Politoed's PP begins "Whenever Politoed's attack damages the Defending Pokemon .... that attack does 40 more damage ...". Two questions came up recently which got me puzzling:

1) If a Politoed attacks and adds damage through its PP, will another Politoed on the bench add to that damage? (Do the PP's stack?)

2) If the active Politoed attacks while under a Special Condition (like Confuse or Poison) so that its PP is turned off, can a benched (or opponent's)Politoed use Frog Song to add 40?

I guess the answer depends upon how restrictively you interpret the reference to "Politoed" in the PP text. It appears to be a self-reference, so that would allow only the active Politoed to use Frog Song. (Notice that it didn't say "a Politoed's attack".)

Of course, if you simply read the words (and how often has THAT worked in the past?)....

1) No, the PP is self referencing, so if it isn't the one attacking, its power will not add to the damage

2) No, same reason

The Self Referencing rule has been added to recent editions of the rule book (thanks MTM!), so it helps make these things more clear. Still, I wish they templated it as "this Pokemon" in the first place to avoid confusion.

Whenever a Pokemon Attack or power names itself, replace that with "this Pokemon". Exceptions are search attacks (like Jungle Nidoran F) where you search your deck for a card named "X".

Attacks like Neo Genesis's Bellossum's flower dance that list names of Pokemon are also exempt.
