This is a way of recognizing people who are willing to share creative and competitive ideas.

If your Guru Challenge responses were not deemed as 'useful,' please read some of the point-earning responses and adjust your approach.

The goal of Guru Points is to make people feel good about sharing ideas.
Note: Simply stating the obvious may not be worthy of earning Guru Points.

Note: The list may be updated weekly, so don't fret if your points don't add up on a daily basis

Guru Points will be available in select threads throughout the Strategy and Rulings Forum.

Wow, someone's bitter about not having their Pokemon know-how on display so people know to take him seriously.

But seriously, that's what they're for - to keep a running record of who provides useful advice to incoming players, and/or who know what they are talking about.

    I beg to differ.

    1. They give you something to do. You give good answers to posts, you get Guru points as a thank you knod.

    2. People become encouraged to compete/contribute to see if they can top the list.

    3. The result is the forum gets packed with great information.

    4. Top scorers go on to be "GURUs."

    5. The overall spirit of the forum becomes one of fun, comradery, and sharing. :thumb:

We're considering giving people a custom title under their name if they can accumulate an insane amount of Guru Points (but that's only at the discussion level right now).

Anyway, what it REALLY does is adds a little 'something-fun-to-do' when you come to the computer.

Last time I actively did GuruPoints, the board was on fire for a hot minute (then I got overwhelmed with keeping up with the points!).

This time, I'm going to designate "Guru Topics" just so I can manage to read and reward those who want to "play."

Rogue, this is a great idea. I obviously will not be on this list due to Navy life and always working, but I think this can help that idea I presented to you a while back.

Most interesting. Incidentally, what would be considered an insane amount of points?

Do only players get Guru points?
Or will there be threads for collectors available?

    Very interesting question.

I'm mostly asking "strategy" questions that have to do with decks, combos, and Spirit of the Game.

but, NOONE is excluded from contributing answers and earning Guru Points.

You simply find a thread with "GURU" in the title and jump right in.

I think 10 points should give the title, junior guru, 20 points guru, etc.

R.A , While I fully agree with the spirit and goals of Guru Points, I believe there is nothing wrong with a little incentive component to motivate great players to share their knowledge, and also offer them some good exposure to showcase their status as Gurus. So why don't you chat with folks like Pop or Big Daddy and get help from PCI to enhance your program with things like -

1- the Top Guru of the month gets XX Great Prime Card , or 10 Packs, or equivalent ..
2- The Top Guru of the season gets a booster box ...
3- the top Guru of the quarter gets to have a 30 min chat with XX ( insert your top 10 player name here, provided they agree .. ) to exchange ideas and thoughts on decks and strategy ..
4- The top 5 Gurus are always in display in the front page of the Gym
5- The top Guru gets to write a front-page article that is ensured to be published ...

Hopefully you get the point . That will motivate people more to get Guru points, and will give more Stature to being a top Guru .. I'm sure there are tons of more ideas to insert here. I think the ultimate goal should be to reach a point where being a "Top 5 Guru" at the Gym gives you stature and recognition at league and tournaments by everyone, and this will spark more quantity and quality of contributions into the Gym.

    Hope this helps. Great initiative.

Rob, I believe that while you have a valid point, being a Guru is NOT to compete to see who is the best, it is to try and get people to be more active in this community. I feel that with what you are doing, you are basically saying it is a competition to get the most guru points.

It is a fun competition, and maybe more is to come after this guru stuff. Perhaps a collaborate deck analysis like they used to do.

    If I may make a suggestion -

Glancing over these topics, there's lots of good information in them, but they're going to get drown in the current of new threads. Assuming these keep rolling out for awhile, would it be worth having a sub-forum to sneak them into? I'm not sure if that's within your power as a moderator, but it would keep us from losing them.

My only question is who determines who gets how many points?

I've seen a couple post from the people that have higher points and their decks list aren't that great:

Then some that have a good deck idea but don't many points like this one: http://pokegym.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1911693&postcount=2

I read in your "grading" system that you give out more points to ideas that might actually work in this metagame. Do you honestly thing that getting 2 Stage 2s and a Stage 1 fast enough to compete with this T2/T3 format?

The "grading system" is absolutely subjective. That's why I don't tag prizes and stuff on them. The points are just a way of saying "thank you for taking the time to post ideas."

That being said, I do try to have SOME sort of rhyme-and-reason to the system.

The first example used a list that I've actually seen work (3-2 in tournament). The author also gave some details as to HOW to run the list (that's VERY important). It wasn't a brilliant list so it did not earn a 3 or 4, but the premise and detail were there, so it will help people get started if they want to try the idea out... so it got a 2.

The second example had a couple of lists, but with very little instruction/detail about how to run them. Just posting lists only helps people who have the ability to create and play their own. So, it gives experienced players a head-start on the idea, but those who need more guidance will spend hours trying to figure out why each card is even in the list to begin with.

So, when it all comes down to it, I guess I'm looking at the "teaching/coaching" ability of your posts IN ADDITION TO the lists themselves. (very consistent with what I do in the "I Play Theme Decks" contest). I guess that's just how my mind's rubric is designed to work.. lol

I'm only updating once per week.

That way I can sit down, compile, and post in one big batch.
    (usually will be on Sundays)

Also, people won't tend to change their posts based on what someone else 'got' and can earn scores on the merit of their own ideas/thoughts.
