For reference:
Put damage counters on the Defending Pokémon until it is 50 HP away from being Knocked Out. If you do, your opponent switches the Defending Pokémon with 1 of his or her Benched Pokémon.
If I am able to place damage counters on the Defending Pokemon, but there's no Benched Pokemon to switch with, how much of the attack can be performed? Would I be able to place damage counters, or would the entire attack fail?
