I am working on a timeline for the Pokemon TCG in order to allow new players (especially returning players) a feel to where the Pokemon TCG stands at today. Also this should provide a useable referenece to knowing the original promotions for each promo card out there, when each expansion came out, and when each kind of event happened.

I need all of your help to complete and correct this timeline. My memory doesn't have all of the facts straight I am sure. So please tell me anything you know that I don't and correct me where I have information wrong at any place.

This timeline covers Pokemon TCG expansions, promotions and tournaments, that have taken place in the U.S. Only. I feel I just don't have the resources to go internationally unfortunity. Hopefully this will be a great resource to everyone. Also any thoughts on this are apriciated.

Wow, that's pretty comprehensive... nice list. I applaud you for taking the time and effort to make that up!

Little bits of nitpickiness.

November 1999

When Pokémon: The First Movie came out in theaters from Kids WB, Wizards of the Coast join in a promotion which released promo cards Electrabuzz #2, Mewtwo #3, Pikachu #4, and Dragonite #5.

There's no 'r' in Electabuzz. Same goes for the Best of Game reprints (so that I don't have to copy/paste them and sound redundant).

September 2002

Introduction of Pokémon-e Trading Card Game and Nintendo e-Reader for Game Boy Advance
Expedition: Base Set released.

There's no "Base Set" in that set's name. It's just "Expedition".

Introduction of Poke-Powers and Poke-Bodies (Pokémon Powers discontinued)

Pokemon Powers weren't discontinued, just reinvented as Poke-Powers and Poke-Bodies.

Nintendo Power February 2004 gives aways Rapidash #51 and Ho-oh #52 (same offer at Pokémon CenterNY)

Either the NP version or the PC version had a stamp, while the other didn't. Don't remember which.

June 2003

EX: Ruby and Sapphire (Nintendo of America’s first set, start of the second age)

Pokemon USA, Inc.

End of Baby Pokémon cards

I wouldn't consider that official until Sandstorm, since that set had the first "new babies".

Also, I'm not sure where it belongs in the timeline, but I don't see mention of Nintendo Power's non-holo Kyogre EX and Groudon EX.

Submitting it as an article for PokeGym when you're done? It's the kind of thing that's worth keeping available.
How about putting in when the Chats started (Feb 2000, iirc)?

Oh, and you could include the dates that the WotC PokeGym operated. We were an official site then!

The Test League was in place when Base Set came out. The promo at the Test League was the Pre-release Clefable. The Arcanine was later in the regular league cycle. The League as we knew it started in Summer of 99. Seasons were 6 or 8 weeks long, so you may want to adjust your timelines in that respect. Also in Summer of 99 was the Mall Tour - first chance to get ahold of the singing Jigglypuff Promo outside of the Japanese Pokemon Music CD.

June 2002 - First WotC Team "Championship" Tournament at Origins

July 2003 - Team Championships at GenCon - First ever Team Rochester

The RS Challenges were in September of 2003.

don't have a Pokemon trivia contest with mysterioustrainer!

Nice list Craig. There's no way I can add anything other than the banning of Slowking after almost every top 8 deck at Worlds 2002 was Slowking/something.

the format rotations to EXP on and RS on were m,ade the 1st of October, both of them, not in September.

nice list, GJ

No, that shouldn't count.
It was a preview at a limited event.

Awk! I can't believe I misspelled a Pokemon!

There's no "Base Set" in that set's name. It's just "Expedition".
Actually it is called Expedition: Base Set because it was the base set of the Pokemon-e TCG. (note the e in Pokemon-e) The packaging even says so.

Pokemon Powers weren't discontinued, just reinvented as Poke-Powers and Poke-Bodies.
This is irrelevant to correct. It can be seen as either way.

Either the NP version or the PC version had a stamp, while the other didn't. Don't remember which.
It was the Pokemon Center NY versions.

Pokemon USA, Inc.
Actually ever since Pokemon USA, Inc. had first started back in 2001 I believe, they have always been the overseers of the Pokemon TCG to WotC. Nintendo of America is more like what WotC was now because they do the distribution. However Pokemon USA, Inc. is now in complete control of Organized Play programs for the Pokemon TCG.

I wouldn't consider that official until Sandstorm, since that set had the first "new babies".
The Basic Pokemon cards with the Baby Evolution Poke-Power are not Baby Pokemon cards. They are say Basic Pokemon right on the card. So I can't consider this.

Also, I'm not sure where it belongs in the timeline, but I don't see mention of Nintendo Power's non-holo Kyogre EX and Groudon EX.
Nintendo Power had these cards? When? I only remember Scrye having them.

It was my plan in the long run but I want to keep this open for as much help as possible for now. I want this time line to be perfected. I will put in the chat history.

Oh, and you could include the dates that the WotC PokeGym operated. We were an official site then!
I thought I did.

That is the info I have been needing! Thank you so much! I knew I was murdering the 99 timeline since my experience with the Pokemon TCG was very minimal back then.

June 2002 - First WotC Team "Championship" Tournament at Origins
Good idea.

July 2003 - Team Championships at GenCon - First ever Team Rochester
I remember that now. Thanks.

You sure? I could have sworn it was August.

Actually I dare all of you to come to my trivia side event I have planned for at Colorado State Championship and you could win Mysterious Trainer's promo cards! And you might learn something.

By the ways, until now, all of this came out of the top of my head.

I think our most recent rotation occured in September. Let me check on that... Nope I was wrong. Thanks for that.

Good idea. We wanted them to be introduced then since all the staff got them, all of the competitors got them, etc.

Here's a website with a timeline that, for the early stuff anyway, I believe is accurate.

http://www.raichu12.com/Articles/Timeline.html

I know that base set was released in the US in Jan. 1999.
Thanks that will be very helpful.

what about the DCI suspension of Phil Mondielo?
That needs to stay in the past in my opinion. This sort of history doesn't provide anything useful to us.

Thanks for all of your help! Any more help, especially the Year 3 classic promos would be useful.

Actually, the RS Challenges WERE in August...my oldest had to miss it because of Boy Scout camp.

Nice work! :)

Sorry, missed the PokeGym reference. We closed in August 2003 as an official site and migrated here, if you want to include that.

Here is the first official PUI event: The R/S prerelease at the Pokemon Center: http://www.pojo.com/Features/2003/061603b.html
June 14, 2003.

And you should say PUI instead of Nintendo when referring to the US TCG.
I know PUI always makes that correction, and they should know.

Well it is hard to seperate, what PUI does for the Pokemon TCG today and Nintendo of America does for the Pokemon TCG today. I know that Pokemon USA, Inc. makes the cards and runs the OP. I know that Nintendo of America does the distributing and marketing of the cards for the most part. However there is also alot of gray area as well so it is hard to exact it.

Looking at Pokepop's post on the link with pictures, i like to know whether EX in the name of sets are known as Extra or Extreme?
A few months ago, I was told of it being called Extra for EX

The use of the word "extreme" in the article title was mine, not PUI's.
Like all brand names, it means what you want it to mean.
Like Marvel's X-Men, "extra" is probably the main thing that they are going for, but you won't be able to pin them down to that, I'm sure.

Yeah, I went back and looked at some stuff we have in the archives last night. The RS Challenges were August/September to fill the gap between GenCon and the beginning of OP in October.
