_______________

WHY THIS POST?

I've read a few rants (mostly by young adults and teens) who have voiced a concern with the moderators being too strict. They claim that they are "piling up infractions" for "every little" reason.

I totally understand your reactions.
I, too, know what it's like to open up your PM Box and see a
"YOU HAVE RECEIVED A WARNING/INFRACTION" message.
It really grabs your attention in a not-so-good way. Doesn't it?

Well, rest assured, nobody hates you; it's much bigger than you.
That's what I'm going to try to help you understand in this thread.

I understand how someone could feel that a big deal has been made out of nothing and I know how it's easy to subscribe to a "THEM against ME" type of attitude. Hey... it's NOT like that.

Believe it or not...

The MODs have NOT gone Mad!

The FIRST thing that I have to make abundantly clear is a couple of key goals of the moderators.

These are things that we are working VERY HARD to achieve.

SITE SAFETY = We have to make this a place where small children and their parents feel safe visiting free of inappropriate topics, language, and visual content.
- This means that a parent should look over his/her 9 year old's shoulder and feel compelled to shout "WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU READING!!???"

reflect -- how many of YOUR posts would've elicited that reaction from a parent?

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT = People have to feel that it's OK to ask questions WITHOUT being ridiculed or otherwise made to feel stupid for asking.
- I came onto this site brand new to the game and had to endure some pretty bad/condescending answers to my own questions. You HAVE to remember, alot of people don't know the answers to their question; that's why they ask! If you don't want to take the time to answer an "obvious" question, skip the thread and move on to the next. PLEASE don't post a snide remark and belittle/insult the person who comes to you for counsel. Ok? :thumb:

reflect -- how many times have you used sarcasm instead of a providing a useful answer to a question? How do you think that person felt after reading your remark? Did it do any good for either of you?

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

ANY POKEGYM MEMBER can report a bad post. There's a "Report this post" icon to the left of EVERY post. If someone is posting inappropriate language, topics, or other material, you simply click that button and the mods will receive a message that a post has been reported. YOU NAME DOES NOT show up anywhere publically. In fact, noone knows that the post has been reported unless he/she receives a warning or infraction by a moderator.

This means, that all of us can have a shared interest in keeping the threads clear of profanity (direct, quoted, or indirect), topics that could be considered beyond a "G rating," and comments that are insulting or insignificant to discussion.

OK... Now that you understand what we're trying to do here... let's return to your warnings/infractions...

_______ CROSSING THE LINE ______________

WARNINGS ...

A warning is a verbal "heads-up" that you've done something that we don't allow on the message boards.

It's just an official way of documenting that you've been told "hey, you're not supposed to do that."
A warning does not lead to a ban from the site. It's just a verbal "Please don't do that" and you're done.

Alot of times the person being warned wasn't aware that they did anything wrong, so warnings are a harmless way of letting them know.

INFRACTIONS...

An infraction is more serious than a warning.
They can lead to temporary or PERMENANT bans from this site.

Infractions are given for repeat offenders and people who blatently abuse their freedom (foul language, offensive content, threatening/personal attacks on others).

The infraction system gives offenders an opportunity to get their act together before receiving a permenant ban. Multiple infractions add up 'points' that culminate toward a permenant ban from the site.

PokePop said:
Also, repeating the same offense again and again extends the time of the ban and the time that the points remain active. You get dinged for not taking the direction needed to improve and follow the rules.

So... a good way to summarize the INTENT of this system:

  • Warnings keep you informed about potentially bad things.
  • Infractions keep habitual offenders in check.
  • Multiple Infractions clense the site of bad people who do bad things.

Here are some examples of posts that may bet you a warning:
(note = they are, usually, unhelpful OR they quote things that we can't allow)

Anyone who uses that card is retarded.

How does something like that help ANYONE with ANYTHING? Please refrain rendering a useless opinion. This would get you a warning for "posting offtopic/unhelpful remarks."

The guy I played in the third round was an egotisitical butt hole.

Use euphamisms like "a big jerk" or "rude beyond belief" That language COULD be worse, but that's not the point. The point is you need to use language that won't be SHOCKING if it came out of a six year old's mouth! If a six year old says "big jerk," it would not elicit the same reaction as "butt hole." (I'm at risk for catching a warning for even posting the example!!)

Who has more than 2 Rotoms?

Polls are not allowed. I know that seems like a silly rule, but NOT allowing them avoids many problems that deal with personal information being rendered publically. (again, gotta create that kid-safe environment).

If we allow ONE poll, we have to allow them all (even the obviously fishy ones), so, we don't allow ANY.

Was reading old threads and came across this one...
DeepBurn is the new hot deck this year and is certain to make a huge impression at Worlds '07 this year.

It features LugioEX and Claydol EX and you have to run four Boost Energies.
...

This was a good deck. I wish the cards were still legal.

START A NEW THREAD if you want to talk about a topic that was posted a LONG time ago. Do NOT post a reply in a very old thread! That's called "BUMPING OLD THREADS." Bumping old threads create alot of confusion because of dated information. New visitors/players can be frustrated by the information if they are not aware that the information is very dated. Some cards in the discussion, for example, may no longer be tournament legal.

OMG!! That's the WORST advice I ever read! GMADOGXB!! I can't stand that *****.

In this example, I've put a FAKE acronym "GMADOGXB!!" Alot of CURSING is referenced in those Acromyms. We DO NOT EVER want a child walking away from a computer and asking his/her mom "What does OM_G! mean?" (<== you know there's a letter missing there right?)

Also, the system will catch many curse words and convert the text to stars (****). Some people try to get around the stars by SP LIT TING UP their WO R DS. That will get you an infraction without warning!
DOn't do it!

You can't even QUOTE someone who is referring to foul language. Please help us keep it AWAY from these boards. We know foul language and content exists in the world. We're just NOT going to have it on Pokegym... that's all.

Here's my new deck idea...

4 Sudowoodo
4 Wobefett DP
4 Carnivine DP
4 Roseanne's Research
3 BTS
2 Professor Oaks
14 Water Energy
4 fighting energy

What do y'all think?

No strategy. Ok. This happens ALOT! When you put a decklist in the DECK HELP SECTION (and NOT in the Card Strategy section please), you HAVE TO put the basic strategy of the deck or people can't really help you tighten it up. (example: Infernape can be built for discard X or it can be built for energy on the field using Typhosion and Heatran. We can't just tell you 'run Infernape' without knowing HOW you want to run Infernape!)

BAD SIGNATURES

Those are read whereever you post. SO, if you have an offensive or inappropriate signature, we HAVE TO say something to you about it. You bad sig will be seen in MULTIPLE threads. Please stop putting violent, blatently rude, or other inapproriate things in your sigs. It's REALLY NOT FUN to police up your sigs.

CONCLUSION

If you are warned or infracted for something and you do not understand the rationale behind the action: ask.

I guarantee you that after reading 100s of posts per day the LAST thing a mod wants to do is CREATE an issue with a member "for the fun of it." We have WAY too many posts to try to keep up with and scan for badnessness ( ).

Noone is picking on you. There's no time for that.
Noone is singling you out. There's no time for that.

If we've misread or made a mistake, you action CAN be reversed! I've reversed two actions just last week where I misread "foul language" that was merely ***** ... stars. I apologized for thinking it was masking and reversed everything.

We're human too!

So...

FROM NOW ON, let's SHARE INFORMATION and HELP ONE ANOTHER in the Cards Strategy section (and every other section) of this website. Make your comments count; make them constructive. If you know nothing about the topic, move on to the next rather than spamming with useless comments. If you don't like the topic, move on to the next.

Avoid being mean; focus on helping people feel better about themselves.

STAY ON TOPIC | BE KIND TO OTHERS | USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE/BEHAVIOR

God Bless.

P.S.
Pretty much, the point is, if you don't have anything nice or helpful to say; say nothing and move on.

Great post RA! Shouldn't it be stick'd, even locked?

I was wondering something though, and this seems like the best place possible to ask it, but what is the Infraction Rating system like? Can mods insert number of points, ect? And how do these points stack up to ban lengths?

Just for all those out there who want to curse and stuff, don't do it. I bypassed the censors with a swear word for the fun of it, deleted it within a minute, and I still got a 6 month ban. I hated it, cuz I luv pokegym :D

Oh, and the Bump thing is bad. I searched for forum games a while back, and found an ancient post in the RTC. I bumped it with my reply, discovered that it was old, so I deleted my post. Then some other kid comes along, and replys to the post to, so it looked like he bumped it, and he got in trouble. Watch out kids.

This list can be found in "THE RULES" page that everyone sortof avoids ever reading.. LOL

You get warnings/infractions for:

  1. references to profanity
  2. personal attacks on individuals
  3. apparently just for the sake of arguing
  4. content or links beyond a PG rating
  5. unhelpful, unkind or rude remarks
  6. the same point or request over and over
  7. polls, duplicate topics or personal requests
  8. off-topic remarks, personal business or links to other sites
  9. that your or someone else's opinion or group isn't welcome
  10. too much information about your personal life or experiences
  11. inside jokes, terms or acronyms not understood by the majority
  12. about your annoyance with this list or its enforcement

To answer your question, infractions add "points" to your account. The more points you acculate, the longer your ban. That's kindof the simple way to explain it. You get NO points for warnings; only infractions.

I'm not going to post the actual point system because I don't want people thinking "oh good. I can afford ___ more points before I'm banned"

Keep in mind, some infractions bear more points than other too! So, you could be an absolute tool and get a 1 year ban for a one-time offense!

Thanks for reading all of that!

Also, repeating the same offense again and again extends the time of the ban and the time that the points remain active. You get dinged for not taking the direction needed to improve and follow the rules.

OUTSTANDING post RA. That pretty muchly sums it up. If I could just add a couple things.

1) Even if you know the censors will catch it and it want to just let it come out as "xX *", don't do it. You'll still get warned/infracted. We don't know what you said. It could have been anything.

2) If you're even slightly uncertain about if something is allowed or not in a post, go ahead and report it! Unless we're getting 20 reported from you about childish things, we're not going to do anything. Then we'll probably PM you and ask you to stop. It's not abusing the report system if you report a post once and it turns out to be something we actually allow.

3) This is stressed when you click the report abuse button, but don't try to contact us with the report abuse feature. Only use it for reporting posts. If you want to talk to a mod, just PM one of us! We're happy to help and answer questions.

4) We DO read your reports. Before I was a mod, I was afraid to report the post because 1) I was afraid I was wrong about it not being allowed and I would get banned, and 2) I really didn't think anyone would get around to reading my report. If you report a post, the mods for that forum WILL know and they WILL read your report. If the post "disappears", we've probably taken action. If time passes and nothing has happened, then we've probably decided to allow it. No harm done!

Just my 2 cents worth. Excellent post RA, I think everyone should read your post, I think it would really cut down on the warnings and infractions we have to give out.

MODS ARE TOOO STRICT! OMG!

Anyways, perhaps it'll help ignorant people understand why they're being infracted anyways...

haha wow this is really going to help me
on here
im goign to try my hardest not to get any

These sarcastic and snide remarks are what we're trying to AVOID.

Also, I often hear, "Such and such is my friend and he knows that I was just joking." We don't want to ruin your fun or suppress your humor (believe it or not some of the Mods are very funny!) but just take it to a PM instead of posting it for everyone to read. Threads can fill up quickly with 'spam' posts which are posts that don't add anything to the topic. When there are a lot of those the true helpful information becomes hard to find.

Do you get Warnings for posting a link to a Pokemon - related site?

That is such a good question!
Alot of people probably have that very same question too!

Links off the site ARE allowed if the content is rated G AND offers something that is not here on the gym.

A link to a scan of Dialga PL #5 would be modded because it's available here on the gym.
Links to Pics of the Nats winner holding up his trophy would probably be left alone because 1) they're harmless and 2) we don't have them available in our image gallery.

Links in sigs to ebay stores are usually allowed as long as your items aren't beyond a rated G rating.

Remember, the goal IS NOT to be control freaks.
It's simply to keep ANYTHING inappropriate out of our young visitor's reach.

Pokegym cannot be a child's portal to inappropriatene materials/media.

The goal is FAMILY-SAFEocityness - ( not a real word, but it works :thumb: )

Well, I don't understand that. I didn't know that Pokegym had scans to all the cards, and I posted a link to Pokebeach scans to help someone out. I don't think that should be warned/infracted, since it's nothing inappropriate. What's the big deal if it's not Pokegym? It's still Pokemon related.

What's the big deal if it's not Pokegym? It's still Pokemon related.

Just because something is Pokemon related doesn't mean it's appropriate. A site could claim to be Pokemon related, but be something totally different. OR it could be Pokemon related, but have inappropriate adds. I know I've seen some very inappropriate adds in my day, and it's not something we want to link young children to, even if it's supposed to just be a link to something Pokemon related. Sure, some may be okay! But then of course, we're back to the "if we allow one, we have to allow them all". These rules need to be enforced if we are to try and stay appropriate AND fair.

This is my favorite thread thus far.

One question:

If said person on a forum feels a thread is going out of hand, I PM a mod?

Click on the report icon.
It's the little red triangle with an exclamation point in it under the person's avatar.
ALL mods will see that.
If you PM a mod, it will sit in their PM box until they happen to log on and check their PMs.

MODS ARE TOOO STRICT! OMG!

Anyways, perhaps it'll help ignorant people understand why they're being infracted anyways...

QFT, I once criticized someone's bad deck combination, Flygon/Hippo but with good points. Then I got an infraction, even someone else in the thread noticed I was making points, yet I got an infraction. Ridiculous.

Ia question. Let's say that I have experience with medical, accounting, and meat, and I make a topic in the RNG. Would that give me a warning? Ok let's say this that I tell everyone in the topic that I was a doctor, a CPA, and a professional cook. Would that be considered too much info about my life? Oh, i made a typo. i put in RNG up there and it's suppossed to be RTC.
