What do you think are the most prized Pokémon cards?

Pokemon Catcher when I need it.

Oh, wait, this thread isn't about what cards are in your prize cards most often.

Desirability vs. Rarity

...Personally my most prized card is an English Happy Birthday Pikachu. It's not particularly rare. But I won it through the WotC giveaway where only 100 (I think... It's been awhile ago) were given out. Unfortunately there's nothing about the card that sets it apart from all the other Birthday Pikachus. Yet I prize it personally as much as many would prize the No. 1 Trainer card or Prerelease Raichu. That doesn't mean that I could go to eBay and sell the Happy Birthday Pikachu for thousands of dollars. It just means that I find a lot of personal value in that card. I think that's what Nicholas3652 was saying...

That is exactly what I was saying. The Happy Birthday Pikachu (#24) is one of my top favorites. However, there were more than 100 copies given away during the WOTC mail giveaway. Anyway, Pokémon cards are usually priced in collectability and desirability. That's how any Charizard is priced higher than another card of the same rarity. Sometimes a card will be priced in rarity, but it's hard to tell if rarity is the only factor counted because usually people will want that card just because of its rarity, not exactly if they like the Pokémon or not. Like the Trainer Pokémon card, Pikachu Illustrator. I would only want that card because of its rarity, and of course, it has Pikachu on it. I don't desire Trainer cards, only for collecting or dueling purposes.

My Most prized card is this beat up Fire Energy card.. I remember it was my first ever pokemon card I had found on the ground ^_^

Nice list, I'd probably throw in Wonder Platinum too. A lot of people don't realise how much rarer it is than the Diamond or Pearl.

Good point DJ.. There are only 18 copies of the wonder platinum card in existence making it the rarest japanese card after 2002.. To compare: 96 Miracle diamonds and even more mysterious pearls exist..

To me it's a Blaine's Charizard signed by Ken Sugimori himself. I even got it framed :)

I got it when I was like 10 years old in a STS. He was there signing cards and I was the last person they allowed in line. I still have a picture of it.

I have the same card signed... definitely one of my top cards as well. I have not seen many around.. should have won that Blastoise in auction a few years back.

I tried getting it graded by PSA but they just sent me a voucher for another submission :/

I was lucky and received one back in 2011.

Signed cards are very nice, especially Sugimori! Of course I am partial to Sugimori's work.

I think the Sample set is worth mentioning. It might not make the list of "mega, ultra rare, break-the-bank, mind blown" cards, but it has just as much of a story and air of mystery to many. And the value is nothing to sneeze at.

And I see the For Position Only set being the future companion to the Sample set. I also see it having a tinge of Masaki promo feel to it as well, as the Clefable and Dugtrio are going to be the Omastar of the FPO set.

Those are no color defects, it was printed without yellow color. The border is printed seperately, that´s why it still has the yellow color.

The illustrator has appeared for (public) sale four or five times in 15 years. That is hardly once a year. Second, the illustrator goes for more money. The one or two sales of the Pre-chu that we know of sold around the 10-11k mark. The illustrator edges that out a bit with the most recent sale ending around 12-13k....not to mention it holds the highest realized price of any card at 20k. Based off of the price the illustrator commands and its popularity and desirability I would have to say it takes the over all "most prized Pokémon card" with the pre-chu in a very close second.

Just want to quickly clarify the figure for the most recent Illustrator sale, just because I'm sure it will be quoted for years to come, and I'd rather it quoted correctly. The price [including the Japanese middleman fee] was just over 15K in USD.
