I seem to remember a ruling a while back that differentiated attack damage into two categories:
1. direct attack damage (the bold amount on the right side of the attack text).
2. indirect attack effect damage (any damage specified in the attack's gametext but no amount is shown on the right side of the text).
Wasn't it ruled that anything that prevents attack effects also prevents the second kind of damage explained above? For example, does Machamp's Immunity prevent Pichu's ZZap (and also Murkrow's Feint Attack)?

Well, in answer to my own question, here's what the COMPENDIUM says:
quote: Q. Would Suicune etc. not prevent bench damage from Feint Attack? A. Suicune doesn't stop damage anyway, so it would not stop the Feint damage done. It only stops all other effects of an attack. It also does NOT prevent any self inflicted effects, only those done by your opponent. Otherwise, it stops ALL non-damage attacks [ed. note: effects] done by the defending Pokemon, period. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q173 & Q190)
Put, it appears that immunity DOES stop the placement of damage counters, right? See this ruling:
quote: Q. Since we're on a roll with the Suicune questions, would it block the placement of Damage counters, and things like Life Drain? A. Yes it would, placing damage counters is NOT the same as damage (doing damage). (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q205)

Yes it would.
SteveP: The distinction you mentioned arose out of the obsolete Suicune rulings of late 2001/early 2002. As you've noticed, they've since been reversed.

according to Japanese ADV rule... The Power of Machamp means not affected by special condition only.

Well, we're not playing by ADV rules yet. And in any event, both cards are pre-ADV, so I don't think that would apply anyway.
Yep, Pichu would damage him. As Yoshi points out, that whole Suicune mis-ruling caused a big mess. Thank the deity it was reversed.
