The thread of music (updated 7/14/10)

and remember: every time you write parallel fifths, bach kills a kitten ;)

'mom

*shudder* If you said that in our music class...all the English kids would suddenly shout "German Sixths!" and I would throw a scrunched up ball of paper at one of them...*shudder*

Y'know, our music class alone has probably killed the world's population of kittens via Bach. Twice.

I quite liked the first piece, however it's not the sort of piece which you walk away from saying "I remember that". There's no real centerpiece to it. While it is without a doubt a nice piece, I'm not sure the majority of people will take a part of the concoction when they stop listening.

I hate Bach and all his stupid counterpoint rules which no professional composer bothers with for the most part. I happen to LIKE parallel 5ths. (not in everything, but they do have their uses)

That piece in particular is actually a little different from my usual style. I usually have a very strong and clear melody line in most of my songs. I was just trying something different with that one, and the effect it gives is what I was aiming for. It's not supposed to be overly memorable, but more a wondrous blending of harmony that last for only a short time, and then fades. My second one is far more memorable, and more of my usual style.

ROFL!!!!!

because the VERY FIRST thing that comes to mind the SECOND the piece started was

"IN A WORLD..."

ahahahahaaha

"and they call him... "

ahhahahahahaa

You should name this "Birth of a New Hero" or something because I'm STILL waiting for the voice over man.

This one was fun :)

You have a great ear for melody and countermelody.

DO NOT get rid of any of these early compositions! You'll come back to these later and they'll be fantastic sketches for masterworks!

The first one is a diamond in the rough.

The second one is videogame ready as an intro right now!

Keep it up man.

For whatever reason, the first one kinda reminds me of the coda section of Matchbox 20's "You Won't Be Mine". Possibly an intro to a slower song on Metallica's "S&M" live album with the San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra or Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I kept waiting for some kind of percussion to enter at some point. It makes a nice intro piece, but I'd try and find some kind of hook that you can return to. Some kind of base that you can work off of. Work this into a longer piece, 10 minutes or something like that, and it'll work pretty well.

The second one sounds like it could be the intro to a Zelda-style game, or possibly a base theme for an epic movie similar in musical style to Star Wars. If you're going for the video game theme, I'd cut down on the intro flute and lengthen the string and base section. Again, some percussion would be nice here, especially after the string and base come in for the second part.

Hold on to these and come back to them in about a decade. They could both be masterpieces of audio/visual integration in the correct setting and with the right editing and sound mix.

This is a concept version of a song I'm working on. The quality is probably a little low, the last few chords sound crappy, and it's definitely out of time, so it's a bit rough. But that's why it's called a concept version, lol.

This bit is written for the end of the song. I'm planning on making the intro similar and making the middle a little more involved, probably with a rhythm section. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

Sorry that I haven't responded to this yet. I saw the thread a few days ago, but was too busy to listen to it and give a decent response. I'll try to really listen to it after I get back from Theory. (summer classes ftl blehhh)

Oh, also, this would be helpful to me... what level of music education have you received? If you've taken theory, up to what level did you have it? Have you ever taken composition classes? etc...

@Samuel: Thanks :)

@DP: Haha, np.

I go to a specialist music high school where about half of the day is music, normally about an hour of lessons and 3 hours of practice timetabled per day, plus chamber music. I was meant to do my ABRSM Grade 8 Theory about a year ago, but I never got around to it. I've been composing since I was about 9 and I've been having composition lessons for two years.

I might post some of my light orchestral music on here when I have the chance. Thanks for the kind words guys :)

edit: oh yeah, and the gliisandi (slides) sound strange on the synthesiser and it sounds like there's a pizzicato note (plucked note) at the end of all of them. Ignore the pizzicati, they aren't meant to be there.

Ok, I have time to give a quick opinion.

The second one is far better than your first one. If you want to write atonal music, it can NOT sound forced, which yours does IMO. While I haven't studied atonal music yet, I do have a good feel for what it should sound like. To me at least, it needs to be seamlessly flowing and moving so effortlessly that it almost sounds random, but it's apparent that great care was put into it.

As for the second one, very impressive... You seem to have a much better feel for traditional classical than I do. I tend to write more in a romantic/hollywood style. Very nice job.

BTW, what program did you use for this? Is it Finale using the Garritan sounds?

Yeah, I've only really written a couple of atonal pieces, my main focus is neo-classical/romantic and light orchestral stuff. I agree that the fugue is a bit clunky at the moment, it's something I'm trying to fix. I can't understand how composers like Webern could do this stuff so well :p

Thanks, that's really more my kind of thing.

I used Sibelius 6 (Full Edition) and the pre-installed Sibelius Player sounds. I like Finale but I find that Sibelius is just quicker for notation. I take it you're a Finale user?

I'll probably upload some more of my stuff later on.

Ahh, this explains why some of your sounds were a little odd sounding to me. It sounds close to the Finale ones, but some of them are a little different, but I couldn't tell if it was just the mix.

And yes, I use Finale.

Just a FYI, Finale has FAR better playback than Sibelius.

Mods, could you please merge this thread with my original music thread? I think it would probably best to have all these things under 1 thread than start to have a whole bunch of different ones floating around.

Haha, every tells me I should switch to Finale XD I probably will if I can raise the funds.

Yeah, it'd be great if the mods could do that. I would've just posted on your thread but I didn't know if you wanted anyone else's music on there.

edit: Thanks mods :)

My Chamber Symphony (I've called it a Tone Poem on there cos that's sort of what it is) is now uploaded!

edit: btw, it's quite quiet, a little distorted and the balance is way off so the oboe sounds too loud in the full orchestra sections
Sounds pretty good. I liked it. You just need to get the volume up a bit and fix those balance issues like you said.

By the way, what'd you think of mine? DarthPika though it was a little boring, but I don't think so.
