My opinion is that Pokemon:TCG and Yu-Gi-Oh have different target audiences now. At first, Pokemon:TCG aimed for the same audience as the show -- the 8-12 age range. You could tell because the game was relatively simple, with just enough strategy to be interesting without being over a pre-teen's head. Now, as original players have gotten older, Pokemon:TCG has seemed to shift its focus to an older demographic, as shown by the complexity that has been added in the last 3-5 years. Yu-Gi-Oh! seems aimed at a demorgraphic like Pokemon started with, which is why I think people who like Pokemon:TCG are tending not to like Yu-Gi-Oh! It's more like what we were a long time ago than what we are now.
