Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

WEBSITE LIVE -- 3rd Annual Ugly Cup - July 11, 2010

WOW, this is majorly cool!!!

The format is so interesting... if it's in Ontario and within a reasonable distance you'll definitely catch me and some other friends from the pickering crew for sure. :D

Question in regards to this format; let's say I run Flyclops (Dusknoir/Flygon). My opponent flips an Unown G, a Trapinch, and a Duskull. I flip an Uxie and Baltoy. These were the only types of basics in my deck... so now I have removed every last basic. Unlikely yes, but what would happen!

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Darn, just saw the 3 battle road requirement - I can probably make it to 2 (Pickering/Oshawa... is pickering having one?) but hopefully there will be a 3rd somewhere close... or hopefully by then I'll have my G2 and we can just trek the path to barrie or somewhere.

Also, when are spring brs? (what month) May?

Ok, now let me get this straight (getting old here, and the grey matter isn't what it used to be). You have 2 decks of 40 cards to start with - both of which are on your decklist sheet handed in. If I'm reading this correctly, you also have 5 cards which are kept aside as an "elimination sidebar." So in total, your decklist contains 85 cards. When you go to your first match, you shuffle the elimination sidebar cards, place a die (or coin) on top of your elimination sidebar cards denoting heads or tails (heads means you intend to use deck one, tails deck two), you then show the opponent your choice on the die (or coin), and pick up the appropriate deck. You then flip over 3 of your 5 elimination sidebar cards, and both you and your opponent proceed to take out and put aside all cards from both of your decks, any of the eliminated cards. However the sidebar cards remain flipped to make sure none of the eliminated cards are played. Once the elimination cards are dealt with, play continues as per the normal rules, except only 4 prizes, and 25 minute rounds.

Next questions - can we put a specific type of basic energy in our elimination sidebar to hamstring our weakness? Does each of our elimination sidebar cards have to be a different card - for example, can we put 5 Chattot cards in our sidebar if we so desire? Of course that doesn't sound like a smart idea, but if we wanted to definitely get rid of a specific one card no matter what ... can we do it? Can everyone bring cookies so I don't feel so badly when I lose horribly?

As for when Spring BR's are going to be scheduled, I would assume it would be started right after the Unleashed Prereleases, so that would make it 3rd weekend in May to 2nd (or possibly the 3rd) weekend in June. I'm hoping we will have the opportunity to run a friday night BR again, and see how it turns out. I'm sure that will give a good opportunity for those who wish to do so to attend 3 BR's on one weekend. I doubt the 3 BR requirement will be a problem for Ontario players. It may be a bit of a challenge for those from other provinces though.

Yes on the decklist. Though the cards are clearly noted as to which deck they belong to or whether they apply to your elimination sidebar. The sidebar cards are not shuffled -- you choose the 3 elimination cards you want based on the deck you have selected and whatever knowledge you have of what your opponent might be playing. The sidebar cards remain flipped up so that judges can tell what card have been removed. As a sidenote, the penalty for playing an eliminated card, would be treated in the same way as Illegal Deck / Legal Decklist. Likely if the match has gone on for much time before this is caught its going to be a game loss.

Next questions - can we put a specific type of basic energy in our elimination sidebar to hamstring our weakness? The rules actually state no basic energy in the sidebar. Pretty much wanted to avoid having a deck knocked out by using the strategy you mention. I think based on the fact you choose the cards to be eliminated it would make absolutely no sense to have more than one card of a given type in your sidebar. But if you want more no problem.

Cookies?? I think Koo should be charged with making sure we have Cookies. New rule ... the Ugly Champ must make sure that cookies are provided at the following years event:thumb:

Ah, very good. That makes more sense about choosing the exact eliminated cards. I must have thought you didn't have total control over which cards would be eliminated. Yeah, having 5 of one particular card wouldn't make a ton of sense then would it?

Koo-kies, Koo-kies, Koo-kies! Yeah, I'll go for that! (Sorry Matt, just koodn't resist! Yeah, I know I have a Dent-ed sense of humour. No offense meant.)

Love the format idea. My 5 cards of banned wonderfulness would probably be Magikarp, Luxray GL, DCE, Poketurn, and Machamp. Maybe Power Spray instead of Machamp.

Either that or you pick 5 totally different cards because you assume that most people will have some combination of those in theirs. Reverse psychology FTW!

Steve / John / PTO from Quebec sorry don't know your name --> Offer stands!!

Owch. :frown::tongue:

Is there any way that the top cut could be made to like top 8 or anything or slightly increased? cuz with registration requirements a lot easier than last year's, and the potential of 90 players there is like a chance of maybe even undefeated players missing cut and I think that this is really bad. I know and obviously I'm not complaining and of course I appreciate that people go out of their way to make this happen but I'm just saying that for example, players from BC who have 0 battle roads and have to go to the US just to play in 3 and then on top of that fly to nationals for a second consecutive year, with a format so unique that clearly will require some practice to succeed, to be not even allowed to have 1 loss after all this makes me question my effort, not only to make sure I meet the requirements but to dedicate time to this tournament. I say this with total respect and appreciation and hope that the tournament structure could be slightly improved to IMO benefit pretty much everyone.

Many of you don't know, but Steve Ricker the PTO for British Columbia has quit Pokemon International as of today May 26, 2010. Long story short, there arent going to be any battle roads in BC. I greatly appreciate Terry's generosity by hosting this tournament and it is still possible for some of us to travel to Washington to get our battle roads in, however, it would disturb me (similar to Sebastian's thoughts) if us BC players spent our time and money on going to Washington in addition to the expensive flight + accomodations and not be able to play in Ugly Cup due to the lottery or first-come first-serve basis (whichever ends up being decided). I hope it would be possible for some spots in the Ugly Cup to be reserved for non-Ontario players as we have routinely spent the extra mile playing the game that we love so much. I understand if many of you feel my sentiment is selfish, however, I hope you can at least acknowledge the extra sacrifices us BC players have to make in order to travel to Toronto. Many of us are students yet find a way to pay for our flights and expenses for one enjoyable weekend. Crazy? definitely. But we simply want to enjoy the experience and that includes the Ugly Cup and an excellent tournament format

The structure will be either 3 or 4 pods (depending whether the master's limit is set at 30 or 60 players). Each Pod will have a T4 with the winner of the Top Cut in Each pod moving on to the Age mixed T4. In this format there is no way that you don't win the tournament if you don't lose a game.

Just by means of explanation, my BR attendance portion of the eligiblity requirments had the following purposes:

  • provide a measure of player dedication, using touraments readily available to the entire Canadian player base
  • increase attendance at Spring BRs across the country by making the tournaments mean something
  • provide a reasonable discriminator between the dedicated player and the one that simply walk's in to Nats with a net-deck to win prizes

In light of the news above this makes it more difficult as a BC player to meet the requirements so I am willing to waive the requirement for BC players only. I am updating the Pre-registration form on my website to allow me to discrimate by region where players are from. At this time I have no plans for allotment by region as I think that with pre-registration and a raised limit of 60 players everyone who wants to play should have a seat.

On the larger topic of pre-registration. I was ready to take the website live, but give me a day or so and we should be good to go. :lightning:

Thanks a lot Terry.

Terry, I completely misunderstood and it is my fault. I was under the impression that after swiss it would go straight go the mixed age top 4 cut without a top 4 cut in each age division. Now that I understand it is awesome and the structure is perfect. And thank you very much for your understanding regarding our unfortunate situation here in BC. This is greatly appreciated.

Pre-registration numbers to date:

Masters: 22 (37% of cap)
Seniors: 4 (13% of cap)
Juniors: 12 (40% of cap)

You should receive an email from me within the next couple of weeks asking for confirmation of your BR participation, once provided your registration slot will be reserved. At Nationals there will be a sign-in sheet which will confirm your registration. Unconfirmed registration will be open to a lottery to be held after the end of the Master's Swiss rounds.

Ugly Out

Hey Terry,

My friend from Montreal was talking to me about the Ugly Cup (James Neumann, 2nd place "Master" at national last year) and he said that there was only 1 Battle Road in his area because only 1 store in Montreal supports Pokemon. He really wants to participate in the ugly cup, please let him know if there's anything you can do for him? Thanks.

Hmmm, LOL, Looks to me like such a large city as Montreal needs someone to look around for venues. There's gotta be another card selling store somewhere.

Edit: Come to think of it, I have a BR coming up on Sunday. Hey, it's only about an 8 hour drive for him! It could happen! LOL.
