Why NOT to drive while tired

Last night, on my way home from New Hampshire, I tried to drive straight through... the full 16 hours back to Detroit. That didnt work, as I fell asleep at the wheel and skidded my car into a ditch/median with trees. Luckily I woke up as I started to twist and was able to hit the breaks in time before I smashed into the tree...

And the of course I needed to get my car towed out of the ditch, which cost $135 for 10 minutes of work... what a rip. I was able to drive the vehicle without a problem, which is very good. I'm still a bit shaken up whenever I veer toward the curb at all, but I'm fine.

So, I just wanted to warn everyone that if you are driving and get tired, PULL OVER! It'll save you a lot of time, money and pain. Resting for 3 hours is better than having to pay $100 or more, and waiting for 2 hours before you can start moving again.

wow.
Close call!

Consider the $100 as a cheap life lesson that may save your life in the future!
Considering the alternative, $100 is cheap.
I used to pull over all the time for a nap when I had a long commute, but there are still times I find myself slipping off.
Glad you made it back in one piece!

There's another reason not to drive while tired:

Common sense. Just trying for my license myself, so I don't have a lot of driving experience (read: nil), but it seems like that, if one was getting tired, one wouldn't keep driving.

it is common sense, yes, but when you start driving and go on a long trip, you will realize that after a while you get to that point where you just want to get to the next destination... kinda like an obsession... you push yourself.

After something like this though, you learn not to push yourself so hard and take your time.

Once you're driving and commuting and taking long trips for a while, you'll realize that it's a lot easier said than done.

Now.. I've been able to go all the way in long trips. What really kills me is when I hit traffic. It can just be a 20 minute drive, but if I get stuck in a Traffic jam I start to doze off. And its kinda hard to not get into traffic in LA.

Like `Pop said, consider it a cheap lesson in life.Words of wisdom.

Same thing happened to me one time a long time ago, except for it happened three times on a trip. The first two just veered of the road a bit but the third time I was in a ditch.Luckily,I awoke just in time so I ended up there with the back of the car down in the ditch and no damage.I just drove forward and was able to get out no problem.

The dumb things we do,huh?Just remember, you learn from life`s lessons and this was just one of them that you had to go through. It`s over now,and you are older and wiser and still alive.Enjoy life. :)
