^But, with fewer chances at States and Reg's....that should make numbers higher at BRs and CCs, giving you an extra rd or 2 to play and collect points.

omg not again....

THE Premier Event of the year! Only players who receive invitations via their National Championships, Premier Rating, or performance at the 2007 World Championships are permitted to play in this event. Additionally, top-ranked players in the Last Chance Qualifier will receive an invitation to participate in the 2008 World Championships

thats right, no invites for regionals only the top impossible at nats for the united states + ranking invites next year... gg regionals

This season looks WAY worse than last season.

Last season people have 4 state oppurtunities, 2 regional oppurtunities. This year those are cut in half.
States are only on Saturdays.
What about people who work on Saturdays? :frown: Not everybody gets to have a 9-5 Monday-Friday job like those PUI guys do.
This "cut the number of premiere events to simulate 'one and done' thing has gone too far." Maybe they had another reason to do this.

Concerns about the new season

I know it hasnt been officially announced yet but from reading the world championships section of the new season overview, its pretty obvious that the US is going to get screwed again for invites. Top 1 at regionals would have been a great solution to the problem, but it seems that we're just going to get top ? at nats maybe 4 again? hopefully 8 at least for the huge numbers that are likely to show next season.
There are more than 15 players in the united states that could walk away with worlds on any given day, it just doesnt seem right to make it so close to impossible to make it through to "THE Premier Event of the year!"

It sticks out to me that that the ONLY way to get to worlds is through nats, rankings(lol), or top4 last year worlds

The change in regionals rankings this year seems like it would be for the batter at first, until you read that its only possible to play in ONE regional this year, and that regional yields ZERO worlds invites. I could totally see limiting everyone to one invite giving regional as to give everyone a chance to win. Limiting everyone one to ONE regional where the only thing on the line is points(and probably scholarship money) is a joke, If you have a single bad day at states, regionals, or nats, and by bad i mean not getting like, top2, you're pretty much out of any shot for rankings on the season. It looks to me like everything is going to come down to nats again this year. The only dramatic change to the system it seems is the lower K value Battleroads, which is a far cry short of the overhaul we needed from last year.

I hope that when the specifc details are announced, that it will clear up some of these issues. From the first announcement, it seems we took took a step back when the game needed a step forward

Yes, Americans are entitled to everything. And the only reason people play Pokemon TCG is to get a chance to be invited to Worlds.

this means i can attand two states and one regs?
looks like fl will be hard pressed to take over every state surrouding us this year...

Amen.

Although, I gotta say I am pleased POP has at least realized some of the flaws from last year. Maybe this time I can actually have a chance at an invite instead of having to compete with people who go to 12 BRs.

Its different to last year but not so very different for anyone to be saying its worse. There is still much to be announced to do with the invite structure. Which makes it too early to pronounce judgement. I thought that the rumour mill had settled upon the 2008 Florida worlds being double the size of 2007:Hawaii, which has to mean more invites.

Reducing the number of events should give the Canadians and Mexicans more chance to compete with the bulk of the USA.

The scheduling of European events is much less restrictive so I expect that lots of travelling to adjacent countries events will be the correct strategy this year.

It looks like its still the case that a couple of losses late season can ruin a whole season.

Finishing Fourth at a regional or STP could be a very bad thing.

It appears that the system has tipped a bit further away from trying to determine skill based ratings. The emphasis on reward for winning matches appears to have increased.

I disagree with F_S that Regionals are now the most important event of the year. He needs to elaboarate because I can't see it.

With fewer events to attend, people are probably going to come up with more secret / "come-out-of-nowhere" decks so they can take the few tournaments by surprise. At least, that might be the smart thing to do, IMO. :p

And since when has people been known for doing the smart thing to do ? honestly, many decks are basically spoonfed, and yet people feel the need to come to a forum to "brag" about their crazy combo idea that noone has ever come across... Very few decks actually have a totally new idea, and it is so good that it is just a matter of days befoere the whole world knows about it, so in general I dont forsee a reduction on decks posted, or an increase on secret decks, though I do believe, just like you, that doing so would be the smartest thing to do.

A few reasons, which I will not explain in-depth because I am busy elsewhere in cyber-world:

1. Because of the Nationals structure, anyone who gains enough points to get themselves in-line for a Worlds Invite will win one in the event anyway, or already be on the top of the ratings heap.

I'm speaking generally here. There might be 1 or 2 exceptions, but they are very minor if ~20 Rating Invites are given out.

2. A K=8 for all Battle Roads makes them completely irrelevent once Regionals are over. It will not be possible for someone to go undefeated at a couple and gain 150 points like they did last year.

And those people unable to go to 5+ of these events stand no chance of making up much ground.

3. Everyone is restricted to 1 and only 1 Regional. If you mess up, that's game.

THEREFORE:

Regionals are the last events in the season that will have a major inpact on ratings. This fact alone is enough to greatly increase their importance to the coming season.

Go 3-3 at Regionals? There's always next year.

Go 6-0 at Regionals? Drop and take your trip to Worlds.

F_S: Okay, I understand why you made the statement: It all depends upon the assumptions that you make about the invite structure. I'm trying not to assume too much right now, hence my inability to see US Regionals as the most important events in terms of determining who goes to worlds. We both agree that regionals are likely to be more influential this year than last.

I wish they'd cut the amount of PreRelease dates instead. My local PreReleases are always on the last available day. The Mysterious Treasures Prerelease, was AFTER the set was released officially. It wasn't nice of them to mess things up for many people and reduce the tournaments that actually matter.
