The artwork on this card is amazing. I bought four of these promos just so I could run it in my Serperior deck. HP is descent for 60 but any fire type hitting for 30 damage or more would easily take it out with it's X2 fire weakness. Water resistance is nice and the retreat cost is not bad for 1. I give it a 9/10.

I personally like this one over the other ones because like the other starter promos, it can inflict a special condition. Like with Tepig, it can cripple a Smeargle for at least one turn.

Plus I absolutely LOVE the artwork on this card!!!:thumb:

Today's CotD is Snivy from BW Promo...honestly I still hate the whole Snivy evo line, I guess Snivy and its Stage 1 are ok, but Serperior...ewww...anyways, statwise 60 HP is average for a Basic, x2 Weakness to :fire: sucks, -20 Resistance to :water: can be useful, and :colorless: to Retreat is cheap. Paralyzing Gaze has a 50/50 chance at Paralysis for :colorless:, not too exciting and kinda desperate for a stall. Tail Smack is a tad overpriced at :grass::colorless: for 20.

Modified - 1/10 (Honestly I'd go with either of the 2 Snivy in the set itself, 01 has more consistent attacks, and 02 has higher damage potential for two Energy. But still, don't dwell on Snivy, as the goal is to evolve it ASAP)
Limited - 0/10 (Promo herp derp)
Unlimited - 1/10 (Useless here unless you're trying to give away prizes)

10/10 BSIF (best snivy in format). Paralyzing gaze isnt that bad and the artwork is epic.

Quite a snooty Snivy.

Anyway, it's a basic. The only reason to run them quite often is to evolve them. Because of this, people just try and get the best basic they can, with good enough attacks that they will only use in niche situations.

This one I'll give a solid 8/10.

Like all it's siblings, this Snivy is a Basic Grass Pokémon with 60 HP (okay), Fire Weakness (okay now, troublesome next format), Water Resistance (hurray!), and a Retreat Cost of one (good). The first attack can Paralyze on a successful coin toss and costs :)colorless:), this is a little steep though Paralysis does tend to be a little more useful than Sleep or Confusion. If automatic Paralysis wasn't disproportionately effective, then I'd expect an automatic infliction for that price. The second attack is overpriced at :)grass::colorless:) as you are paying for at least 25 points of damage, even on a Basic Pokémon that Evolves twice, but only getting 20. Ultimately, they should have tacked the Paralysis onto the last attack and either given it no single Energy attack, or (preferably) some simple, hopefully useful different single Energy attack. Energy acceleration would have been good.

The thin is, this still looks like the best Snivy to use. Black & White 01/114 also has two overpriced attacks, but in a worse way: requiring :)grass:) for 10 and the same :)grass::colorless:) for 20. Why is this so much worse? Snivy isn't a beatstick. It isn't even a true opener. It is a stepping stone for its Evolutions, and thus helping it survive is paramount. Inflicting Paralysis even half the time, with the ease of removing Special Conditions, is going to be more useful than a mere 10 damage in the long run. Plus if we end up with any Colorless Special Energies worth using (cards like Cyclone Energy) today's Snivy will be able to use them and attack right away, but Black & White 01/114 couldn't. Black & White 02/114 has a single attack for :)grass::colorless:) that only averages 20, and actually delivers a 10/40 split. There is a slight advantage to being able to "rush" damage, but you're still getting less back than you paid for and can't attack with a single Energy at all. This makes it another version to pass on. BW01, another promo, isn't any better, giving you a 0/20/40 damage split for that same :)grass::colorless:) Energy cost. Roughly, you'll hit for no damage a quarter of the time, 20 half the time, and 40 that remaining quarter of the time. That gives it better average damage than Black & White 02/114, but worse minimum damage and a lower chance of hitting its maximum damage. This makes BW06 the best of the sub par.

Ratings

Unlimited: 5/10 - I think Serperior has some use in tank decks here, so for being the best of the Basic
Pokémon you must use to get that into play, it earns its score. The others would do substantially worse.

Modified (MD-On): 5.5/10 - I am probably being overly generous, but you can use this version and have the option of Paralyzing or using Call Energy, instead of only being able to use Call Energy.

Modified (HGSS-On): 6/10 - No more Call Energy, but it is a slower, less brutal format so in the end it comes out ahead ever so slightly.

Limited: N/A - If it was re-released in a set, it'd probably clock in as a solid 5/10 on its own, just for Resistance and the ability to Paralyze. You'd still be using it (alone) only as filler for a Grass Energy using deck, but at least it wouldn't be desperate filler.

Summary

The art is quite nice, and while the card isn't stellar it is still the best Snivy due to being able to desperately stall for time to Evolve; decent for a placeholder
Pokémon.
