What are Premier Challenges?
Premier Challenges are a pilot program running from April 21 to June 23. These are premier events. Players can earn championship points, used to determine who receives invitations to the world championships in Washington, DC, at these events.

Format: Double Battle, 2014 Worlds Standard Format (see 2014 VG Rules and Formats section 9 for more information).
Tournament Structure: Swiss rounds (single-game) with top cut (best of 3, single-elimination).
Best Finish Limit: 2 (If you play in more than 2 Premier Challenges, only your best 2 results out of the total number of events you played in will count for championship points).
Team List: Required. Team checks and hack checks will be performed. Players team and game cartridge must pass a team and hack check if selected for one.

The top 4 in each age division earns the championship points as long as we get enough to sanction the event. So, if there are only 3 players in a division, they all get championship points as long as there are at least 8 total players. There's a lot of free points available right now.

A heads-up, preregistration for Fairfax closes Saturday, May 17 at 10:01pm.

I just got an excellent e-mail asking about the difference between this and league and thought it may be useful for any new players here:

Q: What is the difference between league and premier challenge?
A: At Fairfax, there is both league and premier challenge:

  • For league play, you can walk in at any time. At league, players play games with others at the league and earn points for each game played. As points accumulate, you earn the promotional cards, online codes, and badges for the season. At the Fairfax league, play tends to be casual and unregulated but most players stick to Pokemon X and Pokemon Y because those are the newest games though they may have other versions with them. The Kalos cycle's awards can be seen here: https://sites.google.com/site/virginiapokemon/league/history/kalos .
  • The premier challenge is a sanctioned tournament event in which players can earn championship points. Unlike at league, players have to arrive by the registration cut-off time, players game cartridges must be following the 2014 Worlds Standard format, and players are paired against each other based on similar win-loss records during the event. The premier challenge itself is a new event series for the video game.
