what i say is....30self damage - 10 damage with 1 metal=20 self damage.
but my friend say 30self damage - 20 damage with 1 metal=10 self damage.
R.zapdos plus 1 metal energy can block 1 self damage counter but my friend say that i can block 2 self damage counter...so which is the the correct rule to it

Using pre-R&S rules:
20 per Metal! Your friend is correct.
Why? Pull out a Metal Energy card and read it carefully. Not the R&S version. One earlier than that. Notice that there are two different sentences that talk about reducing damage. One protects the Pokemon that it is attached to by reducing 10 damage from an incoming attack. But note the other sentence. The one that says if the card is attached to a non-Metal Pokemon, the damage it does is reduced by 10. Well, self-damage is still damage done by that Pokemon.
So, for self-damaging attacks, the attack is reduced by 10 (both to itself and to the opponent) since it is a non-Metal Pokemon AND the Pokemon is protected by another 10 damage.
Thats 20 total.

No! No! Read what I wrote again. Pre-R&S!
That means everything before R&S.
Once you start playing by R&S rules, this will no longer apply because they changed Metal Energy effects to only apply to Metal Pokemon.
