Mods if this is not allowed, feel free to lock/delete.

Well, my Anime Club at my High School is creating its own forum board, but the problem is: is that we have no idea what service (is that the right word?) to use.

We were using invision at first, but were thinking of walking away from that. Proboards was another idea, but we really do not know. It need to be free BTW.

Any suggestions, or should we stick with invision

BTW: put reasons so this is not a poll.

Does vBulletin® cost any money? If it doesn't, I go with that since it works so well on the gym. It is easy to get used to, and the the color scheme that we have is not distracting like a lot of forums.

I would suspect whatever provider you go with, colours are not fixed, this could be just as distracting in other words. The charge would probably be really low for low hits, so why not just pay to get rid of the ads?

I just got some time to check, and unfortunately vBulletin® cost $160 for one year of updates plus infinite use of the software. Then you have to pay $30 for the second year if you still want to receive updates. I guess that idea is shot.

vB does cost money. You are looking at 160 + 30/year for updates, or 85/year.

It is not the most expensive out there, but it there are cheaper alternatives.

ok well we need a free one, so it looks like vB is off the idea chart.

    Any others?

if youve got a hosting location with PHP and a database, then a good alternative to vB is phpBB, which is free and open source

PHP is one of several web programming languages. the major ones you'll be dealing with are PHP, Perl, and ASP. unless you go with someone else's forum hosting service (like ezboard) if whatever hosting provider you go with doesnt support any of those you wont be able to run any forum software. most hosts will support PHP, ASP is only avaiilable on a windows server (most hosts run linux and ASP isnt generally supported on linux)

a database is how the information is stored, the usernames, the posts, etc etc. most web hosts use MySQL, but there are others. if you get a host that doesnt have any database support it may be harder, but there are some forum software that use flat files and dont need databases.

this is all assuming you will set it up yourself, of course. there are companies out there that provide forum hosting, but they usually arent very customizable as far as the look.
