Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License

In HIS world, he's being absolutely logical. His life's experiences have not taught him otherwise.

Just look at his quote:

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Given his rationale, I'd imagine THIS is an invisible tag to his statement....

"I also treat unequals ... unequally."

That man is educated, but he's misguided.
He grew up in surroundings that reinforce a racial divide.

Yeah. I've lived in very Urban black/hispanic areas and moved to prodominately Klan populated southern rural area.
So, I have an expanded perspective and appreciation for those who are concerned with race.

My viewpoint goes like this:

I get along with Black people.
I get along with White people.
I get along with Asian people.
I get along with Hispanic People.
In fact, I'm cool with anyone who is cool with me.

BUT ...
I can't freakin' STAND Idiots though.
Unfortunately, they exist in all of the groups listed above.

Anyone who has their mind made up about a person before they've even met them is an idiot.

So, if I'm gonna discriminate, I'll just extract the idiots from our entire population and have the rest of the world to chill with.

NOTE: I'm assuming I can say "idiot" as long as it is not targeted at any one individual.

This is a dangerous topic to start though toxictaipan. Can spark some ... not-so-good dialoge.

Yeah, I know. I don't really have any plans to turn this into a debate or spark anything wild. Just thought I'd share the news. I just hope everyone else can keep their cool.

We have a lot in common, though, Rogue Archetype.

In this day and age, racist junkola like that ought to be good grounds for a lawsuit.

There is absolutely no room for stuff like this in modern America. Especially when there's a black guy in the White House.

And in the immortal words of my favorite Southerner, "That's all I have to say about that."

Funny post Dawn. Especially after what you apparently called me at states behind my back. =/

Anyway, this is pretty ridiculous but RA is right. The guy was probably raised like this so he thinks its normal and that he's doing them a favor.

sure, but when their ACTIONS based upon those 'thoughts' impact other people...like this guy's impact upon this couple...there's a problem. a big one.

Right. It even states in the article that what he's doing is illegal, anyway. The big thing here is that he doesn't have the right to take away their right to be married, regardless of race. It's not up to him to "protect" their future children.

Just a comment on RA's post -

I don't believe in discrimination.

Except on basis of practiced intellect. If you act like an idiot, expect me to treat you like one.

As for racism, it's wrong and that's that.

wanna make this clear to those who have not read it/any people who believe that it has to do with religion.

this man was part of a civil parish. meaning, this parish takes the place of what is known as counties. so it really doesnt have much to do with religion.

so what this guy did was in fact illegal because he refused to provide a public service.

I dont agree with racist people, but they have the right to say/think whatever they want.

I'm going to have to agree on this one. I think it is terrible that people are racist, but he really can have any opinion he wants.

Yes, pokemom, this DOES affect other people, but it really hurts him more... there are a LOT more people that can issue licenses... they can just go somewhere else. As a result of people going somewhere else due to his views, he will lose business.

he is a public, elected official: therefore his 'business' is to marry those who meet the LEGAL requirements of the state of LA, not to make judgements himself about who "should" and "shouldn't" be married.

hopefully he is removed from office. how many others did he turn away before this couple spoke up?

Does he actually lose money personally cos he's a racist?

Even if he did, it doesn't matter. It's no comfort to the people he discriminates against.

What he is doing is wrong, and it's kind of shocking that in the 21st century there are still places where people are brought up to think that this kind of rubbish is acceptable.

That guy sounds like my parents. They hate that I only date Mexican chicks. lol

Why is it that every generation seems more racist the older you get? BTW more power to you, I'm white (blonde hair, blue eyes even) and married a Hispanic girl. I would have never married or dated a white girl and my wife would have never married or dated a hispanic guy. I think it depends on your geographic location too... in California there are tons of interracial couples everywhere... at my church alone I see at least 10 interracial couples every sunday... and of all sorts (white / asian, white / hispanic, black / white, black / hispanic, hispanic / arabic, etc...)

Pokemom - I think it said the guy is getting kicked out, steps are being taken. Even if he's not physically ousted a guy like that would never get re-elected - said he wasn't going to even bother re-running. He's going to get sued, and I'm sure the couple he refused will win. It also said he didn't turn anyone away per se, just referred them to another judge that WOULD marry them. Which is still wrong, but jus sayin'...

Still... that people like this exist in the year 2009 is disturbing enough...

In retrospect, he probably WOULD have married them if they were cousins *zing*

People in the deep south are reared in a society that places a HEAVY emphasis on race seperation.

I can't even begin to to say how much I resent this inflammatory, derogatory, and stereotypical statement.

I grew up and have lived in "the deep south" my entire life. Are you saying that I am inherently racist? Or that I was obviously raised to be one? And we don't "rear" our children. We raise them. Rearing is what is done when tending livestock and other farm animals. I'm sure you can make plenty of other jokes here, but refrain as I am very insulted by your statement and jokes wouldn't be very appropriate.

How dare you! You should truly be ashamed! It is those types of generalized statements which lead to illogical, irreverent personal views such as racism in the first place!

there will never be an end to racism in an imperfect world. the only thing we all can do on our part is to treat others as we want to be treated. even in a world filled with judges (yes we all judge others in some way, shape or form), and then legal judges, the lawsuites we bring upon others will only put ourselves in the spotlight defending what we believe to be the truth- can you personaly sepporate yourself from judging others? it is not our fault that we inherit racism, it is our fault on how we control it.

Waynegg - I agree with what you're saying. If the south was as backwards as the stereotypical image goes, people wouldn't be raising an uproar in the first place... it wouldn't even be an issue. By the same token, Californians are stereotyped too (hippies, druggies... etc...) and New Yorkers (pushy, Italian...) Funny how in misunderstanding and generalizing each other we can dehumanize each other...
