Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

I think there should be a minimum IQ needed to use the internet.

Honestly, why do people care so much?
Who cares if someone wants to type "l8er" instead of "later"? I didn't know we were in English class...
Stop criticizing people who don't type like you. That don't care to type like you. Geez is there nothing worse on the internet to whine about? Or, for that matter, nothing worse in life? I type properly most of the time [not on AIM] but I could not care less if someone wants to say "I luv u 2" as opposed to "I love you too." You know what the person is trying to say! You just want to have everyone type to your convenience.

Lighten up. :)

If you think the only place for proper English is in the class room, you're quite mistaken.

I don't really care if people want to use the occasional well known abbreviations. However, using too many is a pain to read. I'm more annoyed by major verb errors, word misuse, and all around grammatical travesties.

EDIT: However, using "u" for "you," "y" for "why," and "r" for "are" is totally unacceptable and just plain lazy.

Yeah, lets just keep the stupid and/or ignorant the way they are by cutting of the greatest source of information available today....:/

If reading someones Topic is a pain just because they use Abbreviations, etc. Then don't read it. Nobody said you have to read anything online. I for one could careless how someone types as long as I can understand it. Of all the Topics one can make, we have to whine amount Grammar? Give me a break. If you find Grammar mistakes in my Topics, keep the corrections to yourself. Am i lazy about my Grammar? Yes i am, do i care what someone thinks? Not really. As long as people understand what i'm saying, it's good enough for me.

the only thing that really annoys me is misusing your, you're, their, there, they're, its, and it's.

I've never really cared about it's and its. The difference between them is only an apostrophe. If someone did it more than once, I'd point out their mistake to them, but if it's only occassionally, I just chalk it up as a typo.

When you type like an idiot or a grammatically impaired toddler, there is quite a large possibility that people won't take you seriously. I know I don't. If you want people to take you seriously and respect you, respect them by making an effort to adhere to common sense.

I think the problem is that a working knowledge of the English language is not common sense. Which is hard to believe since it is taught each year of school.

How do you sit through classes on a subject for 12 years, pass said classes, and still have no idea what's going on when you get to college? Seriously. :|

Easy, I for one never Graduated High School. But as with many schools, they pass you onto the next Grade. Even if you don't pass the Grade, they pass you anyway. Usually the only Grades that kids are held back in, are 1-5. After that, they just push you on to the Next Grade. Did i have the ability to Learn? Yes, Did i try? No. Many kids don't care if they Graduate or not. They just want out of school. I'm Lazy and proud of it. I could have been an "A" student if i wanted. But i chose to not even try. Just because you don't Graduate from High School, or move on to College, Does not mean you can't get a good Job. It just means that your odds are lower of finding one because many Good paying Jobs require High school Diploma, and/or College Education. I myself am a Screen Printer, making a very good Wage. I was lucky enough to find a Job that doesn't require either one. Some may consider my Line of Work to be a Job with very little Skill needed.

English class isn't the only place for proper English. I know.

But why is it "totally unacceptable"? Just because a person wants to shorten words? The reality is that a lot of people don't care about making sure they start their internet sentences with a capital letter and end them with a period. It doesn't bother me, a person who chooses to type with punctuation. Why be so sensitive?

The only problem is when you can't understand what the person is trying to say. But when they say "yea me 2" instead of "yeah, me too." you will understand them.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

That's a really ignorant comment lol.

I have a friend in Harvard [I use this example because Harvard has a lot of prestige] who is extremely intelligent but uses internet slang. He has a very high IQ. Internet speak doesn't make you any less smart or any more stupid.

Our president went to Yale and says things like "internets" and "nucular" so I don't know if my example has any value lol.

I didn't graduate either. I never finished my high school homeschooling (too lazy), and got into college based on my ACT scores. Now, when I decided to attend Digipen, I had to get my GED, but that was merely a formality.

Therefore, I hold those who do graduate high school and go on to college to a standard. I don't expect them to be at my level, but I do expect their diploma to mean something. You'll notice my post only mentioned high school graduates. I don't expect anything out drop outs who don't go to college.

I see you lack reading comprehension. He didn't say anything about them being less smart, just that they wouldn't be taken seriously.

EDIT: I also use geek internet slang when at times. That's quite a different beast.

Maybe not, but it certainly makes it seem that way.

If you think he got into Yale for any reason other than who his daddy is, you're woefully mistaken.

Why be so sensitive?

Because it's the linguistic equivalent of ignoring the draw-one-card-a-turn rule or one-supporter-a-turn rule or one-energy-a-turn rule or one-evolution-a-turn rule... after all, you're just being lazy and shortening things that really shouldn't be shortened, whether it be the game or your sentences.

Plus it makes you look uneducated. I don't want to hang around people who look stupid, after all.

How does Marril know the rules of the Pokemon TCG?
o_O

Freedom of speech doesn't exist on forums, however. Also, making a minimum IQ cutoff would remove far too many people from the internet. Either way, there's no excuse for an intelligent person butchering his own native language.

Thankfully, it's a documented fact that I'm in a high enough percentile to not have to worry about such IQ restrictions affecting me.

^True enough statement: you can't curse, flame other members, etc, but you can make outlandish comments and sound uneducated, yet still go unmoderated.

Also I don't think your TCG analogy works. Saying "nucular" isn't the equivalent of playing two supporters a turn: more like...the linguistic equivalent of not discarding your supporter at the end of your turn (i.e., a minor violation. The meaning of the word is conveyed, yet breaks a technical rule, and has less elegance than desired :p).

But yeah, on the topic of IQ's...Did you guys ever think that there are some brilliant people who shouldn't have any access to the internet? There are many violent, yet brilliant characters who use the mass-circulation of information to their advantage.

No, but abbreviating all sorts of words (e.g. "ur" instead of "your", "y" instead of "why", "u" instead of "you", etc) is just rushing improperly through the language to get your post written quicker. Playing multiple Supporters lets the game end quicker because you're at an improper speed advantage.

It's not perfect, but there's some kind of logic in there.
