Recalibrating the Wheel: Revising Older Cards for a New Releas

Salutations fellow Pokégym members.

As of last few years, I have had time to reflect upon many things; what kind of format I would enjoy playing in and consider "balanced", older cards and formats, I enjoyed, Unlimited play, and cards I would like to see return. This all recently came together in an unusual manifestation; what cards would be fun to see "return" to Modified, even if heavy errata is required? What cards would be "safe" to remake in this way? Would any of these cards being remade improve (at least by my standards) Unlimited play?

That is the focus of this thread. I will be posting some Create-A-Cards featuring older cards I would like to see re-made (usually with alterations) for the current card pool. In most cases, I would like the names to remain the same as the original versions, because I wish to alter Unlimited at the same time I am diversifying options for Modified.

I am interested in seeing the ideas others have had as well, and receiving feedback and engaging in discussion on what is posted (following the board rules of course). I will begin with a few that I find "obvious", as they will really explain my course of action, as well as some cards I believe may be required for balance due to unfortunate realities of the card pool. In the interest of saving space, I will be leaving out universal reminder text for some classes of cards, e.g. standard Item text, standard Supporter text, etc.

Name: Slowking
Category: Pokémon
Type: Psychic
Stage: 1 (Evolves from Slowpoke)
HP: 80
Weakness: :psychic:x2
Resistance: None
Retreat: :colorless::colorless::colorless:
Text: Ability - Mind Games
While this Pokémon is Active, whenever your opponent plays a Trainer card, you may flip a coin. If heads, that that card does nothing. Put it on top of your opponent's deck.
Attack: :)psychic::psychic:) Mind Blast [20+]
Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 10 more points of damage and the Defending Pokémon is now Confused.
Explanation: While technically Slowking from Neo Genesis still wouldn't be quite correct (it should have a "Pokémon Power" that stops working while it is affected by Special Conditions), it is much more accurate than the current translation. Considering I would prefer Abilities be ruled to be equivalent to Pokémon Powers with respect to cards (so that what affects one affects the other), which in turn would mean the effects that apply to both "Poké-Bodies and Poké-Powers" (which were ruled to count as applying to Pokémon Powers) would also apply to Abilities.

All that is then meaningless to Modified, besides perhaps a very quirky deck, but would be huge for Unlimited... especially as several suggested cards I am posting or will post later will make the current dominant decks less reliable and hopefully promote more diversity.

Name: Focus Band
Category: Trainer
Type: Item
Sub-Type: Pokémon Tool
Misc: Ace Spec
Effect Text: If the Pokémon this card is attached to would be Knocked Out by damage from the attack of an opponent's Pokémon, it is not Knocked Out but has 10 HP remaining and discard this card.

Name: Focus Band
Category: Trainer
Type: Item
Sub-Type: Pokémon Tool
Effect Text: If the Pokémon this card is attached to has no damage on it, if it would be Knocked Out by damage from the attack of an opponent's Pokémon, it is not Knocked Out but has 10 HP remaining.
Explanation: Another card that was, historically speaking, both overpowered and "flippy". I give two options to make it more faithful to the source material but keep it balanced. I am not completely satisfied with either, but both should be improvements. Essentially bringing back the original Focus Band as an Ace Spec but dropping the flip makes it a powerful card... but we still have Tool Scrapper and we still have Hypnotoxic Laser.

The second take removes the flip but makes it very valuable in this format to small Pokémon... especially if they are hard to do anything but OHKO and are likely to take advantage of Max Potion. I may be underestimating it, but again with Tool Scrapper and Hypnotoxic Laser, it isn't foolproof even while removing the coin flip.

Without the coin flip, it isn't just a matter of "luck" either.

Name: Item Finder
Category: Trainer
Type: Item
Misc.: Ace Spec.
Effect Text: Discard 2 cards from your hand. (If you cannot discard 2 cards, you can't play this card.) Put a Trainer from your discard pile back into your hand.
Explanation: Simply put, this helps everyone as long as players can remain mellow. The Computer Search fiasco is over, I hope; plus whatever side you fall on with regards to it, my hope with many of these cards is for a gift set style release; finding out that older copies of Item Finder aren't tournament legal isn't as big of a deal this way, and if you couldn't get a Dowsing Machine, you get another shot.

Making a good Ace Spec essentially more available is a small benefit to Modified in my estimation. It is game changing for Unlimited, and should keep other Ace Spec cards (let alone several classic cards and strategies) in line.

Name: Professor Oak
Category: Trainer
Type: Supporter
Effect Text: Discard your hand and draw 7 cards.

Explanation: This could be a concern for Modified; four of this and four of Professor Juniper might actually be used, and used to vicious efficiency. Otherwise, again, this improves Unlimited by shutting down a lot of nasty draw engines.

Name: Imposter Professor Oak
Category: Trainer
Type: Supporter
Effect Text: Your opponent discards his or her hand and draws 7 cards.

Explanation: This makes excessive draw power quite risky and would finally give milling decks some teeth. Remember, you are giving up your usage of a draw Supporter for the turn in order to do this.
