OK, previously in the game, a Pokémon can be Poisoned as well as either COnfused/Asleep/Paralyzed. But now we have the whole new "Special Conditions" thing as well as Burned.... do each Special Condition cancle each other out (ie Pokémon can ONLY be either poisoned/confused/etc)? If not, what does/doesn't Burned remove? Can a Pokémon be Poisoned, Burned, AND Confused/Asleep/Paralyzed?

Dear Confused,

As I understand, a Pokemon may be asleep, confused, or paralyzed (but never more than one of these 3), and then poisoned, burned, or both.

here's an even trickier question. Can a Pokemon be Burned and Charred at the same time? I would imagine so. I think I now have a new goal in life. My dream is to get my opponent's Pokemon to have three conditions (poison, burn, confused/asleep/paralyzed) AND char. [Eek!] [Roll Eyes] [Dubious]

A Pokemon can be Burned and Charred, so if you're lucky, you could get a Pokemon Tripple Poisoned, Burned, Charred, and Confused maybe...

question, very inporant- all powers that currently shut off due to sleep, confuse, paralise... now also shut off due to posion and burn... however some powers work when a serten status is aheved: ie rockets snorlax... and others work regaldless of status- Unown and Sabran'a Gastly are some that come to mind... SO- what happens now...?

How about this, you

Poison,
Confuse,
Char, and
Paint

your opponent's Pokemon. I think all these can be on a Poke at the same time.

Does Burn replace Poison or can you be Burned AND Poisoned?

Sabrina's Gastly would still have it's Geseous Form Pokémon Power under any Special Condition because when printed the current Special Conditions did not effect it.

Rocket's Snorlax Restless Sleep is turned off by Burn and/or Posion because the only Special Condition that allows it to work is Sleep (matter of fact it has to be Asleep in order to have the Power).

Unown D, Unown M, and Unown N all work with Burn and Posion because they still work under the [then] current Special Conditions.

As a general rule, if a Power works while the Pokémon is Paralyzed, Asleep, or Confused, it will also work if Posioned or Burned.

Actually:

Q. If a Rocket's Snorlax/Dark Primeape is Asleep/Confused (respectively), then gets poisoned, does its power still work?
A. Of course. If a Pokemon Power says it is shut off if it is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, then you also add Poisoned. If it does NOT say any of that, then Poisoning doesn't shut its power off either. (Jan 24, 2002 WotC Chat, Q15)

So basically, Burned doesn't remove a Special Condition in the same way Asleep/Confused/Paralyzed removes each other? Interesting....

Not really. It makes perfect sence when you remember that being Asleep, Confused or Pararlyzed is signified (or at least it was originally) by turning your card so that the top of the card faced to your left, towards you, or to the right, respectively. The main reason they eliminate each other is that they are rather hard to show using such a system simultaniously. I can only assume that, at the time, they were trying to avoid bringing a lot of extras (early starters cam with one coin, instruction booklet, and two kinds of counters-they would have need three other counters if each penalty had one). Since counters can represent different things (Burn, damage, Char, Lightning Rods, Paint, and Poison to my recollection), they can co-exist. You can, after all, put all those on a card (or beside it, any way [Roll Eyes] ). In terms of "psuedo-realism", that is, what if Pokemon were real etc., it wouldn't matter much if you were two at once, since 2 incapacitate all actions (Paralysis and Sleep). Poison and Burn don't actually prevent you from successfully attacking, they just injure you. Either may finish you off after a failed Confusion check or the like, but you still can attack or retreat. Otherwise, I can only assume in the card creators mind, an attack that confused you or paralyzed you should wake you up if you are asleep, while an attack that puts you to sleep would apparently remove confusion and paralysis, etc. Well, or they didn't want you to have to have to worry about all that.
On a final note, in the Gameboy game, stat penalties/bonuses don't cancel out (unless they should, such as a bonus to hitthat rests on you cancelling a to-hit penalty that rests on you), but Confuison is the "universal Special Condition" that can co-exist with Sleep (SLP)Posion (PSN), Paralysis(PAR), Frozen (FRZ), and Burned (BRN), while they prevent (not replace) each other.
