If I use paint on a Ditto, what happens exactly? I suspect that it wouldn't do anything as soon as Smeargle is benched, or maybe just right away its type would change back because I'm supposed to treat it as a copy of Smeargle.

Here's a relevant quote from the Compendium:

Q. If Ditto's type gets changed by Promo Smeargle's "Paint" attack, does this effect remain when Ditto "Transforms" into another pokemon?
A. Yes, it does. Just like doing so wouldn't remove the poison effect on Ditto, if he was poisoned. (Mar 22, 2001 WotC Chat, Q44)

As long as Ditto still has the paint marker it stays whatever color it was painted.

Aside from the now-bad analogy, the deal ditto is effectivly copying a smeargle and is therefore smeargle, then has a counter on it, so the counter sticks.
