but then who decided to flip the coin?

do we flip another coin for that?

and for that coin flip?

and for that coin flip?

...

<.< >.> >.< <.>

never ending loop much? xD

you're forgetting that allowing the use of dice AT ALL is a concession on japan's part...

If the concession is made toward one aspect of the game (non-start coin flips) then why not to all aspects?

I think it's arbitrary to select the start of the game to be a time when dice aren't to be used >_>

read again, please. no one is saying dice CAN'T BE USED: they CAN be, but it has to be a 'heads/tails' roll rather than 'high roll'...

The only problem with this, is that it should have been enforced 10 years ago.
When you've been playing the game 80% of your lifetime, it becomes second nature to you. I remeber, for about the first year the game was out, people acctually flipped coins. After that everyone did highroll.
It's much easier.

Now that we have to roll the dice as if it was heads/tails, it really screws with my mind. (btw, I think that whoever rolls the dice needs to always pick way before they roll; or perhaps they don't get a choice. The roller should be forced to take heads. That way there will never be any "he called it late arguements").

I don't see why this is a problem at all. It is really a simple move back to the rules. Dice can still be used no change in strategy or luck its all the same.

Wow, im glad most of you are making a big deal out of nothing. The odds arent different AT ALL, the only thing there saying is call heads or tails, instead of just throwing a dice out there and getting ties and wasting time.

Thanks a lot for posting this. I remember the PTO announced this at VA states, but offered no explanation as to why it was changed.

please let me use high rolls... i cant stand this method since it confuses the heck outta ma. highroll is easier for me ;(

haha, this isn't a big deal to me, I will still do high roll if opponent doesn't care. Now, if a judge is standing over my shoulder, I guess I will flip a coin, til then, I will do it my way:p

Can we thumb wrestle to see who goes first?

In all seriousness people.... why is this a big issue....

We are now told we have to do heads/tails to see who goes first.... just do it, and don't complain

Well, nice of them to publish the decision well in advance of Nats, so people can get used to it. I've been advising it might be a requirement since last Worlds (when it was), and recommending/using it in casual play, too.

PKMN is a dynamic system, not like chess which has been the same for a long time; enjoy the changes (tho this is technically a 'correction', not a 'change' such as, e.g. not being able to draw on turn 1, being able, etc.).

I still want some Pokegym dice...

This ruling shouldn't matter much, I mean you have the same basic odds whether you do Heads/Tails or High Roll regardless.

At our recent Regionals, some "out-of-towners" came down for a go and they ALL were flipping coins. During my first round, when my opponent flipped three heads, I called the Judge over to standardize randomization to a D20.

This reenforcement is making players actually talk at the beginning of the match; that'll always lead things down the wrong road.

wait, are you telling me that a judge made someone stop using a coin and made them use a die randomizer?

One of the most fustrating games that I ever played was against someone who practiced coin flipping. During the game he flipped all heads but I managed to barely win anyway. Afterwards he "demonstrated" his technique to me and flipped about 10-11 heads in a row before getting tails. Between that and my kids flipping coins under the table and everywhere else I just don't like coins.

Anyway, I'll ask again. We hear that in Japan they use RPS to see who goes first. That's not in the rulebook either. Will they have to start flipping coins (or rolling 1 die) to see who goes first now?

WELL THIS JUST SUCKS!!! But, does anyone know-if you do "heads/tails", and you call heads and it comes out heads, do you chose to go first or second or do you automatically go first.
Can you please explain why it sucks? Because I am lost here >_>.

Well, I don't see why people think this is a big deal. I mean who really cares how the player is determined to go first? If POP said high roll, would you people say that it stinks and that heads/tails is better? It's POP's rules and it's not that big of a change, heck it's not even a change at all, what it really was, was all of you not following the rules !!!!. I see no reason why this stinks.

Will the Compendium be updated with this?

Todd: They do it this way at worlds. Flip coin or dice roll w/ even = heads, odds = tails. No RPS to start a game at Worlds.
