Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Turning to Ash

*SLAP!*

But anyway, a couple of things:

Ash could be short for Ashley, which, believe it or not, is a masculine name as well as feminine. Or it could be short for Asher, which is a Biblical name. Or it could just be his full first name: Ash.

And I remember my dad bringing home a video promo for Pokémon where they interviewed Ash's "cousin," "aunt," and others. There was a boy who explained who TR was and all that. Hmm...

How do you know that stuff like Kids' Choice Awards are faked? I had a hunch, but do you have proof?

Just in case anyone was wondering: I'm now going with the claim that Ash/Gary was decided by some poll.

I think his mom called him Ashton in one epidode (if I remember correctly)

..and that's the promotional video I was talking about before

and I don't know, it's just an assumption..

I think the only way to settle this is to find out the dates of both the poll and the release of the promotional videos

I always thought they chose a "tree" name because he was destined to become a Master Professor and, like Oak, Elm, Ivy, and Birch, ALL Pokemon Professors have to have a tree name.

(OK, Ivy is just a parasite plant on a tree, but... whatever).

The Anglicized names of Pokemon characters often draws from mythical sources.

Mythological significance of the Ash:

The importance of the ash tree in Germanic Mythology is clear. The world ash, Yggdrasil, is central to the structure of the cosmos. The first man, Ask, ("Ash"), was formed from an ash tree found son the beach by Oðin and his brothers, the sons of Bor.(1) After Ragnarok, the race of mankind will be restored from a man and woman who are somehow sheltered within the world ash and nourished on dew.(2)

Ash's real name was red.I least i thought so. Didnt the game before it start as a manga?

Ash and RED are two totally different characters ._.

Ash: character from Toshihiro Ono's manga and the TV show
RED: character from the games and a few other manga

Wait a second, how could a poll determine what Ash's name would be and what pokemon he'd start off with? Was this an english poll? I mean, it couldn't have been...if it chose what pokemon he'd start off with, it would have had to have been before the anime was ever produced.

LOL:biggrin: AWW THAT REALY MADE ME LAUGH...
But isn't it time for ash to become a master trainer he's been training since 98'
and let him win at least 1 MAJOR tourney they could bring back all his friends/Rivals Like The Sandshrew trainer from the early episodes or.... The SAMURAI trainer(the first episode i ever saw) Metapod vs metapod again...lol!

The American poll was to determine his dub/Red/Blue name. The Japanese poll posted in CoroCoro many many years ago was to determine who his starter would be in the Anime - Pikachu or Clefairy.

AJ and the Samurai. Plus 10 Pokégeek points!

Seriously though, that would be cool, but the Samurai bugged me. Ha! I made pun of his him.

It always bothered me how Ash & Co. would always go on about someday meeting someone again that they just met. But the only people they reincounter ever are like Casey and Duplica.

I thought it was so cool to see how far Ash had come when he, the seasoned vet, actually mopped the floor with Casey when they first met. It's nice to show some character growth you know, and what better gauge than with an old acquaintance reincountered?

Yeah 10 Poke geek points, and now the bonus...

Remember when Poliwrath Froze Charizard, didn't he (poliwrath) have a P1 championship belt on? I coulda swore that Ash's Primeape Was the P1 champ, and ash left him so he would become stronger. What ever happened to him?

Primeape wasn't a P1 champ, I don't think. If I remember correctly, he was left so he could train to become a champ.

How cool would it be if Ash was strolling through th country and overhead he sees a giant, familiar sillhouette. And just like that he realizes he has met up with his old friend Pidgeot, on vacation from his usual haunt near Pallet Town.

So obviously, the name "Brock" was inspired by "rock," since he is supposed to be all about rock pokés (why must they change this?!) and "Misty" comes from "misty," which is a description water can take on, since she is all about water types.

But how did they come up with "Ash"? If anything, since he doesn't stick to any one type of pokés in particular, he should have a name that deals with electricity, right? His name is clearly leaning toward fire-types.

Sure they needed that name for the Pokémon 2000 movie's prophecy "world turn to ash," but there's no way they planned that far in advance (dub-wise, at least) to name him so skillfully.

So why did they choose "Ash" as a name? Obviously we know why Satoshi was chosen for the Japanese name, (and Shigeru for the rival), too, but Ash seems completely random.

By the way, how'd the prophecy work out in Japanese? Does the world turn to Satoshi?

Any theories on why "Ash"?
Like you said, in Japanese his name is Satoshi, named for the creator of Pokemon. "Ash" takes letters from Satoshi, sAtoSHi. Hope that helps 15 years later!!
