Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2011 Season information

Probably won't get an invite now since I am rarely able to attend some events. I can only attend like 1 BR, 1 Cities, 1 States etc. etc.

Can't believe no one asked this yet but....

Do invites by championship points come with trips?? If not, there's no point in me attending the small events like BRs and CCs as I can't afford a Hawaii vacation.

P.S. This thread was difficult to find.

Wow.

Quite a change. Honestly, I hate it. The points are spread so unfairly among the events. It is better than what we had with incentive to drop, but I just wish we'd kept what we had, except no penalty for losing.

Also, is Nats open or closed? I looked through the thread and really couldn't find a clear answer.

I'm sorry for the nob question, but how can I locate a VGC tournament near me (St. Louis MO). The tournament locater thingy keeps returning 0 results. I assume that I understood correctly when I read that the VGC stops would be at the same location as the TCG stops, but the next day.

This is a LOT better than what we had. No, it isn't perfect, but it is a lot better. Let me just kinda walk everyone through my thoughts on the matter.

Championship Points are great, and what a lot of us were asking for. You are now rewarded for how well you do at events, rather than rewarded for not losing at all at events. You are now rewarded, rather than penalized, for playing at lots of events too, and the kinda soft cap we have on the amount of events that count is great too. Sure, maybe you've got your 8 BR top cuts, but you'll still play in more, because maybe you could get another 1st place to replace that 3rd place or something, which is simply great for the game.

However, I do agree with people that BRs and Cities have too many points, or at least too many in comparison to the larger events. I think they should have enough points to matter, but not so many that they make the bigger events less important. It's a difficult balance to find, but they certainly haven't managed that balance here. Truly, I think they simply need to raise the amount of points you gain from States and Regionals (as well as Nations/Worlds). This is something they could still do this year as well, as long as they implement those changes before we hit those tournaments. Here's hoping they do that, given our feedback. They could also, I suppose, lower the amount of BRS/Cities that count, but I don't like that as much as simply giving more points for the bigger events.

On Play! Points, I think the system sounds good. I'm interested to see what the rewards will be, and if any other perks will be awarded as well. I must say though, making Player of the Year based on Play! Points rather than Championship Points seems like a bad idea to me. Player of the Year should be about the best player, not the player who plays the most. I suppose that's an entirely subjective thought, though.

And on prize support. . . well, I'm disappointed, to say the least. We keep getting less and less prizes. P!P is doing a lot of wonderful things for the game, but ALL of this could potentially be undermined by poor prize support. No scholarships for Regionals is a terrible idea. If they do that, what they need to do is maybe give top 4 travel rewards rather than top 2, or maybe give more booster packs, or maybe small cash prizes or SOMETHING, anything, but simply removing a prize and not giving anything really in return is terrible. Prize support is just getting worse and worse, and this needs to change, and soon.

Someone please post where they got the idea that there was no more regionals scholarships....been looking but I can find no such information

I saw the news on the official site and thought it was great.

TPCi listened to all of you and instituted many changes you asked for.

Players no longer have an incentive to play a few rounds and drop, that isn't going to gain points. Now points go to the folks that go the farthest in each tournament. Players are being rewarded for playing all rounds, no one is being punished for playing all rounds any longer.

Dave has already said that the system put in place is transitional, knows it isn't perfect, and future adjustments will undoubtedly be made to bring greater balance and point appropriateness to the system.

Admittedly I don't play, I only judge tourneys close enough to my home that I am invited to judge, but I am excited to see the positive outcomes that this and subsequent related changes bring to the game.

Fewer prizes or more events? You can't have both. Which one would you pick? I'll take more events.
But we aren't getting significantly more events. We still have roughly the same amount of Regionals (to my understanding), just split so half are at one time and half at another.

There are way more VGC events, of course, but removing our prize support and putting that money to the VGC, which many of us don't even play or can't because the TCG has priority, seems unfair to us.

The site won't be ready to sanction VG events until the end of this month, so there's nothing in the system yet. Early next week I'll add a link on the VG Regional page that points to the TCG Regional locator, with text indicating that the VG events are in the same location on the following day. This text will stay up until the VG events are sanctioned and we can create the appropriate locator.

The VG events will use the Modified format, which can be found in the new Tournament Rules document that will be posted in the next few days. I could tell you what it is now, but what's the fun in that?

With all due respect, I realize how it could look unfair to those of you who only play TCG, but to those of us who only play VGC, we've been looking at you guys for years now, wishing we had half the support you've enjoyed.

[edit]
Thanks, as always, Mike. :)

To be clear, exactly $0.00 was reallocated from the TCG budget for the VG events.
