I was in League today when I had a notion--I had a benched Ditto and my opponent had a Active Base Set Electrode. Could I KO the Ditto and do Buzz-zap and have the double energy effect or once I KO it it's just Ditto and I have to discard it? BTW in case anybody cares I didn't do it.

I don't see why you couldn't. I mean, Ditto copies the power and all.

Your Ditto would have to be active, but if that were the case, it'd work.

I dont think so.
Once Ditto KO's itself and leaves the active position, it becomes Ditto again. The power works only when it is active, copying the defending Pokemon.
So: 1, Use Buzzap, active Ditto copying Electode is KO'ed.
2, Attach Ditto to benched Pokemon.
3, Ditto becomes Ditto, not energy. It is then discarded.

I think it would work. Because Ditto does copy the power, and although he wouldn't be the active the pokemon, and he would change back into ditto he would still carry out what it was doing. I mean the pokemon power doesn't say it has to be an electrode to turn into an energy does it?

Of course it would work. Use the self-referencing rule. "This Pokemon becomes an energy card that provides two energy of a color of your choice" or words to that effect.
It is similar to when Ditto is Transformed into Mysterious Fossil, that when it is KO'd, it does not "turn back into Ditto" and therefore give up a Prize. It follows what the card says and does not "count as a KO'd Pokemon", therefore not giving a Prize.
Same thing here. It uses Buzzap and is changed into a Double Colored Energy card.

That is pretty much what I was trying to say.
Btw John, did you win? Would doing the Ditto thing have helped?

I didn't do it mostly because of the rule confusion and better safe than step into a minefield like that. Besides I didn't need to do it to win anyway but I was curious being that it never happened to me before. And thank you all for your replies.
