I’m not really sure why I love Grass Pokemon sooooo much (it MIGHT have sumthing to do with the Rainbow Badge), but I do. I started this season by playing Torterra, because I thought it became playable when the Celebi from Mysterious Treasures came out. I won a City and a Battleroad with him earlier this year, and then Secret Wonders came out and completely changed the format. Fire became extremely popular and I had to give up on Grass..for the time being.

Great Encounters came out and gave us 2 amazing Grass Pokemon: Beedrill and Sceptile. However, during States, Magmortar seemed to be even more popular, especially in my area.

Regionals brought about Fire’s demise as a popular type because it was apparent that Gardevoir was CLEARLY the victor over Magmortar variants. This paved the way for Grass to become more playable, and I was able to win the St. Louis Regionals with Beedrill, going 11-0.

I was planning on sticking with Beedrill for Nationals, but the surprise factor would be gone and I believed people would be adding more counterstadiums to their decks in order to get rid of the Crystal Beach. Crystal Beach really helped make Beedrill playable, and without it sticking, Beedrill is extremely crippled. I also did not think Beedrill would be able to beat Empoleon variants.

So Majectic Dawn was released and hindered Fire type decks even more so with the release of Empoleon, Glaceon/Vaporeon, and Unown P/Gyarados to a slight degree. The set also released the new and fierce Torterra, along with the consistency adding Call Energy. I saw a few Torterra lists, some used Sceptile and others used Leafeon, but none of the lists seemed very good. However, I wanted to try my own list and I built a version several weeks ago. I pretty much decided Sceptile was much better than Leafeon for several reasons. The first reason is that Sceptile reduces Torterras BIG retreat cost, I can get Sceptile out in one turn, AND it would allow me to play fewer energy cards.

When I first started testing Torterra, I realized the potential the deck possessed. The LV X gave the deck amazing comeback ability, the DP one gave a huge advantage over spread decks, the use of Crystal Beach (although it wasn’t as reliant on the stadium as much as Beedrill was), their HUGE HP and AMAZING Energy/Damage output was incredible AND there was little to no fire being played. However, its consistency and set up was the biggest problem. I tried several starters..but none of them seemed very good. Call Energy was definitely the best choice for early game. I had to cut down on a lot of techs because it still was not consistent enough. So after weeks of testing here is the final list (lol yes I’m giving out my list)…

    Pokemon: 20
    4x Turtwig
    2x Grotle MD
    2x Torterra DP
    1x Torterra MD
    1x Torterra LV X
    2x Treecko
    1x Grovyle
    2x Sceptile
    2x Baltoy
    2x Claydol
    1x Chatot

    Energy: 13
    9x Grass Energy
    4x Call Energy

    Trainers: 27
    3x Roseanne’s Research
    3x Steven’s Advice
    3x Celio’s Network
    4x Bebe’s Search
    4x Super Scoop Up
    4x Rare Candy
    2x Crystal Beach
    2x Night Maintenance
    2x Warp Point

The deck’s major weakness, other than Fire, was Cessation Crystal in GG/Empoleon, but few people used the tool so I thought that the SSU/Crystal Beach were far more important than Windstorms. After testing, I was pretty confident with the Empoleon and GG matchup, and relatively confident with the BanBliss matchup.

So NOW on with the report =)

I drove up to Columbus with my friends Jake, Bela and Mason late Wednesday evening and arrived at like 9 AM Thursday morning. I playtested a bit on Thursday for Nationals and the Professor Cup.

On Friday I played in the professor cup and went 5-3, I used Raichu/Flaffy/Dodrio and lost to 3 fighting decks. I also was not playing very well, I was making a ton of misplays, so afterwards I was very discouraged about how I would play the following day. I tested a bit more Friday evening and made a few changes to my Torterra list and went to bed. I woke up feeling really sick, I had gotten sick from one of my friends and I had no idea how I would be able to play especially considering I misplayed a lot yesterday. So I entered the tournament being very disenchanted. However, the 2 flights and top 64 was extremely encouraging and brought up my hopes =) BTW I was in the Blue Flight, which IMO was just as, if not more so, difficult than the Yellow. So now on with the games. So I was sick then and I’m still sick so most of this report will be very basic and lacking of indepth info.

    Round 1: Sceptile/Leafeon
I opened with a Treecko, 5 Grass, and a Steven’s..which really upset me, but he had 5 Pokemon in play and I drew into 5 pretty good cards. I saw that my LV X was prized so I wasn’t happy about that. He got an early lead but he didn’t run Claydol so he ran outta steam about midgame and I was able to launch a comeback and get ahead on prizes when time was called even without my LV X =)

Winning round 1 increases my confidence soooo much! I was very happy about this win, especially against another Grass deck.

    1-0

    Round 2: Eeveelutions
I think I had a pretty good opening…but I prized my MD Torterra, the LV X and a Claydol..soooo I had no idea how I was going to win this. Anyway Crystal Beach really helped this matchup and I eventually drew my LV X from the prizes. I’m pretty sure SSU really helped me in this game, but I don’t remember the details about that. So, time was called on my turn and we were 3-3 in prizes. So I leveled up and grabbed a prize for the win.

    2-0

    Round 3: Blissey/Darkrai/Weaville
He had an extremely poor opening, I only saw 2 Darkrai the entire game. I got out my MD Torterra fast and went through him in about 8 minutes.

    3-0

So I’m playing down and I already have really poor resistance, so I know I can’t go 6-3 and make it in, which is very discouraging..but w/e

    Round 4: Leafeon/Magmortar
Ooooh fire…I was NOT happy to see him drop a Magmar. However, Crystal Beach really hurt him and the LV X was able to use Forest Murmers several times to KO threats and grab multiple prizes at once to get ahead when time was called.

    4-0

    Round 5: GG
Soooo I’m playing Mikey and I had played against him the day before, so I know hes running Cess Crystal. I go into this game basically knowing I’m going to lose, and not really caring cause I LOOOVE Mikey. So I get a slow opening, he gets out a Gallade with a Cess Crystal, and I scoop about 15-20 or so minutes into it I believe. It was a good loss =)

    4-1

Alright, the pressure has begun, I can only have one more loss…

    Round 6: Bronzong/Claydol/Ray ex
I feel really sorry for this guy. He was expecting to play mainly just GG/Empoleon and here he is playing Torterra, poor guy, he was extremely nice too =) Anyway I got out both Leaf Storm Torterras and all he could do was knock out my Claydol because his damage Spread did absolutely noting to my Grass type pokemon. I won very easily.

    5-1

    Round 7: GG
April is extremely nice, probably one of the nicest players I have ever met via a game. Games are sooo much better when the opponent is friendly. Anyway she had no counterstadiums so Crystal Beach really stopped her from doing much. My low 2 energy attacks outdid her 3 energy attacks and she just couldn’t keep up with Leaf Storm/Frenzy Plant/Vigorous Dash. So I win =)

    6-1

    Round 8: Empoleon
I love Alex, and we seem to play quite often in tournaments. I knew he played Empoleon so I was pretty confident about this game. HOWEVER, on turn 2 he dropped down his Latias/Latios and basically screwed over poor Sceptile. Anyway, it took a LOOOONG time, but I eventually got enuff energy to start using Leaf Storm, so that helped get me back in the game. It was getting close to time and neither of us had taken a prize because he kept retrating his damaged Empoleons and spreading his damage across my board. On my 2nd to last turn I scooped up my Claydol with 60 damage and Leaf Stormed getting rid of any chance of him grabbing a prize on his turn. Time was indeed called on his turn and he couldn’t grab a prize, so he just spread sum more damage. So I Leveled Up and hit something on the bench for 30 to grab the first prize and to win the game.

7-1 YES I’m guaranteed top cut!

    Round 9: Gallade/Absol
So OHKOS and Cess? Yuck. I don’t really care that I’m probably going to lose this matchup cause I’m guaranteed top cut but I try to win anyway. He opens with Absol and discards sum stuff but I get my Claydol out, lay down a beach(he happens to run no counter stadiums soooo that Is amazing), and get 4 energy on my Torterra. He basically doesn’t draw into many of his Cess Crystals/Castaways so I’m able to overcome his Gallades/Absols with my huge Torterras.

    8-1 YAY So I make top 64!

I am extremely tired at this point and have no desire to play Top 64…but I have no choice in the matter obviously..

    Top 64: Eeveelutions
Game 1: So the first game we both get pretty slooow openings, his a bit worse, but eventually get my Torterras out and I think the LV X comes in play with Forest Murmers quite a bit. Anyway he realizes that all his Eevees are in the discard pile and scoops Game 1 with about 35 minutes left.
Game 2: Again I get a slow opening and he is beginning to play lightning fast while I maintain my normal play speed, which btw is very fast for most Pokemon players, especially in Game 2 of a top cut. However we get a time extension because the judge claims that I am “slow playing” which I most certainly am NOT doing, my opponent is just playing extremely fast. So anyway I do play my normal speed but I do legally stall with Forest Murmers because I get a very, very poor opening and his is pretty good. Forest Murmers and Big HP is one of the reasons I love Torterra because if you do need to win on time, those 2 things are a huuuuge legal help.

    9-1

Yes sleeeep =D However, only 3 hours of it =(

    Top 32: Empoleon/Ampharos
Game 1: This was probably my luckiest game at Nationals. We both got good openings but I got ¾ Scoop up heads and drew my Rare Candies right when I needed them. I was able to RC to my MD Torterra on the last turn and do 100 for the last Prize. This game took up 40 minutes, so my opponent was very discouraged about winning game 2. I dunno if he was just paranoid about losing or what, but he complained to the judge (after losing game 1) that I had no dice in hopes that I get some sort of punishment that would enable him to get the win (anyway I’m assuming that was his logic, I see no other reason for him to complain about something sooo stupid when we were fine using his dice the first 40 minutes of the round) So I get either a Caution or a Warning and get told to get dice for the next round.
Game 2: He gets an amazing start, while mine is so-so. He obviously is playing very very fast, and I’m actually playing very fast too because I don’t want him to have another reason to complain about me, my dice or my playing. I get 3 tails on my SSU’s but I land the last one to take 150 off my LV X. Anyway with my huge HP, Forest Murmers legal stall, and that last SSU he isn’t able to draw the 6 prizes in 20 minutes EVEN with our fast playing.

    10-1

I go out and get sum dice because of this skeeeeeet rule and my opponent’s skeeeeeet complaining.

    Top 16: Sausage
Soooo I get paired against Jimmy and I’m not really sure how I feel about this. I’m relatively confident about this matchup because of my testing, but obviously Jimmy is an amazing player so I’m unsure about the outcome. I know not to even go for the Sceptile and just get out Grotles, use planting several times, and take sum names with the MD Torterra
Game 1: So I get a pretty good start for this matchup and planting turn 2 to get sum extra energy into play. He doesn’t draw into many of his Cess Crystals and he scoops after 10 minutes or so.
Game 2: Basically the same thing happens. I get out my MD Torterra and he doesn’t draw into much and he scoops again. Sorry Jimmy about the loss and the pairings mistake =( =( =( Hopefully I will see you at Worlds and we can get a legit. game sumtime.

    11-1 I’m guaranteed Scholarship money!!!

    Top 8: GG
I think I have both of these games confused…but I remember him getting a poor opening one game and him wagering me turn 2-3 with his Chatot active. I win the Wager but decide to only draw 3(I have my Claydol out), so he then mimics for 3, draws a bad 3 cards, and I take 3 prizes over the next 3 turns while he struggles to get out evolutions. Onece he does he get his evolutions out, he grabs a few prizes but isn’t able to come back from the huge lead I made early game. This game lasts about a half hour I believe. The other game I think my Crystal Beach stuck for a long time and he wasn’t able to knock it out and one turn he forgot it was in play and tried to attack me with a Gardevoir with a Psychic and Castform attached, he obviously wasn’t able to, which gave me a HUGE advantage and I proceeded to win this game pretty easily.

    12-1 AHHH I get a TRIP!!!

    Top 4: GG
So this one is against Gino.
Game 1: I didn’t get that great of an opening and I am forced to start attacking with a Sceptile early in order to even stand a chance. I finally get set up after a few turns and start attacking with my Torterra. He thought that I could only use Wild Growth for 1 Grass Energy, sooo he is surprised when I OHKO his Cresselia LV X with Frenzy Plant. So after this we trade prizes for the remainder of the game. What cost me this game was that I landed 3 straight Tails on SSU in one turn(which I guess happens often) and my 2nd to last prize was my last night Maintenance which I drew too late to matter. So this game lasted 45 minutes so obviously there is no way I can win the 2nd game unless I turn 2 him or something.
Game 2: So I set up and after turn 2 I see there is no way to win in the time allotted to us, so I scoop.

    12-2

I end up getting 3rd because my record was greater than Mikey’s, however he is more deserving of 3rd than I am. I love you =D

Afterwards I go back to my room and sleep for pretty much the rest of the day and night, wake up and make the drive back to St. Louis.

    Props:

I was gladly surprised to see torterra had in fact made top4. I played against this list (I think it was slightly different because he ran 2 celio's) and round 5 and almost pulled off the 5-1 comeback but he ripped 3 ssu and won on time (had the game in 2 turns). Dang mirror matchs. :( lol anyways nice job with the beast. Defiantely was the play for nats, no matter what list. Congrats.

That seems really poor conduct for a National Champion, trying to get an edge on whatever he could, lame.

You rock Colin, I hope I get my invite and see you at Worlds, it's been 3 years since I last saw you.

I asked you if you had dice because the previous games I was playing in I used small dice. My opponents complained that they were too small and could barely see how much damage was on what. So they made me use their dice which were more visible then my see-through clear white dice. So to make your life easier I asked if you had any dice so their wouldnt be any sort of a problem. I hope that clears up that I wasnt tryin to get you in trouble. Anyway congrats on the 3rd place accomplishment. Well earned finish with a well played deck. Holla at cha boi!
