Tips for R/S Challenge organizers

60 cards? I thought it was 40 cards in the deck????
Oh - don't get me started. :D I'm starting to suspect that I'm missing a few emails - but I got a week and a half to get sorted out ;)
I get the impression there is quite a flurry of activity going on at the moment... so I just overlook these sorts of "typos". Besides I think this is more of a general TO FAQ - not just for this event.

Ooooh. Chrisbo suggested my website for the picture gallery I made. I feel so special. I will also be taking pictures for the EX Sandstorm tournament.

I think writing down what cards they get is a pretty good idea, don't want someone later on sneaking a card from their personal stash into it
If anyone finds a suspicious deck, all of the cards have ID numbers on them that should match other cards that came in a specific booster pack. So, if one ID is totally different from all the other cards, you'll know if someone has slipped one in.

Anyways, as a participant of the R/S Challenge, I have a few minor suggestions:

Post a schedule on the different rounds (ex. 1st round: GB 2nd: TCG)

Give a general time on when you think the tournament will end.

Make it known that you can have more than four of a certain card in your deck and that you cannot trade cards you get with anyone else while making your decks.

Cut on the amount of time to build a 40-card deck, and extend the time to register all of your cards. People needed more time to register their cards (unless a checklist is made) and it took about 5-10 minutes to make a deck from what I saw.

Make the link cables available to everyone so in free time, people can practice with their teams.

Make sure Nintendo (or whoever it is) sends you more than one certificate for PokemonCenter.com.

For God's sake, extend the lunch break from a half-hour to somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour. Do you know how long it takes to wait in line at McDonald's, get your food, and eat two double cheesburgers and fries? I still had one whole double cheesburger left over when the half hour was over, then my dad ate it.

Overall, from the San Diego tourny, it doesn't seem there were any major problems besides the certificate thingy and the low turn out.

EDIT: Quote tags still aren't working.

?? We got taught this in like our third year of school...
Rome isn't exactly a large part of our history either. I think the only reason it's taught is novelty. Why should we get excited about a numbering system that has no concept of zero?

It is a 40 card deck from the 6 boosters that you get when you sign up for the tournament. You also have just 4 prizes instead of the normal 6.

Yes: we made an announcement that there were 2 minutes left in the round, and that no more moves of that type could be used...

I was thinking of having a big poster board there to explane the new changes in the Nintendo TCG format. Even if everyone in the group knows them it might be nice just to have them posted. I know Chrisbo at the first of this post talked about going over with then before the tournament, but I think the poster board would be nice so players could look at them from time to time.

My question for those that have run the event, did used DCI reporter to pair up everyone, or was it done by hand?

Just wondering if the players are given GBA/Deck Reg forms? If so, by any chance would it be possible to get a scan to see what they look like? I'm just kinda intrested in seeing what they look like...

For changes in the Nintendo-TCG, I just printed up a bunch of flyers with the new rules itemized on it. Nothing fancy.

We only had 21 participants, so we just paired everybody by hand.

As far as GBA penalties we didn't have to enforce any, but if we did, it would probably be something like the other person has to KO only two pokemon to win, or the offender has to switch out the Pokemon that did the recovery move, or game loss, etc. There isn't a hard-fast guideline for this sort of thing yet, so I was basically going to deal with the situation only if it came up.

Finally, I don't have a scan of the Reg forms, but it was pretty similar to the DCI forms we've used in Pokemon tournaments of the past. The only thing is that there wasn't enough room for the cards, and the GBA portion forgot to have a line to register each Pokemon's "held item".

I personally would have given a match loss, but it might be possible to do something else as Chrisbo stated (I hadn't considered there to be any alternative). Of course, as those of you who know me know, I'm a bit heavy-handed on penalties-I tend to err on the side of severity.

To me it's very situational. I mean, I'm not going to DQ an 8-yr-old just because they pushed the wrong button. These are supposed to be REL-0.5 type events after all.

Here's a new quote for you Yoshi, "circumstances dictate severity". Almost sounds Latin, don't it? (and I don't mean "Salsa" Latin  )

Actually, from what I gathered from the document, these are FUN events. REL is non-existant in my book. This series is just designed to get people interested in the game and get them to the local leagues if they want the ins and outs. Granted the prizes are somewhat large and may determine a higher enforcement. However your quote is very pertinant. I'm not a Latin scholar (or any type of scholar for that matter), but here's a loose interpretation:

qualitas definio severitas

qualitas - a quality, property, nature, state, condition
definio - to prescribe, determine, fix, appoint, assign
severitas - seriousness, gravity, sternness, strictness, severity

Gameboy Player

Hey Chris - again - great tips. I used it as an excuse to buy a Gameboy Player ;-) PUI said they would cover the cost of a video projector unit - yeeeha! an 8 foot screen! I'm gonna round up some clips to play from the laptop also! Rock on! Anybody have some lasers I can borrow?
So we played some sample games tonite on the Gameboy player so I don't appear stoopid on Saturday. First thing I noticed was that the person playing the cube is at a disadvantage in that the other player can see what moves he selects. I decided I would rule the player using the handheld unit would have to go first so he would not have the advantage of seeing the others moves.
How did you guys handle it?

At the SD R/S, the player not playing on the GB Player was seated so his/her back was turned to the tv, so as not to be able to see the available moves...HTH :)
