I wasn't gonna make a report because I was pretty upset at the way I played this Worlds, but I've done reports of all the major tournaments I played in, so I figure whatever, I'll just write one, even if no one reads it XD
We flew out with a group of nine people, for a trip of 24 hours. We play games on the plane, and I lose just about everything I play with LBS. David (2nd place 11-14) keeps telling me to play Flariados and he might've been right ^^
So blahbah we get there on Wednesday, and I hate jetlags =( Hawaii is gonna be horrible next year, especially since you can't really go a week early cos it costs you like, 1500 bucks? So anyway, Thursday we go to Disneyland which was fun XD I playtest a bit, but I'm just not really feeling like playing a lot. I can NEVER play too much Pokemon, usually I'm always the last one playing at league, wherever, but these days I just wasn't up for it. I was about 99% sure I was gonna play LBS, but I don't like testing it. I like playing Flariados loads more, but I figure LBS has better odds than Flariados, so I just go with LBS. I practise against 9 and 12-year olds, which is fun, but not really good practise at times.
So yeah, the tournament starts at Saturday, and I'm incredibly nervous. I don't eat anything at all til lunch break, which is probably part of what did me in. I sit down for my first round, and try to focus on the game, which wasn't easy. My list was:
3 Jirachi HL
2 Pidgey
1 Pidgeotto
2 Pidgeot
2 Squirtle
2 Wartortle
2 Blastoise EX
1 Onix
1 Steelix EX
2 Lugia EX
1 Latias *
1 Mew EX
3 Holon's Castform
2 Holon's Magneton
1 Holon's Magnemite
--
26 Pokemon
3 Holon Transceiver
2 Holon Mentor
1 Holon Scientist
2 Rocket's Admin
2 Pokemon Retriever
2 Switch
1 Warp Point
3 PETM
3 Rare Candy
2 Steven's Advice
2 Power Tree
1 Island Cave
2 Giant Stump

Round 1 v Maria Garcia (MX) with Queendom
I'm fairly confident about my Queendom match-up, so I wasn't too worried when I saw her opening, which was Nidoran active and Pidgey benched. I start with Jirachi and Mentor, so I get a solid set-up. By turn 3 I have my Steelix set-up, so I mudslide her Pidgeot. She only has a Nidoqueen in play, and 1 Nidoran and 1 Pidgey. She can't knock out the Steelix, so I mudslide the Nidoran. She KOs the Steelix, I bring up Lugia and KO the Nidoqueen. From there on she has nothing, so I Elemental Blast her last basics FTW. Sorry, you were great to play against! I later talk to other Mexican players who say she just moved up into 15+, that's hard :/
1-0
Round 2 v Richard Olsen (US) with LBS
I love playing LBS mirrors XD They're like chess, every move counts. I played against him last year as well, which was cool. I get a fairly good setup, I think with Jirachi/Transceiver in my opening hand. Turn 4/5 I'm ready to Mudslide his Pidgeot. I have a bench of Blastoise, Pidgeot, Pidgey (in case he'd get a Steelix, you need 2 Pidgey in the mirror), and Steelix. He'd discarded an Onix for a mentor earlier, so I was confident he couldn't get a Steelix out quickly. So I put up Steelix, mudslide Pidgeot. He responds by KOing my Steelix with Latias, I think? Details are a bit foggy. I put up Pidgeot, have the Latias * in my hand. I Quick Search going PLEASE let it be here... yes, POW. I POW up his Blastoise, KO with Latias. I'm afraid he still has an answer to this. He puts up Ditto (colourless) which he Mentor'd for earlier. I'm like DITTO, what does that DO? After the game he tells me it's to get an Onix back mid-game, which is pretty cool, I guess. I think he played Dark Hypno as well. I don't like too TECH LBS too much, cos it takes away from its power and consistancy, which I think this game showed. He gets a second Pidgeot, but soon after conceded after quick searching and realising he can't win anymore. GG!!
2-0
Round 3 v Jason Klaczynski (US) with Mewtric
I'm like GREAT, I'm 2-0 and already playing him. Fun :/ He's cool, we talk a bit, shuffle, set-up, and I draw my opening hand. Jirachi, Jirachi, Holon's Castform, Warp Point, Wartortle, Island Cave. He goes first, opens with 2 Electrikes. Usually my games against Mewtric are 50/50 with Jirachi/Mentor starts, so I'm really hoping I'll draw into a Mentor soon. He plays 3 Dual Balls, getting 4 heads (I think) and passes - no energies. I draw, another Wartortle. Joy. I pass. He draws, lightning energies. PETM for Manectric, Recharge. I draw, Squirtle. Oh wow. I put it down, and play my Warp Point to put him back a turn, switch for my other Jirachi. Pass. He draws...Switch. ARGH. From there on it's pretty much over. He keeps Disconnecting of course, and I proceed to draw into useless crap. I do get 2 Wartortle out at one point, and then a Blastoise. I can knock out 1 Manectric, but he has a second one ready, and knocks me out. So he wins fairly easy. I'm pretty disappointed, cos I know with better draw I might've had the chance to make this into a REAL game, but I suppose that's Pokemon :/
2-1
Round 4 v Jimmy Ballard (US) with Eeveelutions
I figured he'd be running Eeveelutions, and he did. I was still disappointed about the last round, and for some reason couldn't put it out of my head. I don't get a really good set-up, and he gets the T2 Pidgeot. I get a Pidgeot through Jirachi and he goes Espeon EX, Devo-flash Pidgeot, Vaporeon EX, shuffle. UGH. I manage to come back from that and KO his Vaporeon. He plays a Jolteon EX, but it has no energies. I Admin him for 4, and put my Blastoise active to KO something, not sure what... He goes PETM, Surprise Time Machine to put Jolteon back into the deck, Surprise Machine to get Jolteon on the Eevee with 2 energies, KO Blastoise. All from a 4-hand Admin. I should've seen that coming really, but I'm just not playing with all I've got, still thinking about the last round. He ends up winning on time with 2-4 I think, but he would've won anyway. Twas a good game anyways.
2-2
Now I'm even more disappointed with myself. I don't mind losing, especially not to good players, but I'm just not playing my best, and I'm hating myself for it. Why can't I just focus 100% on the games and forget everything else? My morale is completely gone. I'm thinking about dropping, but then what would I do for the rest of the day but feel sorry for myself? So I play on.
Round 5 v Sebastian Swierad (CA) with Powblock w/ Lunasol
So I'm sitting there feeling sorry for myself, when I'm playing against him. My last four games I was able to chat with my opponent and just have some fun as well, but this guy just annoys me. He's playing extremely fast, makes a mess of the game state, and is just generally annoying. Usually I'm able to ignore this, but not today. I start with Jirachi HL, he starts with Lunatone. I get a T1 Pidgeot, but he gets a T1 Luna/Solrock, so I can't use the Pidgeot anymore. I KO the Lunatone with Jirachi, and he doesn't get a new one for another turn. Because I'm not focused, definitely not playing at my best, and just demotivated, I forget the game state, and am thinking I still can't Quick Search. I'm not sure if I would've won if I HAD Quick Searched that turn, but it would've definitely given me a better shot. So he goes Energy Bomb, Admin, POW Blastoise, Spinning Tail. If I'd only been able to get a Lugia, I would've KOed the Ttar with about 7 energies, but of course I can't, so I lose. GG anyway =)
2-3
So now I'm really feeling sorry for myself and thinking I should just drop. But my resistance isn't bad, and I've never dropped from a tournament or finished with a losing record, so I figure I'd best still play on.
Round 6 v Esa Juntunen (FI) with Mewtric
I'm like, NOO not another Mewtric, but this time I get a solid start, and power up a Steelix and a Latias. It's not a very difficult game, and he gets some bad luck with draw =( He was really nice though, and I felt sorry for beating him, better luck next year!
3-3
David is 5-1 at this point, so he's in! Olaf and Sanne (10-)are both 4-2, so they have to win to get in for sure. Of course they both lose, but Sanne still makes it at 30th place I think, so that was cool XD
I'm 46th, so I don't think I'd make it, unless my opponents from previous rounds just win everything. There's still hope though, and last round I had fun, so I play on.
Round 7 v Chua Yee (MY) with LBS
She was annoying to play against as well. I always like playing against girls, cos they're more fun to play against and I've never lost a game of Pokemon to another girl as far as I can remember, except Stefanie XD. But she plays really fast as well, making mistakes in the progress. At one point she shuffles my deck and turns half of the cards upside down. ARGH.
The game was fairly easy. Goes the same as all my LBS games. I mudslide the Pidgeot, she Latias * me back. I POW up the Blastoise and KO it. She doesn't have anything anymore, so I just knock out some basics for the win.
4-3
Round 8 v Sebastian Lugo (AR) with LBS
I knew who he was from the Pokegym, and I figured he'd be playing LBS too. He played it with the Lati@s combo though, which I'd not tested against. I'm not sure if he played Celebi EX for the second POW, but I didn't see it. I play it the same as all my LBS games, only here he can POW my Blastoise and KO it with his Latios/as (never sure which one) from DS. So that's what happens. Luckily from the prizes I get off his Blastoise I pull Rare Candy + Transceiver. I'm hoping PLEASE don't Admin, and luckily he doesn't XD So he KOs my Blastoise, but with my prizes, I can get a new one the same turn. I also have 2 Pidgeots out, so he can't really mudslide mine. I have a Steelix out and play my Stump. His bench his Latias/Latios/Latias */Jirachi/Mew EX or something. He discards Pidgey and Latios I think? So I mudslide the Latias * in case he can get a Blastoise. He doesn't get anything anymore though, so I mudslide the Latias and then the Mew EX FTW. Good game though, I really enjoyed this one =)
So I'm 5-3, and come in 38th. I'm disappointed, especially when I see the T32 gets the new white Nintendo DS lite =( I'm still the best 15+ player from the Netherlands though XD I stick around Sunday to see David progress through T32 all the way to the finals, whoo. Sadly he loses, but he realises he did a GREAT job and did the Netherlands proud. Of course so did Arnoud, well done to him as well! Since he already had a Nintendo DS, I can buy it off him for 30 euros, which was cool. And in the end I realised I played both the finalists from the 15+ which was a cool thought. Too bad resistance doesn't carry on through the top cuts
I'm still angry with myself for not playing my best during round 4 and 5 though. Next year, I'm gonna make sure I don't play too much Pokemon in the weeks leading up to Worlds, to make sure this Pokemon ugh feeling doesn't return. If I qualify, that is :/
I wouldn't change anything about the list though, except maybe -1 Transceiver + 1 Mentor
Props:
- David, Olaf, Matthijs, and Jetze for testing with me and for being the best team members ever =)
- David for getting 2nd, good job buddy!
- Arnoud for getting 3rd and selling me his DS! GL in Hawaii next year
- Sanne for getting T16 with Flygon EX and winning her trip back with the scholarship she got!
- Gatsu for lending me his Latias *! I put it too good use, and hope it'll reach you safely!
- Erik for unknowingly lending me a Lugia EX, a Jirachi, and a Wartortle!
- Fabien for playtesting with me millions of times! You tought me what it's like to lose to lucksacks
- Martin for organising the shuttle after he made us book to San Diego XD
- Disneyland and the coolest hoodie I bought there
- All European players at Worlds who did Europe PROUD!
- Starbucks at the Hilton for breakfasts XD
- My new Nintendo DS and Animal Crossing XD
- LBS rotating out
- you for reading this report XD
Slops:
