OK - Everyoneknows about the great and powerful Darkens Energy, and its effect to increase attack by 10, but to add damage to Benched guys in a WHOLE different sotry

I'm amazed at how many people keep reccomending Strength Charm and Plus Power to add to Benched Pokemon Damage, and I must say also, most of these people are Professors. I myself have not yet become a Professor, but even I know that none of these can ever help you in this situation.

Had you READ Plus Power or Darkness Energy(the first one not the misprint in Expedition), you would see BOTH clearly state 10 more damage to the DEFENDING POKEMON.

Plus Power
Attach PlusPower to your Active Pokemon. At the End of your Turn, discard Pluspower. If this Pokemon's attack does damage to the Defending Pokemon (after applying Weakness and Resistance) the attack does 10 more damage to the Defending Pokemon.

Darkness Energy almost EXACTLY says the same thing.

Strength Charm, however, does not say this, but, before you start rejoicing, let me fill you in on ONE small detail - the rules of the game.

There is a rule that SPECIFICALLY states that the damage done to Benched Pokemon CANNOT be changed by any effect oter than the attack itself or any applicable Pokemon power. Therefore - no matter if you had Strength Charm attached or not - Benched Pokemon take no more damage than the attack specifies, and whether that be 10, 20 or the rare 30, it stays at that amount.

Thanks for your time.

...Where on earth have you been seeing that? I've never seen ANYONE, EVER recommend it for extra bench damage. And a professor (I hope) would know better. In fact, I'm pretty sure most everyone would know this... Perhaps a few links to such situations might help...?

...But yeah, thanks for bringing the plainly obvious to our attention...

Actually, there was about a four week window after Expedition was releasesd where Strength Charm was ruled to increase damage to benched Pokemon. We Dark Raichu players rejoiced greatly [Bounce] . Then the ruling was reversed, and we were sad [Frown] . But that's the way everyone plays Strength Charm now -- adds damage ONLY to the defending pokemon.

It should be noted that even WotC was taken by surprise by this "game rule" that the creators of the game neglected to ever tell them about until recently and that appears in NOT ONE rule book...

But... we know about it now and so we all follow it.

IMO, the main reason that the original ruling on Strength Charm was overturned was because Strength Charm was mis-translated. The Japanese version only targeted the Defending Pokemon.

I look at it this way. The bench is intended to be a safe haven, a sanctuary from battle, a place to prepare for battle. There always needs to be a way to attack benched Pokemon (or force them up to battle); otherwise, bench-sitting Pokemon would break the game. Thus, we have DG, GoW, and bench-targeting attacks.

Leave Strength Charm the way it should be. Let's not allow another mis-translation debacle (like Slowking) to strongly influence the metagame!

ya, I know, I totally ruined the game by bringing to light the Strength Charm misruling... I'm so sorry. -_-

Well, it's pretty obvious now.

Yes.. it was no written-in-a-rulebook ruling, more like an online one by the guys in charge of all rulings(whomever they may be) that has been addressed many times at my local league, where the Dark Raichu is appearing more and more with whoda guessed, Strength Charm. Thanks for posting!
