Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2011 Season information

I do wish Moody was not allowed this year, but we'll see how that turns out. D:

The Dark Void ban is a gift from Arceus himself.

The player display for Championship Points should launch near the end of the month. While we would like to have had this active and ready for Battle Roads, it just didn't happen. Once it's up, you'll most certainly be able to review what you've won, and where and report any errors you find.

We will be compiling the display data from the event reports we've already received, so we don't anticipate a lot of corrections needing to be made.

Thanks,
Prof. Dav

Are you able to tell us, will there be a ranking system for the championship points?

I am surprised VGC rules are up early for once...shame there's nothing likely gonna be nearby (hint hint would be nice if AZ could hold a Regional again, it has been done in the past, make Cali and Colorado and such come here instead of us having to go there every time hint). Back to another year of TCG play otherwise.

And so many people disappointed (or angry!) that P!P removed scholarships....

15 Regionals last year, with 2 recipients per age division. 15 * 3 * 2 = a total of 90 people in the entire program who benefitted from that, worth $112,500.

Given you wanted to add another Regionals to the calendar for other important reasons, what would you have done:
a) doubled the budget, so $225,000 total because you have twice as many Regionals now
b) halved the awards, so 1st place only gets $750 now and 2nd place gets $500
c) eliminate them altogether and use the money differently

Maybe (c) was the best option for right now.
(not sour grapes either....I'm speaking as a parent whose child did win scholarship money last season)

Your logic is faulty. Just because they are running 2 sets of regionals doesn't mean that the areas that normally had one will get 2. It only means that some will be run in one time of the year and the rest will be run at another. It only gives more opportunity to have larger regionals, not MORE regionals. Why aren't they keeping the prize support the same? They'll still have the same "90" winners as they had last year - but with more total attendance. If I weren't retired I know what I would think (right or wrong .... I have no idea. However .... I'd think ....), that this is only a ploy to get more attendance for less money, and that the bean counters would be able to see that they increased their holdings - even though it is an artificial increase. Hey don't get me wrong - larger attendance is great for the most part. Usually it equates to more fun (on the whole). However I don't see where the players should be penalized for having greater attendance.

Overall this is a good starting point to tweak the point system. Is it perfect? MMmmm, no. It's still somewhat unfair for certain geographies. It would be slightly more fair if all PTO's were allowed to run as many events as they feel they personally are capable of running during a set time limit, but that isn't the case. Let's face it, a person can't be in two places at one time, so only so many events can be run in a day by one PTO. Yet some are allowed to have 2, or 3 events in a day if they have the staff to run them. BR's and CC's may have much larger attendance now, so it may be harder to schedule and run more than one per day PERSONALLY. Certain PTO's are allowed more leaway and events than others, due to their relative experience perhaps, or amount of players in the area, more available staff, or maybe because they formerly ran a Nationals (favoritism?) ... who knows? Any number of reasons exist to allow less events to certain areas. Sure, this will add to attendance at existing BR's, CC's, SPT's, and Regionals, but will this generate MORE EVENTS? Doubtful. Will it reward those who go to more events? No. It only rewards those who do well at more events - in effect those who are good enough to top cut or win at more events, being consistent. But will it make a better experience for the players? I would have to say yes. If judging standards stay as high or higher than those of last year, those who can make it to many events will find a much better experience with the greater attendance, gaining many more new friends. Overall this is a good place to start .... but not quite far enough in my opinion. Even this overhaul needs a bit of an overhaul. It's a good thing TPCi has stipulated that they will be reviewing things as they go. Keep giving feedback everyone.

edit: As for BR's being more important now .... perhaps TPCi listened to the PTO's and made them worthwhile to go to, don't you think? Perhaps that might help out the PTO's more, and make them more worth their while to run.

To be perfectly clear..

Players may use Pokémon with Hidden Abilities that have been officially released via Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, the Pokémon Global Link, or an official event or promotion.

This states any Pokemon with a Hidden Ability officially released is legal, which would still include those currently only released in other markets. Is that correct?

BTW - there is VGC discussion in the electronic games forum as well:

I would hope so. Speed boost Blaziken anybody?

Has it been decided whether the VGC tournaments will have team preview on?

It was quite the outcry for preview to be on last year. According to Mr. Liesik, the live event system is quite robust and can have many different rules in place, including team preview to be on, off, or event display for a set amount of time.
Actually, the live event functionality is pretty darn robust on the backend. There are all sorts of flags that we can turn on and off, including team preview. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of it. Not saying it will definitely be used, but I do have the option.

I'm curious as to why Zoroark (and Zorua for that matter) remain legal. Zoroark's an event Pokemon by extension because it requires either a Crown Beast or fateful encounter Celebi to be obtained (there's also the recent Snarl Zoroark, of course).

Typically species or formes of species are not allowed when an event is required to obtain the Pokemon. Phione is banned due to the requirement of Manaphy and Rotom's formes were unusable prior to HGSS when the Secret Key was still a requirement to change its forme. So I can't help but wonder what makes Zoroark immune.

I'm going to guess the fact that it can breed and can be gotten off the GTS since it is possible to see a Zorua and Zoroark in game. That and the fact that it's not a "true event" Pokemon.

I've been overlooking that, great point. With Phione, as far as I know, that's not possible. That and it has a (debatable) in-universe legendary status.

Question for LIESIK:

When the Championship Point display goes online, will it be in a ranking format the way ELO was? Ideally, it would be nice to see a ranking breakdown that showed Championship Points and then ELO side by side, breaking all of the C.P. ties via the ELO, since this is the way the announcement said that ELO will work now. Speaking on the behalf of all of my friends who play competitively, it is very important to know where one stands in terms of ranking when it comes to making plans to attend larger events, or booking flights/hotels for Worlds.

For competitive players, a clear and accurate ranking is not a luxury or a fun bonus to browse, it is an incredibly necessary tool. Even a player's deck choice for an event can often be determined by where he/she stands in the rankings. If I know I only need a point or 2 to stay in the mix, I may choose a deck with decent match-ups and no auto-losses. If I know I need to take 10 points from an event, I may choose a deck with more raw power and take my chances on dodging my auto-loss.

If the current plan is to go with a system that displays Championship Points but does not show a Championship Point-based ranking (not saying that it is, just making a preemptive point), I would encourage those in charge to reconsider.

@ M Liesik: If Soul Dew does become available in B/W, will that item be banned, or will the Lati twins be banned? Or is this too soon too ask?

Question for LIESIK:

When the Championship Point display goes online...

This is more of a question for Dave. I know he's not competely done with the FAQ stuff, and we're still rolling out functionality on the site. For now, I'd say hold tight. You'll definitely have a much clearer picture of how things work in the coming weeks.

We'll cross that bridge if/when we get there.

I was unaware that Soul Dew was available in BW without the use of an external device. If I've overlooked something, please let me know so that I can adjust accordingly.
Yeah, that was my mistake, the VGCs are going to be awesome this year!
