Vaporeon's Battle Roads road AZ 5-1 Report

So this is my first time playing in a tournament season for about 5 or so years now and I wanted to start playing again. There is no use in bragging about being good if you can't show for it right? Me and my brother came to Mesa AZ just trying to figure out what we want to do. Getting to know the area, we found a card shop named Gamer's Inn. We went in a found out they did tournaments for the Naruto CCG, a card game we both play.

Later on I found out they had a weekly league there for Pokemon. it took me about 2 weeks for find out when it was but I found it. It's a really nice group of people there. We also have the person who took 6th at worlds go to our league so I'm glad we have such skilled players around.

Anyway, the night before, I got about 3 hours of sleep because me and my brother were out all night playing in the Naruto Tournament. It lasted to about 4:30 in the morning and I had my alarm set for 7:30. When it went off, I had no idea what to do. All I heard was noise and trying to figure out what I had to do to get of so early. I remembered about Battle Road and got my act together. I took about 40 minutes fixing up my deck to make sure it ran right. Going rogue is hard. My ride came and we were on our way.

We make it there. There are 5 of us and 4 of use competing in Masters. I had to do some rushing to get some Pokemon Collectors because I had only 2 and I needed at least 3. A friend loaned me one and now that I think about it, I forgot to give it back to him, but the 4th one would have been nice. It was a pretty big event. There were 69 people there and 40 were in masters. We had to play 6 rounds so all the players that went 5-1 and 6-0 would make it and I wanted my Victory Cup card so I had my goal.

We were all briefed about the rules, lunch and door prizes then the rounds were posted. First, the awesome deck I used.

Nuketown

Pokemon

4 Voltorb
3 Electrode Prime
2 Tornadus
2 Reshiram
2 Zekrom
1 Rayquaza Deoxys Legend Top
1 Rayquaza Deoxys Legend Bottom
1 Shaymin

Trainers

4 Great Ball
3 Research Records
3 Pokemon Communication
3 Pokemon Catcher
3 Twins
3 Pokemon Collector
3 Professor Juniper
2 Flower Shop Lady

Energy

10 Fire
5 Lightning
4 Double Colorless
1 Rescue

What the deck does is get attackers out fast and start hitting hard. I like Voltorb and Tornadus as starters because Tornadus has no real draw back to attacking. The dragons are good as well but I like them as backup. You help Voltorb complete its purpose in life to become an Electrode and then blow up. With that, you move the energy to your attackers, watch your opponent go what the heck and go to town. Since Electrode gives your opponent gives the prize lead, you can Twins to get your Catchers and other cards to ruin their setup. Tornadus also helps setup other your dragons by moving energy around and also by walling Donphan. Research Records make Electrode stupid. All you do is nuke the field and attack.

Round 1
Nuketown vs Ross Deck (Troy)

I get an okay start and start with Tornadus and Voltorb and he starts with 2 Oddish's. I know how the deck works and starting with 2 Oddish is bad. I start first and I Collector for a Voltorb Reshiram and Zekrom and bench them and attach a DCE for my turn to Tornadus and end. He does collector and grabs Phanpy, Solosis and something else. I don't remember. He passes. I go and Evolve Voltorb to Electrode and play Research Record. I look at the top 4 cards and move the 3 energy there to the top and the other to the the bottom the I blow up the Electrode and move 5 energy from the power to my attackers. I then play twins and grab the other half to my RDL and an Electrode. Evolve to Electrode and play the Legend down and attach to it and attack to move a fire to RDL, taking my first prize. This was good because I denied my opponent their Twins. His turn start. He Rare Candies to Vileplume and lay down his Donphan Prime and attached a Rainbow Energy to it. He gets a slow start. Reuniclus hit the field many turns later but by that time is was too late. His donphan had damage all over his field. He also stalled with Cleffa for a few turns and layed down his SEL. He moved 1 damage counter to it to knock it out to advance something else but it I had 2 Prize Cards left and RDL his active for 2 prized cards and I win.

1-0

Round 2
Nuketown VS Reshiplosion (Michael)

The guy I was playing was a judge so I had to bring my best game. I see my first hand and get a lone Voltorb. I have a Great Ball in hand so I'm not to worried about anything. We flip and I win the flip and I'm happy. I draw into a fire energy. I play the Great Ball and it fails. No Pokemon so I become a little uneasy as I shuffle them into my deck and pass my turn. He draws and attaches a Fire energy to his active Cyndaquil and hits Voltorb for 10. I draw into another energy and pass. He attaches a fire and a Plus Power for the KO. Not really a donk but I'm calling it one.

1-1

Round 3
Nuketown VS Rogue?(Eric)

Because I lost the last round, I knew I would win this round. I get a good start. I start with Tornadus and Voltorb and have Collector in hand. He goes first and does not do much. He had Sandile active active and attaches an energy. He Sand Tombs so I can't retreat during my next turn. On my turn I draw into Twins and I had a Electrode in hand so thing were going to get fun for me. I collector for Voltorb and dragons and set them. Reshi would do more good then Zekrom so I did not grab them. I attached my DCE to Tornadus and passed. My opponent has a hard time getting going but he was preventing me from attacking with Tornadus because of Torment. I had to waste a lot of energy retreating. I also used Electrode 3 time that game because I was not getting good Electrode drops. At the end, the game was tied at 1-1 Prize Cards left. My opponent then concedes because he did not have any energy to attach.

2-1

LUNCH BREAK TILL 2:45 PM

I went to Taco Bell to get some food. Spent almost 10 bucks. My eyes were eating, lol. Most of the players were there. I heard some masters there talking about my deck and to watch out for it so I felt proud of myself for making such an awesome deck. We sit around for a bit playing a few games. I also got to play my Pidgeot Energy Control deck too so that was fun. Time ends and we get ready for round 4.

Round 4
Nuketown VS Donchamp (Tom)

I get another Voltorb start. He wins the coin flip and we both flip out active Pokemon. He has a Machop. I was like crap. I don't want to get donked again. If he had the Pluspower, I would be done for. I had the Collector in hand but it did not matter much if I did not get my turn. He attached a fighting energy to it. Everytime he played a card, my heart started racing. It seemed like his turn lasted forever. He drew his cards and I was dying, fearing the Pluspower but he just attacked for 20 due to weakness because Voltorb is weak to the attack. I felt so much better. I drew Electrode, play my collector, grabbed a Voltorb, Reshiram and Tornadus and played them each down. I attached my Energy to Reshi for the turn and ended. on his turn he evolves Machop, plays his own Collector and grabs 3 Pokemon of his own. The new fighting trio pokemon, and Machops and plays all 3. He kos my Voltorb and passes. I move up Tornadus, I draw into Twins. Things were looking up for me. I evolve into Electrode, play my Reasearch Records and look at the top 4 card. Only 1 energy. It was a DCE so it was fine. Electrode did what they do and blow up. I got 3 energy off it. Attached what I needed to Tornadus and the other to Reshi. I play Twins to search for RDL but one half was prized so I just grabbed my Catcher and Juniper. I KO his active and take a Prize. Its now 5-4.

He get's out his Machamp Prime and attaches a DCE to it. That huge 150 HP is nothing to play with. He can't do anything else so he passes. I draw and catcher up his Machamp with the DCE. I play my energy and play juniper. Within the next few turns, I KO both his Machamps leaving him with no real attackers. In the late game, I just advance my dragons and just Outrage everything for 120 before it went down and getting my last prize with my next attacker.

3-1

Round 5 (Raffle Round)
Nuketown vs Mew Box???(Bruce)

Bruce came to Battle Roads with us. he's a pretty cool guy and he plays at our League. He said he was playing Mew Box but not really. They give out the prizes, which I did not win and we go to play our game. This is my first time playing against Mew Box. I know Mew just attacks with Lost Zone Pokemon attack but never played it before so I was not sure what to really expect from it. We flip over our Pokemon and he has a mew. I start Reshiram and Voltorb. He wins the flip. He Collectors for his basic trainer lock setup, and passes the turn. He did not have an energy. I draw into collector and grab my common pokes. I don't have that great a start and do what I can. I attach an DCE to Reshi and Ourrage for 20. He starts and gets out a Plume then Judges. I hope I get good cards. I got useable cards so I can't complain, he attaches his energy and does See Off for Muk.

I look at my bench and see everything has a low retreat cost. I knew it would not be a good idea to play RDL because of it 3 energy retreat cost. I could not afford to have it stuck out there. I attach an energy and play Juniper. I get Zekrom and Tornadus so I play Tornadus down. Still no Electrode. I attached a Energy to Tornadus and Outrage for another 20. He draws and plays another Mew and attaches to it. He has other Pokes on the Bench but not things he can use. He See's Off a Crobat Prime and ends. I draw into Electrode play it and then blow it up for 5 energy and attach them. I KO with Outrage for a prize. The game went on with me blowing up 2 more Electrode. I KOed all his Mews and went through his other attackers. During late game, there was nothing more he can do to block me so I take my last prize.

4-1

Round 6
Nuketown VS Stage 1 (Don't know name)

The round has started and my opponent was not there. I wanted to win, but not because of my opponent not showing. He showed up and the judge told him if the game came down to time, I would win because he was late. 25 minutes was all be had to play because he was late. I told him I hope the game is over before then because I don't want to win like that and he said he hopes so too. I win the coin flip. I'm not going to lie when I said I had a godly start. I started Zekrom and Voltorb. I had the Electrode in hand with a Collector. I play it and grabbed what I needed for the match up. I saw the Phanpy so I did not take Zekrom and took a Voltorb and 2 Tornadus. I attached the DCE to Zekrom and Outraged for 40.

He starts and play his collector. He grabs his Yanma, Phanpy and Zorua. He attaches his energy to Phanpy to get ready for donphan and passes. I draw my card and play down my Electrode. I play Research Records and move 1 card to the bottom of the deck. I nuke and get 6 energy. 2 being a DCE. You should have seen the look on my opponents face. I put them where I wanted and KOed the yanma. This game in a nutshell was just me taking KO's every turn. Reshi 1 shot the Yanmega's and Tornadus 2 shot the Donphans. I win this game because my Pokemon are big and he can't do enough damage to take them out.

5-1

So that's it. Masters was done with their 6 rounds and after my game, I put my deck in order for the deck check getting ready for the top cut. I was getting my Victory Cup today. I could have been 6-0 if not for the 'donk' in round 2. Boy was I happy. 5 people in masters went 5-1 so I was expecting the games to be good. The pairings were posted and I DID NOT MAKE THE TOP CUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I came in 5th place!? How? I go 5-1 one and can't even play for 5th, I just don't make it after all the hard work, I'm just out? THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED. ANYONE WHO GOES 5-1 SHOULD BE IN THE TOP CUT!

I felt like crap. They took my chance to shine. I was going to win this tournament. Oh well I guess maybe next time.

Props

Friends for being so awesome
Electrode Prime
Shaymin
Going first
Trading my RH Pokemon Collector for 4 Pokemon Collectors
Going Rogue

Slops

Getting Cheated out of the Top Cut
Getting donked
Going second
Failing Great Ball
Starting with a Lone Voltorb so many times

Interesting deck, and well played for going 5-1.

Not making the cut and essentially getting NOTHING (no Championship Points) for that is outrageous. At least under the ELO system you would have got some Ratings Points. I hope this is the kind of thing Pokemon will look into fixing.

I do also feel like this is a little bit unfair.
You should get like one championship point for having more wins than losses maybe.
But good deck, and great job with it!

Good report but dont be so mad about not making top the reason you didnt make it in is because there was 5 people that was 5-1 no 6-0 so it was all up to the tie breakers and so forth. Also I can remember countless times on how I was 1 spot away from cut even for states it happened to me. So just keep playing hard and eventually you will make top cut !

I'm a little confused. If you are talking about the Gamer's Inn BR that took place in Mesa last Saturday, I went 6-0 and ended up second. There was someone on top cut with 4-2 (Rachel D with a rogue deck) so I'm really confused if you got 5-1 then it should've been you there (to be fair, she had mad high resistance because she lost to the 2 people that eventually got first and second.) Are you talking about the event on Sunday in Avondale?

Also, donks suck, but they are the reality of the game. At the game with the person who eventually went to win the Saturday BR (a fellow named Garett), he had won one, then I won one and the very last he went first (he got to choose because he lost the prior round) and he donked my Phanpy in his very first turn. I didn't get to play a single turn or even flip a coin to see if I had the chance of going first and not losing so miserably (I had a Collector in my hand.) Does it suck? Yeah. I wish it had been a more...intense match. But he won fair and square and there's little to do about that unless the rules change.

That's the way I feel. You should get something for going 5-1. It sucks because I did not get to play for my place and everyone else did.

I'm not that mad anymore. I just wish I could have played for my place.

I totally sat next to you in Round 3 and wondered what you were playing. :) Thanks so much for posting your list, and it's a shame about top cut! Hope to see you at a future Arizona event.

Don't worry, you will be seeing me. What were you playing.

Magnezone/Floatzel/Vileplume/Tornadus. It worked better on Saturday (top cut!) than it did on Sunday (3-3, ah well). I'm working on something else now... at some point I should post a report and list. :)

(I was wearing the Oshawott hat.)

Really, that was you. I'm making changes to make my deck pretty much auto win against Reshiphlosion. I'm going to keep Zekrom at 50-50 because there is no way to keep that deck from working unless you get a turn 1 Judge.

It happens, blame resistance, the evil X factor in separating five 5-1s >.>

Least it wasn't missing out on a top cut to like Nats or Worlds or something lol.

Had that be the case, I would have quit the game, lol. I do feel I should have been given something for going 5-1.
