OK, let's get this observation out of the way so that we can get through the rest of this insanity. The DS has officially passed the PS2 LTD numbers. We knew this was coming since early this year. We didn't exactly know *when* it would happen, but everybody knew that it *would* happen. It's nice to see it happen during the 2007 season, as the DS sales have been sliding slightly compared to the last couple of years (read Donny's charts). I mean, for crying out loud! Anybody complaining that the DS sales are slipping is insane. The DS, I believe, just posted the second or third largest hardware sales years of ANY gaming hardware in HISTORY. Don't diss the Nintendo DS after this. It has sustained incredibly high levels of sales over a period of two years despite being supply constrained over an entire 1.5 year period. That is about 16 kinds of insanity right there. It might have just peaked for the year, but I'd still expect 200k plus for the next week due to both last minute Xmas sales and the post-holiday specials.
Now for Nintendo's second cash cow. The Wii is another sales monster, posting one of the highest home console sales weeks in history. With 4 games in the top 10, 9 in the top 50, and at least two games poised to hit the million seller list (Fit, Galaxy) and one that's already passed 2 million (Sports). I'm always impressed with the "weakest" system out of the newest generation of consoles. Compared to its two counterparts, it is technically the weakest system by a fairly large margin. It still outsells its competitors this week 4 to 1. Post-holiday slip, but still in the range of 125k+.
I don't understand how the PSP sells. It has the least number of games in the top 50. Its highest ranked game is 33. It's still posting high sales numbers. I don't get it. Most surprising on this list, sales slipped this week compared to last week. Considering that this is the Holiday week, I'm surprised to see sales slip. They'll slip again, to the range of about 100k+.
PS3 is a failure. This is a declarative statement. It has sales comparable to the GCN, and I'd like to see those charts. It will not reach one million sales next year without both a price drop and at least 3 system seller games in the vein of Final Fantasy or Metal Gear. The system just has too much going against it. Compared to the rest of the systems out there, it has the fewest exclusive Killer Apps for the LTD timeframe (Xbox had GoW, Oblivion, Dead Rising, and a couple of others at this time period). The price for the decent version is about 25% more than the price for the *BEST* 360, and more than double the price of the Wii. I'll be supremely surprised if the PS3 gets 5 million sales before this generation is over. I don't think it's gonna make it. It can't come close with only 2 system sellers (MGS, Final Fantasy). And, like the PSP, it dropped sales this week compared to last week. The Japanese love their Sony products. This is pathetic.
