Say I have an Octillery active and my opponent has Magcargo (3 retreat) with 1 energy on it, can Magcargo retreat discarding all energy attached to it, or must it be able to pay at least its regular retreat before it is allowed to?

If the pokemon has a retreat cost, it has to be paid first before going to the bench. Then whatever energy cards that are left when it was benched it gets discarded by Octilley's pokemon power. ![[Wink]](../tcg/wink.gif)

I'm guessing that magcargo's energies would be discarded (all of them)
my reason to believe this is:
octiller is when they switch
magcargo's power (once its benched) attaches an energy to the new active
since it's energies are all discarded BEFORE benched (in the middle of it here =/) and magcargo's power happens afterwards.
So i guess this means im right
Although someone could prove me wrong as im not 100% sure.....it could be that octillery's power happens AFTER and not BEFORE so then magcargo's replacement gets the energy if that is the case....

just rember that retreating is a game action like attacking, but using a power to switch it or a trainer to do that would not be the same thing.

Ok, how about this?
AQ Octillery as Active. AQ Victreebel on bench. Fragrance Trap their Active to the bench, does Octillery remove their energies?

In response to the fragrence trap, no. The use of a Poke power "switches" or "replaces" the pokemon. This is not the same as retreating. The same would apply if I used switch, double gust, ect. The energies would be discarded only when a normal retreat occurs, not by trainer, powers ect.
