Well with Nintendo's first set finally here, I now work to plan for the future of the PeTCG. With the new rules (partially) in mind, I started to go through my first Eighteen Boosters of cards and foreseeing the following Premeire Tournament Format.

Card Collections allowed:
Expedition* (159 cards) *exclude BECs
Aquapolis (185 cards)
Skyridge (182 cards)
EX:R&S* (103 cards)
Following Classic Promos: 50, 51, 52, 53
New Promos: 001, 002

Total card pool: 629

Basically, I followed the e-reader only cards rule for this format since Nintendo has pushed our game very close to Japan's game. Now there are alot of cards in EX that I like:

Sneasel EX (similar to original Sneasel)
Chansey EX (similar to original Chancey)
Kyorge EX (great suppliment to any Water deck)
Groudon EX (great suppliment to any Fighting deck)
Blaziken (holo)(good Energy Restoration card)
Hariyama (helps take out Opponent's EX Pokemon)
Breloom (Good in Grass/Fighting combos)
Donphan (risky but powerful)
Swallow (Heals itself very good)
Sceptile (rare)(Has Base Set's Venusaur PokePower)
Sharpedo (Good in Water/Dark combos)
Kirlia (ID-H-28-#)(Has Life Drain)
Linoone (powerful attack for only 2 colorless)
Mightyena (great back up for a Darkness type)
Carvanha (A basic Pokemon with Base Set's Machamp's Power)
Wurple (Signs of Evolution attack)
Pokeball (The return of a powerful classic (its about time!))

Now thinking about decks, I created some interesting 1 on 1 decks with these cards. Today I'll show my first All-Darkness deck:

Title: Darkness reigns
Class: Special
Pokemon: 17
4 Poochyena (EX:R&S ID G-32-#)
3 Mightyena (EX:R&S)
2 Sneasel EX (ES:R&S)
3 Houndour (AQ)
2 Houndoom (SK)
3 Murkrow (SK)
Trainers: 24
4 Professor Oak's Research (EX)
4 Forest Guardian (AQ)
4 PokeBall (EX:R&S)
4 Darkness Cube 01 (AQ)
4 Potion (EX, EX:R&S)
4 Full Heal (EX, EX:R&S)
Energy: 19
4 Darkness Energy (EX:R&S)
4 Rainbow Energy (AQ)
11 Fire Energy

So can this deck win in forecoming? Probably not, however it should be pretty to use in learning the new rules because it doesn't use any new tecniuques that get confusioning. Also decks are going to have to look a lot like the trainer structure I have in here, just because cards like Elm, Bill, and other powerful drawers and seekers won't be allowed anymore I bet.

I don't think groudon ex is good. Kyogre is not that good either, unless it is in a raindance deck. They have 120 hp which is extremely good for basics. However each only has one attack that requires 4 colored energy. You also need to discard an energy in order to use their attacks. IMO, you're very likely giving up 2 prizes if you play groudon ex.

Thanks.

You didn't read the full topic did you? I am ONLY working with decks that use Expedition, Aquapolis, Skyridge, EX:Ruby&Sapphire, and only promos with E-code on them.

Consider the EX pokemon as two pokemon ready for battle. With their HP so high they can stay in play for a long time. So its like two pokemon in a row fighting, yet you have the luxury of only using one Pokemon.

This sneasel is really just a shadow of it's former self. It takes three energy to attack instead of two, and it actually has a retreat cost. Even though tyrogue probably will be banned along with the rest of neo block, the fighting weakness will probably come into play. Besides, you can take two prizes when you ko it.

Anyway, about the deck, I think elm and bill will still be allowed because they were promo cards. The reason WOTC released the cards was in preparation for the removal of neo from modified. Nintendo will probably respect WOTC's plans and keep elm in the format.

Thank you WOTC for a wonderful pokemon journey.

since when was bill a promo? I really hope elm stays, and cleffa from neo1 is released as a best promo, cause if not, the games will become more tedious, and dependant/luck based on the next card you draw (Magic/yugioh)... we will have to wait and see, how nintendo modifies modified (get it?), there's also the possibility that nintendo realizes the balance in the current environment, and decides to not change modified, and only allow EX to be played in modified, miracles can happen you know? Without addressing specific Pokemon (I haven't seen enough of them to comment), here's my general observations.

1. There are very few Pokemon in the new sets with free retreat costs. (Unless my database is hosed, I believe only 6 in Expedtion, only 5 in Aquapolis, and not sure how many in Skyridge yet).

2. There are few Pokemon that have no weaknesses (3 in Expedition (plus 2 babies), and only the 3 babies in Aquapolis have no weakness. Again, not sure about Skyridge)

3. More Trainers are Supporters. A move I interpret as attempting to reduce the number of trainers being played.

It feels to me like Nintendo has tried to "flatten" the game to focus more on Pokemon than Trainers. This should please those who refer to this game as "Trainermon" (or whatever they call it).

I will not give You any deck suggestions, Mysterioustrainer, as I unfortunately have no informations about new Nintendo sets [Frown]
I only want to show my opinion about what D&V has written:

Can't understand this: Nintendo want to reduce the number of trainers in decks, don't they? So why have they created Pokemon so hard to play?
If a Pokemon has high retreat cost, it's obvious, that it needs (needed? Don't know whether they're still legal) Switches or other trainers helping them to retreat. If it has weakness, Potions or Moo-Moos are required in the deck (Sure- still playable).

So- I think decks will need even more trainers than before! As more and more cards become Supporters, we'll play freely than before, game will become boring... Trainers and Pokemon have always been an indissoluble integrity. Both kinds of cards helped us to win. Well, it's true that some people today play rather more Trainers that Pokemon, and we must remember, that Pokemon are (should be [Wink] ) more important, but I've written, what would happen, if trainers played less important role than they play...
