Well, hitmontop is simple enough. it spins like a top.

makuhita is abbreviated from it's japanese name of maku no hita, and I used to know what that meant (I looked it up one time), but i forget now.

Many of the names derive from Japanese, of course...being an English translation of the meaning of the Japanese name. A good example would be "Misty"...whose name in Japanese, "Kasumi" means 'fog' or 'mist'.

Other names are quite a bit more involved. Ho-Oh...or in the Japanese spelling, Ho-ou...translates as 'phoenix'...or more interestingly, as 'king of the Dharma' when queried in an online Japanese Buddhist dictionary.

Lugia...whose 'other' name in the Japanese version of the movie was 'umi no kami' (god/spirit/guardian of the sea) also has an interesting meaning if one goes on the assumption that it is phonetically derived from 'ryujin'...the Shinto dragon-god of the sea.

Hadn't noticed that one, 'Pop - very perceptive of you.

Girafarig - Giraffe (but with the Palindrome - as Girafarig has 2 heads, one on each end.)

    Shuppet - Shadow +Puppet
Banette - Banish + Marionette (a type of puppet show, as I recall?)

Although I would love to post more, I think I should let someone else have a go with the rest of them. (anyone want to guess the one for Muk? :p )

There are some probable erros so far. I don't have time for all, but here are a few:

Metapod= "Half-foot"... King's is probably right, I just wanted to list a literal translation :p

Kakuna: Probably just added an "a" and changed the spelling of "cocoon".

Pidgey-line: If I remember correctly, Pidgeot and Pidgeotto are switched for the Japanese names...

Golbat/duck: "Gol" may mean something special, as neither Gall nore Gold really describe those Pokemon.

Mankey: "Mangey Monkey", also seen in DOnkey Kong Country-"Manky Kong" was an Orangutan who was a bad guy. "Mangey" can refer to either unkept fur or actual mange.

Vulpix-Vulpine refers to foxes, like canine does dogs or feline does cats.

Arcanine="Arch" Canine, the top dog ;) FOr those not familiar with the prefix, "Arch" signifies higher rank: an archbishop out ranks a normal bishop, an archmage out ranks a normal mage, Archangel out ranks a normal angel.

Victreebell: Victory + Bell: remember, copyrightable misspellings are usually common.

    ...

I am out of time, but there are several like that.

Good job for all you did get, FIsh King

    ...

One more thing, "ryu" means dragon, so Staryu=star dragon. Since it's a starfish, its not too much of a stretch.
