Nintendo/TCPI: Video Game Abbreviation?

It was mentioned to me by my local TO that there is a bit of an issue regarding the referal of "VGC" to being a Nintendo exclusive term to give recognition to "VGC" being a Nintendo hosted/sponcered event.

I see the point, and respect the term to be used for refering VGC events to be used in reflection of use for and used by Nintendo to do so to be recognized by the public. I personally have never thought of this matter, nor looked at it like this until it was mentioned to me.

This site is dedicated to all things Pokemon and really does focus on the card game as the center core of the players. This site is welcoming and welcomes all things Pokemon from all aspects/products and does support those areas in many ways.

As the TCG scene grows and is opening the way to provide us VG'rs the tournaments at many TCPI events like pre-releases, Cities, States...ect-

We should consider creating a term that does not confuse the tournamants at TCPI events and Nintendo events. Even though we use the VGC format/rules to battle by, it does not mean we are actually supported by or even representing Nintendo.

I do think there should be a term to show the difference of Nintendo and TCPI tournaments.

Something like: (example) EBC Electronic Battle Competition to refer to TCPI tournaments.

I would like to hear all of your thoughts- what is a good term to have?

Until TPCI says something about it openly, I don't think anybody has to worry about it. I think you got speculation instead of fact.

VGC is run by TPCi. In the (I think likely) event that they add Cities, SPTs, and Battle Roads to the circuit, they'd still be a part of the VGC series. If you mean side events, they should be called video game competitions or tournaments. Nobody uses the term "Electronic Game."

VGC is pretty much offiical term from what I heard for Video Game Championships.

For any casual ones, I can safely assume the following would be great.

Video Game Tournament VGT
Video Game Event VGE
Video Game League VGL
Cascual Video Game CVG

So yeah.... Just a speculation from my end

^Thanks Jason.

TCPI too my understanding has "barrowed" the term VGC just for the reference of making the VG a part of the events hosted at TCPI events so people have a clue/idea that there is a side/(main if two days are considered) event.

I do not know the exact connection that TCPI and Nintendo share or how they are related/run on the "product" and business side of things, I do not want to provide false or misleading information. It was something I heard, and I am not posative if there will be a separation term so the players/public knows who is hosting/sponcering the event.

If Nintendo says "Here are the locations for this years VGC events--" that does not include the card game at all.
TCPI says "Here are the locations for the next TCG Cities events--" and also include "side events" that include a VG tournament, that shows a big seporation in where and who is hosting an event for the VG.

I think also that it might be of some good to have a term for the difference in what it is people are speaking about- Someone could say the took first place in the VGC at States= but it is not a win at a Nintendo event.

I tossed this subject in here to see if any TO's or Nintendo have anything to say on this matter- and the thoughts of the members as well.

It just could be someday we'll here a term "I took third place at the (insert state/city) VGE last weekend" and no one will know the level or who hosted the event. ( And by "level" I mean the competition area, worldwide/country ect... and who gets the recognition for hosting)

I don't know- just speaking thoughts is all-

VGC has always been run by The Pokemon Company International. The events have been called Video Game Championships since 2009. The organizer and head honcho of VGC works for TPCi. The funding comes from TPCi as does the ruleset. They handle all the events from Regionals to Worlds.

As far as the competitive Pokemon video game community goes, VGC is used to refer to both the set of rules used by TPCi at official events as well as the tournament series itself. It's usually obvious from context. The official term for the metagame is "VG - Modified" from what I can see on the official site though.

I'm looking to run a side event at an SPT and will be positioning it at as a "VGC Side Event" which makes it clear it doesn't count as part of the circuit, but will be using the official VGC ruleset.

Basically what Firestorm said, VGC has always been run by TPCi they aren't borrowing any name. VGC is also a standard ruleset much like when you say TCG most people will assume standard modified. The community as a whole even calls most of these side events VGC rules side events. If you want to be extremely pedantic you can call it VG (Video Game), and still get the message across, all those other names are just ridiculously silly and most players would continue to call it VGC/VG.
