[gal=52750]2012-02-14 ND Shaymin EX 005[/gal]

Shaymin EX in my opinion is one of the most interesting EXes. Sporting only 110 HP, Shaymin can be OHKOed by a variety of Pokemon, and the cost of 2 prizes is hefty. However, its second attack Revenge Blast makes it a powerful late game sweeper, capping at 180 damage at 5 prizes taken (KOing any EX pokemon without Eviolite.) Combining this with N seems like it may be a great last ditch effort to get back into a game. Starting with a Shaymin EX is a bad situation, but the energy acceleration provided by Synthesis is a small consolation. Fire weakness is meh, fighting resistance is nice. Pair him with Regigigas?

7/10 for now. I haven't tested enough to go higher or lower.

He's the last thing you want in your hand at the start of the game, and one of the best things to have near the end.

7/10

I cannot stress how much I love this card. If card was a woman, I would ask her out, but she'd reject me because she's out of my league.

herpderp forgot scoer 10/10

Shaymin EX. Probably my favorite artwork both in FA and regular. Decent Hp for a shaymin and being an EX, ok first attack, meh weakness, decent resistance, good retreat, and its second attack is awesome. being able to do up for 180 damage late game, i think yes.

Today's COTD is Shaymin EX, from Next Destinies. Shaymin EX is what i'd like to call a paradox, but i'll touch up on that later. He's got 110 HP (terrible for an EX), :fire: Weakness (Bad), :fighting: Resist (Avoids 2HKO from Donphan, so meh). And :colorless: Retreat (Expecting free from such a frail EX, but with the advent of skyarrow bridge, its negligible). It's first attack ,Synthesis, is energy acceleration in the form of an attack, which is good for starting out, the problem is, is a slightly better start worth working at a two prize deficit? I say no. Its second attack, Revenge Burst, is where he really shines. 30 plus 30 damage for each prize the opponent's taken. It's a shame that its cost is :grass::colorless: though, because grass energy is rarely used other than in Six Corners and MewtwoCelebi (if that catches on). However, since this pokemon's a basic, he's got access to not only rainbow energy, but prism energy, which makes his terrible typing much more negligible. Overall this pokemon has only one purpose, clutching in the late game, but since this pokemon takes two turns to set up, he is a prime catcher target who is usually KO'd in one hit thanks to his miniscule HP. 7/10

Shaymin is tough because he is OHKO'd by so many things that you can't even play him until you absolutely need to or else it becomes an easy two prizes for you opponent. Overall Shaymin seems like an underachiever. Doesn't mean he isn't great in the right situation. Being able to 1 shot anything in the game (you might need 2 pluspowers *dang eviolite*) is immense and shouldn't be overlooked.

Modified 6.5/10

Shaymin-EX is just plain awesome! He (She?) has great artwork, and a great second attack. His HP is awful for an EX, Fire weakness is irrelevant because all Fire attackers will OHKO it anyway, Fighting resistance is nice because it avoids a 2HKO from Donphan, but not ideal. 1 Retreat is pretty good, especially because of SAB, but you should not retreat it because chances are it will just get KOed on your opponent's turn after you attack with it anyway. His first attack is meh, but his second attack is where he shines. After your opponent has taken 5 Prize cards, you will do 180 damage. I think that it is deserving of a spot in 6 Corners, Mewtwo/Celebi and CaKE, because they can all fulfill his energy cost. Overall, I give this card an 8/10. His artwork is amazing, and you really have to own one to know just how great it is, a picture doesn't do it any justice. the artwork is 11/10. Funny thing is, I bought 4 packs last night and pulled one. :)

I just pulled this in a pack last night as well. :D

The thing that worries me most is the HP, but I wouldn't drop it unless my opponent was going to take a prize and would be down to 1, or if they only have 1 prize left.

It's risky, but if you can get it set up, it will be devastating for your opponent. Trainer lock of some sort + Shaymin would mean no catcher which means you could pull this guy out ready to go at any time. Definitely will be testing with it!!

7.5/10 (for now)

Shaymin EX was probably the least wanted EX at the prereleases next to Kyurem, and it was usually only above said dragon due to its AWESOME ARTWORK (see the full art version, too). As many have stated before, it's a downright terrible opener, as giving up two prizes at the beginning of the game will make the rest of the game a living hell in just trying to catch up, let alone claim the lead. Fire weakness doesn't help its cause, but a fighting resistance will against Donphan Prime (avoids a 2HKO), further aided by Evolite since, like all current EXs, it IS a basic pokemon. Of course, all these attribute, positive and negative, won't mean a thing unless it has the attacks necessary to be considered worthy enough to play.

Synthesis, it's first attack for (G), is really only useful for grass decks. Unfortunately, lets face it, said decks are very few, if even present. Virizion's attacks are too cheap to require the acceleration, and currently, we have Tangela to pride the exact kind of energy acceleration via attack as well.

The golden apple that will appeal to many players is its last attack, Revenge Blast starts with a baseline of a mere 30 damage for (G)(C), but that damage output gets further boosted by an additional 30 damage for each prize your opponent has taken. This generally means that its damage output will be capped at 180 damage (5 prizes taken at 150, plus the base 30 damage for 180 total). This makes Shaymin EX an excellent late game closer, but a dead-draw otherwise. However, there IS a way to up this number in a speciallized way. Some people have been tossing around the idea of adding prizes via Palkia & Dialga LEGEND's Time Control attack, while using Electrode Prime to power up said attack. Remember, Shaymin EX's Revenge Blast does an extra 30 damage for each prize card TAKEN! NOT how many prizes are left. Whether such an idea will work in a competitive format remains to be seen (I'm not set on it, myself, but it sounds fun regardless).

Modified: 3/5 Flaility is its problem here. 110 HP doesn't stand up to much of the format's heavy hitters, and that can very well be its downfall. Were it not an EX pokemon, however, things might be different, as it wouldn't suffer from the 2-prize rule. It does, however, still have late-game potential, and shouldn't be disregarded as a possibility.

Limited: 2/5 This is where the limit of 4 prizes in the game really sucks. This caps out its damage at 120 damage, which is short of KOing the regular Zekroms and Reshirams, let alone the many EXs out there. You might be better off keeping it in your binder and preserve its condition rather than run it.

Well the problem i have with this card is if you started the match with this card they would get an easy two prizez and to use its first attach you hafe to run grass energys. But besides all of that this card would be real good late game. 7/10

Adapted from my Pojo Card of the Day

Now we'll look at Shaymin EX, a card the Pojo CotD crew (via pooling our own picks for the top 10 promising cards of BW: Next Destinies) ranked as number 10!

Stats

Shaymin EX is a Pokémon EX. You should know the drill about it being worth two Prizes from both the original Pokémon ex that came out years ago and/or from Pokémon LEGEND cards. If not, as stated Shaymin EX (like all Pokémon EX) is worth two Prizes, and if there is an effect like Space Virus (the Poké-Power of Rayquaza & Deoxys LEGEND) that says to add one Prize to what should be taken, then Shaymin EX would be worth three Prizes! Granted, that isn’t going to happen against the majority of decks. Much more important to remember is that many stats and effects that would be “too powerful” for a “plain” Basic Pokémon will be balanced by the extra Prize.

Being a Basic Pokémon is of course great, especially in this format: they get more support than either Stage 1 or Stage 2 Pokémon and enjoy their normal benefits of requiring less deck space and being both faster and easier to put into play than other Stages of Pokémon. Being a Grass Type hasn’t been much cause for celebration, so unless Shaymin EX itself is the “missing piece” for Grass decks, it won’t be much help. If it is, then Grass actually does have some nice support that’s been itching to be used.

Shaymin EX
has 110 HP. This is the least out of the Pokémon EX we have received outside of Japan. For a non-Pokémon EX basic Pokémon this would be great, but for a Pokémon EX it is poor; both when compared to the other Pokémon EX (which are all 60 or 70 points higher) and to what it means in terms of play. 110 HP isn’t an easy OHKO, but it within reason, so unlike most other
Pokémon EX you almost certainly only get one shot.

Fire Weakness is to be expected, Shaymin EX will be vulnerable to OHKOs or severe damage even from most supporting Fire-Type Pokémon, while a main attacker like Reshiram finds a OHKO easy indeed. Shaymin EX does surprise by having Fighting Resistance, which can help give at least one reasonably likely, favorable match-up. Its single Energy Retreat Cost is also great: easy to pay and you can now use
Skywarrow Bridge to drop it to a free Retreat Cost, if that Stadium suits the rest of the deck.

Effects

Shaymin EX
, like all of the Pokémon EX we got this set, possesses two attacks. The first is Synthesis and for :)grass:) it allows you to search your deck for a :)grass:) Energy card and attach it to one of your Pokémon. Right now only basic Grass Energy provide :)grass:) while in the deck, but if that ever changes at least the hypothetical new card would be an option.

As far as usefulness, this is far better than nothing, but since it requires a :)grass:) Energy to use, that means you only come out ahead (in terms of Energy attachments) if Shaymin EX can get the attack off twice. If it were an Ability or grabbed and attached more than one :)grass:) Energy at a time it would have been pretty nice. Even if it required :)colorless:) instead, at least it would help Shaymin EX to be more easily splashed into other decks.

Synthesis is better than nothing, but realistically you're trading two Prizes so that something else doesn't get attacked and to thin your deck by one Grass Energy (since you could have just attached the Energy that paid for the attack to the target
Pokémon).

The second attack is Revenge Blast for :)grass::colorless:). This attack does 30 points of damage plus another 30 points for each Prize card your opponent has drawn. I’ll need to get a ruling about how cards that add extra Prizes (or common penalties) affect this, but for now I am assuming you don’t get to count more than five (in a normal match if your opponent took six, you would have already lost!). Since this is a Pokémon EX, even 60 for (GC) isn’t too good, but once your opponent has taken at least three Prizes (hitting for 120 points of damage), this can become a nice back-up attacker. Well, sort of: it doesn’t have much HP, so you’ll probably need to use a combo to set up for it. If your opponent is on there last Prize, you’d do 180 for :)grass::colorless:)!

Usage

This card makes me wish Shaymin Lv.X was still legal (though one would need to play it with a “regular” Shaymin to work), since the main reason I don’t see this becoming an interesting, come-from-behind deck is that Shaymin EX is a just too small. Even if you successfully drop it, power it up, and go for a KO a lot of Pokémon will be able to hit you hard right back for a OHKO!

Still with Eviolite you might be able to survive long enough to slowly pull ahead in Prizes and win. Probable support would be Twins, Black Belt, Electrode (HS: Triumphant 91/102) “Prime”, and N. It’d require hard work, but if you also have a Vileplume (HS: Undaunted 24/90) on the Bench as well, you might be able to force your opponent to take two or three Prizes (they’d probably take one willingly anyway if their deck is aggressive), maybe mess up their hand with N, and start having an Eviolite reinforced Shaymin EX dishing out 90+ points of damage starting second turn.

Less fanciful is using this as a surprise finisher/Mewtwo EX counter in decks that can power it up in a single turn, or allow it to survive the extra turn it’d need to be in play to power-up manually. If your opponent looks unlikely to score a revenge KO, then like I said after at least three Prizes it hits fairly hard. If your opponent has taken four Prizes, it will be able to OHKO most Pokémon, save for Pokémon EX and a handful of specific combos.

If your opponent does take five Prizes, then now for :)grass::colorless:) you can club something upside the head for 180 points of base damage. You can also be on your last Prize, so in the right decks it really does make for a solid finisher. 180 points of damage takes out all but a few specific combos. Some of those combos (basic Pokémon EX with Eviolite) might be common, but even then that isn’t all the time.

It should be decent bait, now that I think about it: the longer your opponent ignores Shaymin EX to pick off, say Basic Pokémon you want to Evolve, the stronger Revenge Blast will become. Your opponent almost has to take out Shaymin EX for his/her own good. Whether or not that is worth two Prizes, I don’t know. An Exp. Share would go even further at making it a threat: KO two Pokemon with a basic Energy card attached, as long as one of those Energy was a Grass Energy card, Shaymin EX is ready to rock.

So what about Unlimited? Obviously First Turn Win decks, or those that go for a specific kind of “lock” won’t use it. Everything else might consider it, but probably won’t use it either. Focus Band is a huge help for Shaymin EX, since hitting twice for big damage means it should pay for itself. Of course the mixed blessing is sometimes it won’t be hitting something all that big (so something less extreme would work) and sometimes those Prizes will be denied by your opponent’s own Focus Band or the “Baby Rule”.

In Limited play, skip it. Its lower HP will last longer and hitting for even 60 with Revenge Blast will be useful, but your max damage from Revenge Blast is 120. Again, impressive for Limited but not enough to OHKO an opponent’s Pokémon EX or Stage 2, rare as those would be to encounter. The real deal breaker is that the two Prizes your opponent takes would be half the total starting Prizes for Limited. This prevents it from being a good opener; unless your opponent can’t do any damage for about five turns, two Prizes is not worth the level of Energy acceleration you could get. Being Limited, you always have to worry about these kinds of starts. Even if you just get stuck with it as your only Pokemon in play early game, it's a problem.

Summary

Shaymin EX
was actually my Number 9 card, but my Number 10 didn’t make the group list. I won’t say what it was since that would spoil the list a little and some of you might actually hit up Pojo to see this series of reviews, but I think I should have put Shaymin EX at Number 10: it really looks like it will have an uphill battle. It needs acceleration or protection to “whack” something without being obvious, and being obvious will likely get it taken out before it can take out even one Pokémon, let alone two.

Love the artwork and it can be a great card when used right. and that usually means u wont be using its first atk. The best ways i see it played is with its clone shaymin the energy mover. as a game ender or EX eater. so drop shaymin ex retreat active play shaymin to get 2 energy (1grass or prism/rainbow) then if they are down to 1 or 2 prizes its a usually gaurenteed knock out on most pokemon and ex's for the game or to get rid of there brick wall. also good in mew decks for the suprise knockouts.
9/10 when played smartly
6/10 when played randomly

Geez almost forgot to do this...today's CotD is Shaymin EX from ND, a nifty little EX. Statwise 110 HP is great for a Basic (though considering this is an EX, it's kinda weak compared to its 170 and 180 HP counterparts), x2 Weakness to :fire: is meh, -20 Resistance to :fighting: can help, and :colorless: to Retreat is cheap. Synthesis is ok for :grass:, letting you search your deck for a :grass: to throw onto one of your Pokemon. Revenge Blast is the reason you'll want to run this little puppy though, :grass::colorless: for a base 30 isn't special, but it grows by 30 for each prize your opponent has taken, making it an effective late game sweeper; even midway through once your opponent has taken 3 prizes, simply toss on a PlusPower and you'll be able to OHKO most Stage 2s. That being said, the main liability is its HP; 110 HP is well in the KO range for most of the popular cards out there, and you lose 2 prizes if it's KOed. Still, Shaymin EX definitely gives :grass: decks a great way to sweep late in the game, although something like Mewtwo EX is better as a general tech for most decks.

Modified - 6/10 - It's not bad by any means, but the HP and 2 prize cost of losing it will likely deter people from playing it

Limited - 8/10 - I dunno, it's still a good attacker even with the 4 prize rule, but it's also much more valuable as trade bait

Unlimited - 2/10 - Eh, not that great, the low HP mainly doing it no favors despite the decent attack

Shaymin Ex plus Energy Switch = game winner

Well worth playing in any Toolbox deck like 6 corners deck
