What items can not be on the play table space during a match?

Ummm ..... Don't you mean 'What items canNOT be on the table ....'? I suppose there's no easy answer for that one since everyone will have a different take on it. However I would think that we wouldn't want to try to legislate personal items or step upon the rights or customs of individuals. I would hope however that the play space wouldn't become too crowded with personal items, especially such that it hinders the opponents to see one another. I would discourage use of a damage type chart, or other hints. Other than that, I would tend to vote against morally objectionable material or items and such, but be willing to overlook most other stuff if I thought there was no harm done.

EDIT: Please take my response as an answer to what can be on the table during a TPCi sponsored and sanctioned premier event. What happens at league or non-sanctioned events may be entirely different - and is of course not expressly covered by this forum.

P_A actually having a type chart on the table is not permissible in the floor rules for VG events.

The floor rules allow for personal "good luck" charms (but not too many so it crowds the table) Having like a plushie, or a figurine, I wouldn't mind, especially since I play with one on my mat.

@ P_A- fixed question, as per what that is what I meant. Thanks!

As per the topic of discussion- I don't mind what can/can not be on the table during a match being clarified. This way the discussion covers the topic both ways.

I think cell phones and any other sort of electronic devices other then the equipment needed in order to play the game should not be allowed on the table.

I do think that paper and pen/pencil should be allowed for note taking purposes.

I agree on the type chart not being something allowed on the table.

Something I've noticed with VG players is that a lot of them have no idea what can or cannot be on the table for their matches. Spring Regionals (Masters) I had everything from a guy trying to take notes on an electronic device to a wall of plushes barricading a guy from his opponent (apparently they'd only done wifi matches) to a player that brought a tray of nachos to their table.

My rule is simple. You can have a notebook or piece of paper and writing utensil, and you can have A good luck charm. If it's not one of those, tuck it under.

From the 2014 Play! Pokemon General Event Rules -- http://www.pokemon.com/us/play-pokemon/about/tournaments-rules-and-resources/

12. Materials Allowed

Players are permitted to keep materials necessary to execute game play on the playing surface, such as damage counters, Special Condition markers, reference cards for TCG matches. Type Compatibility Charts for video games are not permitted. A small number of personal trinkets or “good-luck charms” are permitted on the game play surface, but they should be neatly organized and kept out of the way of executing the game. All other items should be kept off the game play surface to reduce distraction and
confusion. Players may always request that any unnecessary materials be removed from the play area if they should become distracting or otherwise obstructive to the play of the game.

Food and drinks are not permitted on the play surface. A Tournament Organizer may allow food and/or drinks in the tournament area, but at no time should food or drinks be kept on the play surface.

---

This is pretty specific as to what's allowed and what's not. Implements for note taking are not mentioned, but are allowed in the section just previous to this one in the document.
