At my BRs last week, 5/10 Seniors were playing Gengar. It was reaaaalllly annoying, and this card is harder to play around than it looks. Don't take it lightly.
9/10 'cuz it's just that great.

Where's DMTM when you need him...

Anyways, today's CotD is Gengar from SF, one of the most popular choices for decks these days. Statwise, 110 HP is...well, a bit below the average of 130 for a Stage 2, +30 Weakness to :dark: is fine since :dark: Pokemon are scarce, -20 Resistance to :colorless helps since the overhyped Flygon is around, and no Retreat Cost is always appreciated. Fainting Spell is a very nasty Poke-Power, giving you a 50/50 chance of instantly KOing any Pokemon that KOs Gengar, something that will no doubt frustrate opponents. Shadow Room is great for :psychic:, letting you throw 3 damage counters on any of your opponent's Pokemon (or 6 if they have a Poke-Power, meaning you almost OHKO cards like Claydol). Poltergeist is also a very nasty, cheap attacking, dealing 30x the number of Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums in your opponent's hand, all for :psychic::colorless. As these cards make up the bulk of any deck, Poltergeist is usually guaranteed to get some damage in.

Modified - 9/10 (One of the best cards in the format for a reason, despite its uninspiring HP)
Limited - 4/10 (If you can get it out, it's still quite useful, but not as much here. You'd be stuck using Shadow Room most of the time he's out)
Unlimited - 1/10 (No use here really)

Gengar is one of the best cards in the format. Fainting spell can change games. Poltergiest is risky but can do a lot of damage. Shadow room is what makes Gengar so great with the ability to put 6 damage counters on a pokemon power.
10/10

Good, annoying card

Poltergeist is good against non poke-power decks while Shadow room annoyings anything with a power

10/10 for playability

2/10 for fainting spell (grr):nonono:

9/10, it would be 10/10...but against decks that hardly use powers, and G their claydols/uxies, and run nidoqueen...it wouldnt do well.

One of the best cards in the format, yet one of the easiest ones to play around. Anyone who says this is broken is hallucinating (or not looking at ways to beat it). I can see this top cutting mainly because people generally don't know how to play against it, and if you don't know how to play against it, you lose every time.

7.5/10

7/10

Mainly because with unown g its easy to play around. Also giving the opponent an oppourtunity to prevent gengar's poltergiest is also a turn off.

Gengar was awesome, but not anymore cause people know now how to beat him.
It's still a good card that need skill to play.
He don't turn the game into a brainless challenge ... But you gonna loose against him if you play without your brain.

8/10

Gengar is a good card...

Gengar is a good card and maybe it will be even better with the x but its basically FLIP TO WIN

Missing from this discussion is Gastly and Haunter... Gastly (SF) locks down trainers and Haunter's ability to set up your opponent's hand for Gengar's second attack.

Please note that Gastly gets owned by Sableye.

Gengar: 8/10

If you win by fliping it's because your opponent don't have or don't know the answers to fainting spell.

Gengar is good because, as it was said, you're opponent have to play around him.

He can't play his deck the way he is used to.

Gengar doesn't have to be an attacker to be good, the simple fact that he is on play is disruptive.

So, definitively not a fliping way to win.
