Sup. I've been sorta working on this on and off for, oh, about 2 months. This is most definately rated PG, at least, once it gets to the later stages of the story. I'll try and keep it as G as I possibly can, but certain plot points might dictate otherwise...

This is basically taking myself, with a couple interesting additions, and tossing myself into the Pokemon universe, though Pokemon themselves won't be seen until chapter 8 (I think).

Chapter 1: A New Beginning

Peace and tranquility. The area had always been like this. Nobody drove, nobody fought. Everything simply … existed … as though nothing had ever been built, as if the nature had not been violated in any way by human ideas, thoughts, movements, or buildings. The people enjoyed their lives as inhabitants of a type of paradise, rather than dominating the area like so many human civilizations had done over so many centuries.

Of course, this did not mean that the inhabitants were living in anything less than modern dwellings. The area was well built up. Everybody enjoyed all the trappings of modern living without the need for want, or the selfish tendencies of humanity.

None of this mattered to the young boy who had only recently entered the Saffron City Gym. To him, the only thing that mattered was his research; both on himself, and on the Pokemon that he cared so deeply for. He completely ignored the amazing force of nature and humanity living within nature that surrounded him. The City was largely a collection of middle class houses built around the Pokemon Gym located in the center of the city. Right next to the Gym, the largest Pokemon Center in the region was anchored by one of the greatest schools of Pokemon learning in the entire world. This particular institution went above and beyond the limitations of every other school. The enterance exam was beyond anything that the boy had ever encountered in his distinguished schooling career. It tested his knowledge of math, science, several languages including both English and Japanese, and general Pokemon knowledge. Also, there was an additional test, but the boy could not figure out exactly what the test was for. It consisted largely of memorization and pattern recognition techniques, but those could have been tested amongst the other tests that the boy had to undergo.

In the end, he really did not know exactly how or why he managed to get in here, only that he was very eager to continue his research to its inevitable conclusion. He eyed the picked-sized device that he held in his hand. This device held all of the research that he had collected for most of his life, with his most important breakthroughs coming in the last couple of years. His research focused mostly on Pokemon strategies, and Pokemon-human relationships and their effect on the strength of Pokemon in battle. For the most part, his research had supported the longstanding thought that treating Pokemon with respect and care helps in making them much more powerful. However, there was a portion of his research that made absolutely no sense when combined with the rest.

He was hoping that he could gain some new insight as to the nature of Pokemon through his studies at this adacamy, as its database was much more extensive than anything that the boy had ever had access to before. He could only hope that he would have enough time in between his school work, which he thought would be far more intensive than what he had been exposed to before.

All of this was far from his mind as he walked through the massive two-story double doors that marked the main enterance to the Saffron City Institute for Pokemon and Human Relationships. As he entered the doors, he found a woman waiting for him. She was a little shorter than 6 feet tall, slim, and somewhat attractive. She was wearing a skintight red and pink leotard with a short, deep red skirt. Her hair was straight and long, pointed back behind her head, ending in a slight curl. She wore a red headband, apparently to keep her dazzling hair out of her face. Her eyes, however, were her most revealing physical feature. They were a deep shade of green, and contained an intensity that the boy had never seen before. A fire burned behind them, but she managed to keep it hidden from most people she came across.

Before he could analyze her any more, she began to introduce herself. Flatly, without any emotion, she stated simply, “Welcome to the Saffron City Institute for Psychic Development. I apologize for deceiving you about the name of this school. However, it is imperative that the world does not know who or what we are. We are funded in part by the Pokemon League and Public Funds. Many people have negative impressions of Psychic users. Thus, we must maintain our secrecy from the world. My name is Sabrina. I am the Pokemon Gym Leader of Saffron City.” Her brow furrowed slightly. The boy’s face had not changed since she started speaking. “I see this does not surprise you. Care to explain why?”

The boy smiled. “You really need to take better care of your computer information. It was quite easy to break your security codes. The use of various misnomers of people with telekinetic abilities as passwords was the dead giveaway. Your encryption techniques are really quite ancient. It only took me a couple of hours to break your code. I was quite surprised at some of the information that you had almost in the public domain.” He crossed his arms. “In fact, it was far too easy. Why would you store a list of all of your students, alumni, and staff in such a public location?”

Sabrina smiled, the first indication that she had some human tendancies after all. “It was a test. I wanted to make sure that you were the right candidate. Your credentials were quite high. I needed a way of checking your abilities. Do you remember the person who administered the enterance exams to you?”

“More than vaguely, why?” The boy cocked his head slightly, unsure of how that person fit in to the current conversation.

Sabrina took a step towards the boy. “He was there for two reasons. First, he was the proctor of the exam to your particular school. However, his second job was far more important.” She crossed her arms, the boy knowing that she had much more to explain to him. “He was supposed to project a psychic image across the classroom, one powerful enough so that only people strongly attuned to psychic brainwaves would be able to understand it. The memory and pattern recognition tests were a test of your psychic abilities. The first and second pictures that you were shown were exactly the same. However, the proctor was sending out minor mindscrambling brainwaves that have the effect of making attuned people see what we want them to see. When you correctly outlined the differences in the same pictures, I knew that you were an excellent candidate.”

She turned her back on him. “What I didn’t know, however, was how powerful your untrained psychic abilities were, so I had the proctor imprint a series of passwords into your brain. That was the reason our computer networks ere so easy for you to infiltrate.” She turned to find the boy gazing out a window, all but ignoring her speech. “I see that this holds no interest to you.” She put a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Come, we shall go to your room. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

The boy turned towards Sabrina. “Actually, I’m more interested in your databases. From everything that I’ve seen, it will help my research to the point where it might finally be completed sufficiently enough for my first submission to the Pokemon League. I’m very anxious to continue my research.”

As he turned, he heard a voice in his head. If you wish. However, there are still many things that you must learn before you can effectively use our systems. The boy turned, a look of shock on his face. Sabrina bowed slightly, obviously slightly impressed with herself. “That is only the tip of the iceberg. Our computer systems run on psychic thought. If you wish full access to our systems in order to complete your research, you are going to need more psychic training than you currently have.” She extended her hand towards one of the many hallways surrounding her. “Now, then. Shall I escort you to your room, Recruit Bull of Blackthorn?”

I don't usually read other people's stories, but the title of this one seemed interesting, so I decided to check it out.
I must say, it's got everything a good chapter one needs - backstory and setup, character description...frankly, I'd say description is definitely one of your strong points, you do a FAR better job of describing human characters than I do.
My only criticism is that this story may go over the heads of many readers - your description of the relationships between technology and psychic power was rather unappealing in that it took so long that it detracted attention from the story. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but it just seems like the (over?)detailed description of the encoding systems and whatnot detracts from the storyline itself.

That chapter is simply an introduction to the character. The tech descriptions are meant to emphasize both his brain and his bloated ego. Believe me, there is little to no tech stuff in future chapters.

This story is basically throwing a stylized version of myself and some old friends of mine (who people who have been around long enough will know INSTANTLY) tossed into a completely unrealistic situation that they are trying to make realistic. Still working on wording in the second chapter, I just wanna see what people think about this so far...

I guess that 5 days is enough time for people to absorb that. Let's move on to the next chapter. Mods, please let me know if this looks like it's going in a bad direction for this board. I've been watching rated-R Asian movies for about 4 months now, so my sense of PG movies is more than a little skewed. Thanks!

Chapter 2 – “Meeting”

Bull followed Sabrina into the oversized elevator at the end of the Pokemon Center hallway. He was thinking mostly about his research, his mind trained at being one tracked. About thirty seconds into the elevator trip, he noticed that something was missing. “Where is my luggage? I had a lot of important equipment in there.”

Sabrina looked somewhat taken aback, like that wasn’t the question she was thinking he would ask. “Your luggage… One of the staff members took it up to your study area. Your room is in a completely different place. As far as your clothing goes, we have a fairly strict dress code within the institution. It helps in focusing the mind if the body is not distracted by clothing.” The elevator stopped. “Ahh, this is your floor. 13, just like you requested. I’m afraid the room that you requested was already taken, but we got close in…”

“It’s fine,” Bull interrupted. “Only the floor number matters. One of my side projects into the nature of superstition and luck. Don’t worry, my Pokemon strength research is still my top priority. The superstition and luck thing is just a minor hobby to keep my mind focused.”

Sabrina looked mildly surprised. “I’m impressed. Your ability to think on multiple levels is quite impressive. Still…” She motioned towards the wall behind her. “You aren’t quite on the level of the other recruits your age. Not yet, at least. That will take a couple of months of intense training.” The door opened without a sound, and without Sabrina touching anything on the door.

Bull raised an eyebrow. “Your psychic talents, I take it? Impressive demonstration. Not quite as impactful as the mindspeaking you did earlier, but good enough to snap me back into myself.”

Bull walked into the room only to come face to face with something he had never envisioned he would be living with, not at this stage of his life at least. A young woman about Bull’s age of thirteen sat at one of the two desks in the room. She was a little bit taller than him, with streaming red hair that stretched well below her waist. Her face was fair, but innocent, as if she refused to show any part of her age. Her body, on the other hand, belied that image completely. Her body was the envy of girls three to five years her senior. She was wearing a very modest white one-piece dress that didn’t reveal much of her skin or body, but it shone through nonetheless. Just looking at her made Bull blush.

He stopped short, and whispered to Sabrina, “Are you sure this is my room? I thought that the living floors had been segregated by gender by law. Are you sure that we are at the right place?”

Sabrina looked at him serenely. “Yes. However, we run just outside the realm of League laws because of our secretive status.” She turned her head towards the room, looking at the girl inside. “We find here that sexuality is a major distraction to our students. In order to remove that distraction, we find that it is best to have them confront it during their personal time as well as during class time. Every single dormitory room in this institution contains pairs that we have concluded will be sexually distracting to both people involved. Every class is made so that students will have to confront their sexual desires during class time as well, especially in our psychic training classes.” Sabrina crossed her arms. “It’s a school policy, and one that I’ve agreed with ever since we began.”

Bull nodded, putting a hand to his forehead. “Makes sense. Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but it makes sense.” Bull walked forward into the room, where the young woman had not yet moved. Bull started to talk to her, but she didn’t so much as acknowledge his presence. Bull tried again, same response. What’s going on here? Why doesn’t she say anything?

The girl looked up and glanced around the room once before her eyes rested on Bull’s face. She smiled, something that no girl had ever done to Bull. I’ve been waiting … see who … be my roommate. It’s nice to … that I got paired … somebody who has that … of talent as a psychic. The transmission wasn’t quite as strong as Sabrina’s, nor did it come completely, but Bull got most of it.

Bull flinched a little bit, and looked behind him for Sabrina. But she had already left the room, apparently to do something much more important at that point. He looked back to the girl with surprise written all over his face. “I transferred that? How? I’ve never been able to do something like that before!” Bull sat down on the bottom bunk of the beds in the room, which he noticed had been made in a light shade of pink.

I … idea. … guess … talent …

Bull shook his head. “Please, speak it. I’ve never had any training as a psychic before. It’s difficult for me to take psychic contact for very long.”

The girl bowed her head. “OK. I guess it was too much for me to think that a newbie would be able to pick up the intricacies of psychic speaking that quickly. Oh well.” She sat back in her chair at her desk and crossed her legs. “I have no idea why I could hear you so clearly. I think that it might be that you are simply a very talented psychic with a lot of potential. You just need to learn how to control your transmissions.” She crossed her arms.

Bull was looking down, his head in his hands, elbows on his knees. “Interesting. I never even thought that I had any talent outside of my research. Strange…” Bull continued to look at his feet, thinking deeply for several minutes on the subject. When he looked up again, he saw the smiling face of the girl very near to his own face. Bull flinched and blushed again.

The girl stood up from her crouched position in front of Bull and smiled. “Heh, I was wondering when you’d snap out of that.” Bull’s face reddened. The girl turned her back on him, her hair flowing out from behind her, twisting as her body twisted. “I don’t believe that we have been properly introduced.” She turned her head to face Bull, keeping her back to him. “My name is Cassidy.”

Bull was frozen in the bed, barely able to move from his thoughts. He stammered a reply, “Umm … uh … Bull …” He was surprised he managed that much of a response. He was still unable to control himself around her, and it was getting worse with time.

Cassidy frowned slightly, turning her head away from Bull. “Bull, is it?” She turned, hair flaring again, and put her hands on her hips. “OK. I want to know a little bit about you, and I’m certain you want to know a little bit about me as well. Do you want to go first?” She sat down on the bed next to Bull and took his hand.

Bull looked into her eyes, and was immediately comforted. “OK. I don’t know where I was born, but I’ve spent the last few years at the Pokemon School in Blackthorn City…”

Hmm...well, I'd say you've definitely been influenced by those Asian movies, and some of the content in this chapter showed it. I tend to be easily influenced by what I read and watch as well, so I wouldn't worry TOO much about it - just try reading over your chapter before you post it, but do it at a time when your head is as clear as it can be, so that your judgement will be minimally influenced by television or books.
Besides that, another good set-up chapter. Can't wait for the action of the story to begin.

Also, small note, in the very last sentence of the chapter, you misspelled "Blackthorn".

Well, yeah. It's kinda meant to be influenced by those Asian movies. The entire Pokemon series is Asian based. It's only natural for the story to be written in that manner.

Also, this chapter has actually been written for a few months. I've actually written up to chapter 7 or something like that. I just don't like posting everything all at once. Probably once a week, or something like that, till I'm caught up with my other post of the story. I really don't know what to do with the next chapter, though. Might just skip it. Who knows...

I wasn't referring to the fact that they were Asian. I was referring to the fact that they were Rated R, and caused you to put some borderline PG-13 subject material in this chapter.

I'm confused to what was rated R about the 2nd chapter. Could you explain what was?

Bullados: Very descriptive:smile:

No, nothing was rated R in the chapter. The movies he watched were rated R, and consequently, some of the content in the chapter was probably PG-13, a more mature rating than it might otherwise be.

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. Yeah, I guess. I'm sorta using DBZ and Everybody Loves Raymond as my benchmarks of what's acceptable. Basically, if Goku can be shown naked several times in a single episode of DBZ, and Frank Boone can say the stuff that he says, then I try to go no further than that.

Oh, and Chan, thx for the compliment!

Chapter 3 -- Relaxation

Bull walked along the ground floor of the Institution, as usual, lost deep in thought. His classes, difficult as they were supposed to have been, didn’t seem to bother Bull all that much. His research, stalled at the moment due to the time he was spending on classes, was likewise far from his mind. Rather than focusing on these two issues, he found himself thinking more and more about Cassidy, and about something about her that sent him shivering.

No. No, it wasn’t something about her that was frightening him. It was something about himself, as much as he didn’t want to admit it. You got past that three years ago. It doesn’t matter anymore. It won’t happen again, you made sure of it. Focus instead of what’s going on in front of you… Bull’s thoughts were interrupted as he walked into a wall, not realizing his own walking speed or the space surrounding him.

Shaking his head, trying to clear the cobwebs from his most recent brush with his own lost focus, he looked at the wall he had just walked into. There was a sign there, posting towards various points of interest within the Institution. One of these in particular caught Bull’s eye.

“Hot springs, huh,” Bull mumbled to himself, thinking out loud without actually realizing it. Might be a good idea “to relax a little…” Bull’s voice trailed off as he followed the sign’s arrow, again starting to lose himself in his own thoughts. However, this time he made sure to keep a portion of his awareness on his surroundings, searching for the locker room entrance to the hot springs he had just discovered.

After walking the hallway for about five minutes, possibly less, probably much more, he found a wooden door with a sign next to it. “Hot springs, Men entrance”. Good. he thought as he walked through the doors, taking notice of the light streaming through a nearby window. It should be early enough that most people are still in class. I got lucky this semester. Might as well take advantage of it. He walked into the locker room, discovering that none of the lockers were occupied. He was also pleased to find a large pile of folded towels near the locker room exit. Smiling for the first time since he first met Cassidy, he began to undress himself in preparation for the hot springs. Soon, he had left his clothes in one of the lockers, wrapped himself in a towel, and stepped out of the locker room into the spring area.

Even at Bull’s state of distraction, he could easily notice the incredible ambiance of the springs. Trees, rocks, water, steam. Bull could hardly believe that such a natural formation could exist within the stark steel surroundings of the institution. He could smell the lilac flowers that seemed to saturate the entire area, and he could feel his shoulders drop, relaxed for once. He walked towards the large, egg shaped spring, feeling the warmth and cleansing power of the steam against his skin with every step he took. A pause at the steps to the pool, he closed his eyes for a moment, allowing all of the tension he had kept bottled inside him to release, and he could feel his muscles relax even before getting into the pool. The first step brought such a sensation that again he could hardly believe that the entire area was purely natural. The water was pleasantly warm, enough to relax sore and tired muscles, but not so much that it would overwhelm his senses and destroy the experience.

Ever modest, Bull kept his towel firmly in place as he stepped into the pool, placing a dry towel near the steps to get out of the pool. After wading and scouting for a minute, he chose a spot in the spring opposite from the steps. He submerged himself down to the neck, and leaned back against the edge of the pool, allowing his thoughts to drift again. Unlike earlier, walking in the Institution hallways, his thoughts had no particular order to them, coming randomly, though they had coherence to them.

This feels good. Haven’t been in a hot spring like this in a very long time. Long time? Long time since I talked to anybody, really. I’ve been too guarded. Middle school really did a number on me. Guarding against myself is the only way to protect everybody else. Cassidy. Good lord. How do I protect her? She’s really too nice for me to let her get hurt.

Bull flinched.

Stop. You’re only making matters worse. Think about something else. School? My classes. Psychic projection. Not very difficult, really. There has to be a way to tone down my abilities to the point where I’m not knocking people out just by basic communication. Shouldn’t really be all that difficult. Probably easier than talking to Cassidy. Man, how do you even talk to a girl without her either slapping you or ignoring you? There’s gotta be some way. She’s cool. Love just being around her. Why do I turn into a slobbering idiot the moment I open my mouth, though?

Another flinch.

You came in here to get away from your normal worries. Relax. What else is there? Something soothing. Research? Not much new there, but it’s worth going over the data I’ve got. With a few exceptions, the power of a Pokemon depends on the way that a Trainer trains that Pokemon. Giovanni’s Pokemon are the only really powerful ones to be trained by somebody who treats them like crap. I need to know why those Pokemon are so powerful given their training. Man, I wish I had that kind of power. Then, maybe, I might not have to worry about myself. Or how I look to Cassidy. Power. How do I get it? Training, well, that doesn’t seem to really help. Totodile looks no different now than he did when I got him. Certainly not a Pokemon to be particularly proud of showing off. Especially to Cassidy. I don’t know what will impress her. Power? Kindness? Strategy? Ability? How can I get to her?

Bull felt the water move. He assumed that another guy had gotten into the pool, which was fine with him, as long as the other guy didn’t try and bother him. Bull opened his eyes, noticing an orange tint on the clouds above him. How long have I been in here? Does it really matter? Bull closed his eyes again, still lying against the side of the spring. This is nice. Haven’t felt like this in…

Bull felt something grab his hand. Instinctively, he pulled his arm away from whatever grabbed him. The thing continued to hold on to his hand, even held on tighter. Bull sat up quickly and looked around, trying to find what exactly was annoying so much.

Eyes.

Only eyes. Bull pulled away further so that he could see a little bit better. As he pulled away, he realized that Cassidy was holding his hand. She was wearing a towel that covered her fairly well, but also left very little to the imagination. Bull could feel his face getting hot. Was it the hot spring? Embarassment? Bull couldn’t tell.

Bull simply stood there in the pool, covered in his towel, naked otherwise. Cassidy sat in front of him, covered in her towel, presumably naked otherwise. Bull could feel his hand trembling, a sensation he hadn’t felt in nearly three years. Not since the incident at his middle school. His hand jerked forward, towards Cassidy’s face. Bull’s eyes grew to the size of dinner plates, and he began to flounder in the water. He rushed to climb out of the spring, barely remembering to grab the extra towel that he had brought with him.

“Bull, wait!” Cassidy was almost pleading. Bull didn’t even slow down until he was through the door to the locker room he had come out of. Only at that moment did he begin to register the situation he was in.

“How’d you get in there, Cassidy?” Bull called through the door, reluctant to so much as look, for the fear of what he might or might not do.

Bull could hear weeping. “Like almost everything here, the hot springs are co-ed. The locker rooms aren’t, but this place is.”

Bull looked at his bare feet, the webbing turning ashen. “I’m sorry, Cassidy,” he whispered as he moved away from the door towards the locker where he had stashed his clothes.

“Bull?” Her voice drifted into the locker room. Bull winced as he heard it. He began to get dressed, near tears himself.

“Bull, please answer me!” The voice was louder this time, as if she had moved closer to the entrance of the locker room. Bull continued changing silently, trying his best to ignore his pleads.

“Bull!” The voice didn’t drift this time, nor did it echo as much as the last time she had spoken. Bull pulled his shirt over his head, and looked towards the exit, where the voice had come from. Cassidy stood there in her towel, her eyes shimmering, her face covered in streaks of water.

Bull felt his hand tremble again, and he turned his back on Cassidy, bringing his hand up towards his chest and massaging it with his other hand. “I’m sorry, Cassidy.” Bull could barely manage to speak those words, and he could tell that his voice was wavering quite badly.

Without looking back, he walked out into the hallway, and proceeded to lose himself in thought once again.

I forgot this was even here. Yep, it's been almost completely rewritten, about 5 new chapters between 2 and 3 right now. I'm wondering if I should update this at least somewhat...
