Hi I am new to the Pokemon TCG after just buying a starter base set and playing with the family. Looking through e-bay I noticed some cards with the same Pokemon have different statistics. How can you tell different versions apart and do you mix them anyway. My version has the card number followed by /102.

Welcome to the Boards!
Well, one way (but by far not the easiest) is to look at the #/# thing like you did. The easiest way to tell the difference between expansions is to look to the bottom-right of the picture of the Pokemon. The symbol shown there tells what expansion it is from.
No symbol = Base Set Flower Symbol = Jungle Fossil Symbol = Fossil Pokeball and a number 2 = Base Set 2 R = Team Rocket A swirl that remotely resembles a stadium = Gym Heroes/Challenge 2 Stars = Neo Genesis Tower = Neo Discovery Oval with three prongs = Neo Revalations Two odd-looking star-shaped things = Neo Destiny
Somebody will have to add the E-Expedition symbols
I hope this answered your question.
P.S. the /102 you mentioned is Base Set

On any card from a set after the Base Set, there will be a symbol indicating the set it comes from, either just below the bottom right-hand corner of the picture, or near the bottom right-hand corner of the card. Other than the Gym sets, which occasionally had more than one version of the same Pokemon, no set has ever had more than one card for the same Pokemon, to the best of my knowledge. Most players do a lot of mixing of sets in their decks. On these forums, most posters put which set each Pokemon in their decks comes from, to avoid that sort of confusion.
Anyway, here are some of the symbols Postdog left out:
A circular symbol resembling a Pokeball: Expedition A drop of water with a building inside: Aquapolis A mountain with a ring around the top: Skyridge [ May 31, 2003, 08:37 AM: Message edited by: dkates ]

Just to add to confusion, some Unlimited Holos from the Jungle set were released without a Logo, just like Base, but if it says it is a #/102 it is base, or #/64 is Jungle.
Also THERE have been sets with multipule versions of the same Pokemon. Almost, if not every Ecard set so far has released a few Pokemon that have 2 different cards withen the same set. [ May 31, 2003, 09:11 AM: Message edited by: Spectreon ]

dkates: Neo Genesis, Expedition, and Aquapolis (Skyridge too?) all had multiple copies of some Pokemon.
Genesis had two versions of each stage of the 3 G/S/C starters.
Expedition had 2 versions of some Basic -->Stage 2 Pokemon (2 Feraligatrs, 2 Charizards, 2 Totodiles, etc.)
I also know that Aquapolis had two versions of Growlithe, Magnemite, etc. They each had a Common and Uncommon version. I'm sure there's more I'm missing...
Other than that, to get back on topic, when two of the same Pokemon are in the same expansion, you use their Level as a guide to tell them apart. The level is located after the flavor text.
On the new E-cards, you use the ID# located beneath the picture on the card.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for that information. The pokemon that made me question this was a Machamp. I saw a different one with lower Hp, additional attacks and different attack cost for seismic toss. I guess this could have been a dark/light Machamp (I have looked into things a bit more) which I would assume can be treated as a seperate pokemon altogether.
I thought I might add that I am 34years of age and so have not been in an enviroment where I was aware of Pokemon card gaming. Of course I have heard of Pokemon and the fad that was out on the Gameboy some years ago and I have seen a few episodes of the pokemon cartoon.
The trouble and strife bought two basic sets for her sons which were on offer at the local supermarket. They asked me to read the rules for them and explain it so all four of us started playing the game and I realy enjoyed it. So I also bought a basic set for myself and one for the missus. We even play it when the kids have gone to bed and we are both in our thirties. Two days ago I bought the zap set but her indoors ended up claiming it. She liked the idea of psychic pokemon.
Its good that the hobby is well supported by everyone on this forum board. Thanks all for your help.

Welcome to a wonderful game, Orkboss. I'm 36 and got sucked in when my six-year-old son started getting interested in the cards, and we wondered what all the symbols and points and stuff were.
My wife, unfortunately, thinks it's just the "boys'" game and has avoided it as best she can; glad you can play with yours.
Now, I spend far too much money on e-bay, but my son and I have a hobby to share. He, by the way, won the ten and under trophy at our area SBZ tournament last weekend.
