really no use in the card, it’s nice in theory, but it does little in game. Switch and Warp Point are also nice theoretical cards, but warp energy does its effect and more! The ancient tomb is there for extreme situations involving Crobat ex and for random lightning decks, it takes some clever use of it to minimize your opponents chances of countering it (usually involves an admin right after playing it)

The fact of the matter is that you WOULD want that 4th Great Ball, or that 7th draw card, but it really can’t be fit. If the deck sets up it should beat just about anything out. Setting up seems difficult but Azumarill helps stall early on, and once you have pidgeot rolling you’ll be good to go.

Thanks and Good Luck to my opponent.

strategy

the strategy is to damage your opp's pokemon asap, heres how.Using dark crobat's black beam, the pokemon is poisoned, then switch to ariados (UF) for reactive poison to do some quick damage.Strength charm are to boost the attack for ariados to do 1 turn kill for a pokemon.Curse powder is for combining the Poisoned to do massive damage for the attacker.Ariados spider trap not only can stall for a while,i can also switch back to dark crobat's skill dive and dark drain to hit the bench be4 the defending pokemon woke up...

Note: Since I forgot to post the poll, put the winner's name at the bottom of your post.

Criminal:

Deck (6/10): Solid list here, but there are a few things that I don't like. Although Bat+Azu is a very good strategy, you really have a small azu line, when the focus of your deck is to poison+paralyze. You have a good amount of draw and search; I like that! However, it would have been nice to see just a little straight draw. Despite 'bat's attack, your opponent will still have a reasonable-enough bench to make at least 2 steven useful (3 or more). The Crobex/Desert ruins idea is a little "batty" (hrhrhr), but I'm convinced that it does work...maybe you could have switched it to two ruins/two tomb, because tomb is good in the matchups you mention, as well. Good job, overall!

Creativity (3/5): Pretty darn creative here, IMO, and with so few heal energy/switching cards being played right now, I see this combo being very lethal :D

Card Use (4/5): Very legitimate job here, as well. I feel that you adequately abused Dark Crobat, so congratulations go to you! Bat can potentially become a heal wall if your opponent's attacks aren't strong enough, plus all of the status, and PLUS the sniping potential during paralysis. I am quite impressed =)

OVERALL: 13/20

Jesschow12:

Deck (5/10): Here's where I really will put the hurt. It seems very inconsistent. Why play so few plusle, when you could just play great ball instead, or enough plusle+swoops to make it consistent? Why so many Jirachis? I don't like that. Your one stone is very random, and your countergyms are not enough to bypass battle frontier. All of those strength charms and rocket missions??? I wasn't too fond of this, sorry =(

Creativity (3/5): Kind of a simple concept for a unique card like Dark Crobat, but I'll certainly buy it. I feel that you made a unique deck

Card Use (3/5): There sure is a fair share of Dark Crobat abuse here, I give you that. Most of your cards in this entire deck focus in one way or another on Dark Crobat combinations, so congrats on a good job :D

I won't do a "scientific" comment like Patriarch, just explain in plain words why I vote like I do.

I like the "straighforwardness" of Jess' deck. Good draw, easy to use attacks, always the right energy (when you get it...), and extra damage thru trainer cards... I think it's crazy to not choose Desert Ruins in a non-ex deck, but at least there is a beneficial stadium in there...

Criminals deck is wierder, yet more original, more daring. The deck probably has more possibilities and can surprise and outsmart an opponent... like where did that paralysis come from? But it has only 7 basics (+ 3 balls), that's a small number...

I had a hard time deciding between the solid (jesschow) and the creative (criminal)... but to make it exciting my vote goes like this...

Criminal
Deck: 6/10
Creativity: 3/5
Card use: 3/5

Total 12/20

Jesschow

Deck: 7/10
Creativity: 3/5
Card use: 3/5

Total 13/20

I vote for Jesschow!

Plain and simple, i would play Jess's deck in a tourney because it seems more reliable, but criminals has more creative, originality, and focuses on crobat to a higher degree so...

Criminal
Deck: 6/10
Creativity: 4/5
Card use: 4/5

Total 14/20

Jesschow

Deck: 5/10
Creativity: 3/5
Card use: 3/5

Total 11/20

Jesschows deck was to bland, to done; his trainers are lackluster. Stone's Project??? None of your guys take more than 2 energy to attack. Rockets Hideout is one of the worst choices for a gym, and there are about 4 other tools i'd choose over curse powder.

Criminal. I think the lock is not strong enough to hang in there until a win condition.
Jesschow. I don't think the Ariados combo does enough damage.

ATM Rock - one in Crim's deck, or 3 in Jesschow's might have tipped the balance (& not just for Dark Drain, but for those half-KO'd threats) one way or another.

edit - adding point system:

Criminal:
Deck - 6/10
Creativity - 2/5
Card use - 4/5

Jesschow -
Deck - 7/10
Creativity - 3/5
Card use - 3/5

I'll go with the board control & speed of Jesschow's.

Criminal VS Jesschow (2-2 Tie! Check for winner on post #6!)

So, 2-2 tie??? No way! However, using our method to break ties, we will average out the scores. Whoever's average is the higher one will win!

14 (Absol)
13 (Patriarch)
12 ('Snore)
12 (Daddiursa)

51/4= 12.75

JESSCHOW'S SCORES:

oh oh oh how close. i did pretty bad this round, no worries though, the bye during the next round will help me straighten my deck building skills back up. GJ Jesschow, better luck next year.

wow our score almost the same XD anyway i prefer Criminals deck,a instant paralyze ability. Thanks to the judge for the fair voting, this round sure was challenging

GL criminial for next round XD

Criminal's deck
9/10 Deck-His deck is more special condition. Jesschow's deck is they can retreat during their turn if heads. Criminal's deck is he does Special Condition on his turn so it's more damage accuracy.

4/5 Creativity-Criminal's deck is Poekmon whom do special condition on that players turn.
2/5 Card Use-My opinion is Criminal's deck should be more around Crobat Ex. 1 is not enough.
Result:15/20

Jesschow's deck
6/10 Deck-It's pretty strong, but why Ariados? It really doesn't help unless you're playing Crobat Ex like Criminal is.
2/5 Creativity-You really do not nedd ariados unless you have Crobat Ex
4/5 Card Use-Jesschow's deck is alot faster but not as strong as Criminal's deck.
12/20

My vote goes to Criminal.

Psyco Out!
