2010-5-7 Magmortar UL 2/95

I thank it's more of a end game card. After you have had a poke or two in play and there's some energys in the discard pile then it would be great to pull out but you'll be lucky to get it when you need it. I give it a 5/10

Ahhhh, its good to review a UL card once again.

110 HP is very good for a stage 1. Water weakness kind of hurts, and the retreat cost is slightly heavy.

I actually kind of like this Magmortar. Although its attacks are rather expensive, DCE can come into great use here. The first attack isn't too shabby. It lets you discard the top 3 cards of your deck. You do 50 times the number of energies discarded. This attack can work really well with Delcatty PL that's for sure, allowing you to do quite some damage every turn because of Delcatty's Poke-power. The second attack isn't too bad either. Yes its expensive, but again, DCE works well here. It does 100 and then you discard 2 energies on him. Well, here, I think Typhlosion Prime can work with the second attack.

Overall 5/10 in modified

Yep, this isn't a bad card at all. It can work great with Delcatty PL or Typhlosion Prime. Delcatty PL will let you effectively use the first attack, while Typhlosion Prime will let you affectly use the second attack. Furthermore, Ninetales makes a great addition to Magmortar UL since after all, Magmortar is fire, and discarding fire can be good too, especially when you Delcatty PL or Typhlosion Prime to recover energies and then likely making it be useful to Magmortar. The problem with Magmortar is that it is a tad too slow compared to other decks right now, and water weakness isn't that good of a weakness either.

Hard Crush is heavily priced, but there are several ways to get Energy on top of your deck, with the obvious combo of Delcatty PL. The 4-for-100 attack is expensive, but it's not bad for a Stage 1 card that has 110 HP. It needs some support like Typhlosion, but isn't a terrible play. Of course, in TODAY'S environment, it's too slow, but it seems a lot of the Unleashed cards will really come unleashed after the rotation.

Ooh, finally some UL cards!

Today's CotD is Magmortar from UL, a fun guy. Statwise, 110 HP is great for a Stage 1, x2 Weakness to :water: is bad, no Resistance is common, and :colorless::colorless: to Retreat is meh. Hard Crush in ways reminds me of a mini-Rhyperior Lv X; though the cost of :fire::colorless::colorless: is bleh (though manageable with DCE), you deal 50x the number of Energy you discard out of the top 3 cards of your deck, making this a nice combo with Delcatty PL. On the other hand, Mantle Bazooka is meh at :fire::fire::colorless::colorless: for 100 and having to discard 2 :fire: off Magmortar, making Heatran Lv X a good partner in this regard. And of course, he always has the option to level up for more HP and a nice Poke-Power.

Personally, I like the idea of running him akin to mini-Rhyperior; you have the big advantage here over Rhyperior himself as you can dump :fire: Energy with Ninetales GS as your draw source, circulate it back to the top with Delcatty PL, and then blast for a min of 100, which is solid enough to OHKO or otherwise severely weaken most things, making this a rather cool idea next format, providing PL still is included...hmm, think I might even make an article out of this

Edit: Heck, did it anyways, http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?p=1710315#post1710315 for my unabashed self-promotion.

Modified - 5/10 (As it stands, it's a fun idea, but not super competitive due to the better options; however, next format it could be pretty fun)
Limited - 6/10 (Hate the Energy cost, but he has great HP for a Stage 1 and you have pretty decent odds of hitting it big with Hard Crush)
Unlimited - 1/10 (Meh)

In my opinion, this card isn't all that good. With Hard Crush, unless you're playing Delcatty then you're toast and with Mantle Bazooka, it may do 100 damage which is decent for using two colorless and two fire energy but you have to discard two fire energy. so while you're trying to get everything back up, your opponent could have some space to breathe if you don't have a Heatran Lv.X out as well.

Personally, this card gets a 2/10 for Modified.
Limited: about a 4/10
Unlimited: 1/10 because there are much better cards out there in previous sets that can do this kind of damage for less.

Not gonna be too hard on this, because he's not the worst card I've ever seen. Rhyperior and Blastoise PT are still Delcatty's best buddies IMO; however, this gives you the chance to set up a 100 attack with the Ninetales engine on a stage 1 without decking yourself TOO much.

Now, 4/10

After rotation, 5.5/10
