Hope this isn't in the wrong place. Sorry if it is.
Can I discard pokemon off my bench and play new ones form my hand or am i stuck with the 5 that are there?

Can't discard from the bench. If you play them, you're stuck with them, unless you play a card that lets you remove them (like Super Scoop Up).

One other exception is Mysterious Fossil and Clefairy Doll. You bench them like Pokemon, but you can discard them at any time. Of course, you can't use Clefairy Doll in Modified, but still.

Actually, Mysterious Fossil can be used in modified, sincde it was in Legendary Collection.
